Coimbatore: The district administration is planning to conduct 334 camps under the 'Ungaludan Stalin' initiative in four phases across the district. These camps would be organized between July 15 and October 31.
District collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar on Saturday said 120 camps would be held in the first phase from July 15 to August 14.
During a media briefing, the collector said 1,694 volunteers were roped in for distributing pamphlets containing details of 43 services offered at the camps by 13 govt departments. "The pamphlets have space for the residents to specify their required services. Volunteers will inform the public about the camp dates and venues.
The camps will be held under the supervision of nodal officers."
The collector said priority would be given to the Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme and other govt initiatives. "The public could directly apply for various govt schemes, as representatives from all departments will be present at the camps. Ration card-related issues will also be addressed. No application from the public would be rejected."
Banners and posters with the camp dates and venues have, meanwhile, come up across the district.
The state govt has issued instructions to process all applications received at the camps within 45 days. The camps would begin at 9.30am. Immediate rectifications, such as certificate applications through e-Sevai services or name corrections in electricity board records, could be done on the spot.
As many as 96 camps would be conducted in the second phase from August 15 to September 14, another 96 in the third phase from September 15 to October 14 and the remaining 24 camps in the fourth and final phase from October 15 to 31. Of the total camps, 66 would be held in the city corporation limits, 80 in seven municipalities, 66 in 33 town panchayats, 102 in village panchayats and 22 in peri-urban areas.

Bihar Assembly Elections: Seemanchal, close to Bangladesh, sees significant voter deletion

Bihar's Seemanchal region which accommodates four districts - Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar - has witnessed a significant voter deletion in the draft electoral roll. Since the region is close to Bangladesh and shares boundaries with Nepal, these four districts, which have a high Muslim population, are known for infiltration. Araria saw a deletion of 1,58,072 voters, Kishanganj 1,45,668, Purnia 2,73,920 and Katihar 1,84,254 in the draft list. Now after the deletion, the number of voters in Araria stands at 19,24,414; Kishanganj 10,86,242; Purnia 19,94,511 and Katihar 20,44,809. The Seemanchal region, which has 24 assembly seats, is considered a tough battlefield for both main political players - ruling NDA and main Opposition INDIA bloc (previously known as Mahagathbandhan) because of polarisation of voters on communal lines during the elections. In 2020 assembly polls, AIMIM had made its presence felt in this region by bagging five seats. The presence of AIMIM candidates in different seats of this region was a major source of trouble for the Mahagtahbandhan then. Although a clear political picture of the Seemanchal region will emerge after the final publication of electors' list, both the NDA and INDIA bloc are set to swing into action to ensure proper verification of the draft list of electors in this region.

House of wars: on Parliament, Operation Sindoor discussion

The government and the Opposition crossed swords in Parliament during a discussion on Operation Sindoor this week. There was unanimity in praising India's armed forces, but there was little common ground beyond that. Operation Sindoor was India's military response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 lives. The elimination of three terrorists behind the attack, just before the parliamentary debate, helped the government's case. It told Parliament that these terrorists were Lashkar-e-Taiba members from Pakistan. The Narendra Modi government's strident approach seeks to change the behaviour of Pakistan and reassure its domestic audience. The success of this approach is debatable and the Opposition sought to put the government on the spot on both counts. A demonstrated willingness to use force against Pakistan in the event of a terrorism incident is a definitive turn in India's strategy, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) takes pride in that. But there is no evidence yet that it is working though there has been chest thumping around it by the ruling party. The discussion in Parliament barely addressed the implications of this approach, which is being touted as the new normal. The Opposition and the government agreed on the need to punish Pakistan, and also disagreed on who would do it better. The government claimed success in meeting its objectives of launching a military operation and denied that it had acted under pressure in ending the war. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi demanded a pointed response to repeated claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that he mediated the ceasefire but the Prime Minister evaded a direct response on it. The government contradicts itself when it says that the operation was a success, and that it is continuing. It is also exasperating to hear a party that is now in its eleventh year of uninterrupted power, blame people who passed away decades ago for any challenge that India faces now. There was little self-reflection regarding the lapses that led to the terrorism incident, and whether and how the government plans to address them. The government had sent joint teams including several MPs from the Opposition abroad to garner support for India in the aftermath of the operation, but that sign of statesmanship was a short-lived aberration, as it turns out. The world is changing rapidly and India's capacity to navigate those changes will be largely determined by its own character. Questioning the patriotism of political opponents is an easy route to take to evade tough questions, but the BJP must realise that such an approach has diminishing returns.

Pakistans opposition alliance slams hybrid model, demands change in system

Islamabad, Aug 1 (PTI) A coalition of Pakistan's six opposition parties Friday slammed the current 'hybrid" political system and called for a national dialogue aimed at creating a new democratic charter. Leaders of the Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Aayeen-e-Pakistan or TTAP (the movement for protection of the constitution of Pakistan) made the demand during a press conference here on the second day of their multi-party conference. TTAP, which formed last year and formalised its organisational structure last month, pledged support for all anti-government protests and said they discussed the prevailing political conditions during their conference. 'The parties participating in the TTAP and its All-Party Conference (APC) agreed that at this time there is an urgent need for a new democratic charter among all political parties and political forces," TTAP leader Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar said while presenting the alliance's resolution. 'As a result of the constant attacks of the hybrid system, the Constitution of Pakistan, the human rights given in it from Articles 8 to 11, and the parliamentary democratic system have become meaningless, and today the social contract between the people and the state has been shattered. 'Therefore, for the new charter, a complete consensus should be reached among all the political forces in the country after a national dialogue," it read. The 'hybrid model' that the group referred to was first mentioned by Defence Minister Khwaja Asif, a close aide of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. On June 20, Asif said Pakistan is being governed under a 'hybrid model" in which the military enjoys a major power share. The TTAP said that political consensus was needed on the supremacy of the Constitution and parliament, the rule of law, the judiciary's independence and the appointment of a free and independent Election Commission. The resolution also drew attention to the socio-economic condition of Pakistan and said, 'This has never been the case in the history of Pakistan. All the participating parties of the conference decided that a comprehensive and common strategy is needed to bring the country out of the current channels." The alliance condemned the 'unjust imprisonment" of former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi, demanding their early release and immediate appointment of their pending cases in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and the Supreme Court for immediate hearing. It also criticised the recent sentencing against scores of leaders and workers of Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and also took a shot at the judiciary for failing to uphold the law. Meanwhile, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, in his reaction to the group's demand, said it aimed to sabotage the economy. Tarar also alleged that whenever important diplomatic meetings are due, such as the upcoming visit of the Iranian president, such events take place. Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian will visit Pakistan on Saturday to hold talks with the country's top leadership on enhancing bilateral ties as well as the recent Iran-Israel conflict.
