Nanta backs Premier's Sandhurst initiative, explore revival of Sarawak Rangers
KUCHING (July 2): It is timely and necessary to explore the revival of the Sarawak Rangers as the state's own internal security corps, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He stressed, however, that such a move should not be misunderstood as an attempt to create a rival to the Malaysian Army.
'It is purely to complement the national security forces especially to ensure internal security of Sarawak is best looked after,' he said in a Facebook post today, responding to an announcement by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on during the Sarawak Security and Enforcement (UPKS) 8th anniversary dinner on Tuesday.
Abang Johari had said the Sarawak government plans to offer scholarships for Sarawakians interested in security careers to pursue studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom to cultivate a pool of talent and expertise that can serve in various agencies, including the police, military, and UPKS.
Describing the initiative as a commendable step, Nanta said it provides valuable opportunities for Sarawakian students, especially those aspiring to serve in security and defence roles.
Apart from that, it would also enrich and prepare them to be well qualified leaders of the future.

'Students at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst do not just learn military theories and strategies, but also on how to become well qualified leaders duly inculcated with cultures of high discipline, integrity, accountability and all the good virtues of leadership.
'Therefore it is timely and appropriate for such a move. Once again, the Premier has come up with a brilliant idea – an idea that definitely can enable Sarawak to become a truly developed and a progressive state where the business of running the government is well grounded based on universal virtues of 'what is right, is right and, what is wrong, is wrong'.
'Meaning, (the) governance will be proper, upholding the basic principles of fairness, merits, conscience, inclusive, irrespective of colour, creed, race or religion,' he said.

New access road linking Samarahan to KIA southern zone to open this September

KUCHING (Aug 2): The new access road linking Jalan Datuk Mohammad Musa in Samarahan to the southern zone of Kuching International Airport (KIA) is expected to be completed and open to traffic by next month (September), said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. During a site visit today, Nanta said the project was 96 per cent complete, with the remaining four per cent involving the installation of road furniture and street lighting. 'This road will serve as an alternative route once completed, helping to ease road congestion from Samarahan to Kuching,' he told reporters at the project site. He said the federally funded project was progressing smoothly and would be completed to high quality standards. Once completed, the new road will feature an elevated interchange, flyovers, improved drainage systems, utility infrastructure, and a new electricity substation. 'With a more structured and competitive road network, we are unlocking broader development potential and strengthening urban connectivity,' he said, highlighting the importance of strategic investments in road infrastructure to support inclusive and sustainable growth. 'The Works Ministry will continue to uphold this mandate responsibly to advance the state and ensure the well-being of its people, in line with the aspirations of Sarawak Maju Makmur 2030,' he added. The RM112.9 million project was designed to improve connectivity between Bukit Berangan in Kota Samarahan and Stampin Baru in Kuching, traversing a critical zone near the KIA Runway 25 precision approach. Previously, the project faced delays pending approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM). Final clearance was granted by CAAM's Air Navigation Services and Aerodrome Division (ANSA) on July 3 this year. On broader development, Nanta said Sarawak stood to gain significantly from initiatives under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which align with the state's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). He pointed to infrastructure, human capital, education, healthcare, green technology, renewable energy, and hydrogen as key focus areas. 'The 13MP mentioned that Sabah and Sarawak, the two Borneo states, will be developed as hubs for the energy industry,' he said. As for the Works Ministry, Nanta reaffirmed its core mission of implementing infrastructure projects such as road networks and public utilities. 'The Public Works Department (JKR) plays a major role not only in road construction but also in building schools, colleges, hospitals and clinics for other ministries such as the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health,' he said. He added that the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) oversees Malaysia's construction industry to ensure it meets international standards.

Infrastructure focus in 13MP crucial for rural Sarawak, says works minister
KUCHING, Aug 2 — The recently tabled 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) places comprehensive emphasis on national infrastructure development, including in Sarawak. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the Works Ministry (KKR) carries a major responsibility in implementing infrastructure development, as without good roads, it would be difficult to deliver other services such as education, healthcare and safety. 'Roads are like the lifeblood of the body. Without them, development is hard to reach rural areas. For example, although school projects fall under the Ministry of Education, their implementation and monitoring are the responsibility of the Public Works Department (JKR). 'This is the kind of inter-agency cooperation that must continue for the benefit of the people,' he told a press conference after the handover ceremony of the completed Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rantau Panjang here today. Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said the project in the Sungai Batang Rajang area — involving the construction of a main road from Nanga Serau to Nanga Seranau and included under the 13MP — is still in its preliminary stages, and no implementation date has been set yet. 'The road is expected to span around 70 kilometres and benefit thousands of residents, including villages, longhouses, schools and clinics,' he said. As for the Sarawak Trans Borneo Highway project, Nanta said it comprises three phases starting from Tudan to Kuala Baram in the Miri division near the Malaysia-Brunei border checkpoint, ending in the Limbang division without entering Brunei. 'This project is a continuation of the Pan Borneo Highway and will have a major impact, especially on the economic development and connectivity of areas like Limbang, which is a key town in northern Sarawak,' he said. Earlier in his speech, Nanta said JKR would continue monitoring all aspects of post-handover maintenance to ensure the project functions properly and meets the required specifications. 'The successful completion and timely handover of two more projects today proves that the MADANI Government's aspirations are not just rhetoric but are realised through quality projects that are completed on schedule and bring added value to the community,' he said.
