Arsenal fans launch satirical 'Visit Tottenham' campaign to protest the club's controversial Rwanda deal
A group of Arsenal supporters have opted for a satirical approach in their campaign against the club's sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda.
Gunners For Peace unveiled a 'Visit Tottenham ' billboard outside the Emirates Stadium and said that the club's supporters would rather visit their arch rivals than continue to support the African regime.
Arsenal first signed a £10million-a-year shirt-sleeve agreement with Visit Rwanda, which is part of the Rwanda Development Board governmental body, in 2018, lasting three seasons, which was extended in 2021.
As well as appearing on the shirt sleeves of Arsenal's men's, women's and youth teams, the Visit Rwanda logo is also on LED boards on matchdays at the Emirates Stadium and interview backdrops.
The agreement has seen several past and present Arsenal players travel to Rwanda for sponsored content; David Luiz 's trip in 2019 was particularly memorable, as he stalked a gorilla in the jungle.
Last month, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government wrote a letter to Arsenal owners Stan and Josh Kroenke asking that they end the 'blood-stained sponsorship deal' after an invasion of DRC territory involving Rwanda-backed rebel group M23. The invasion of the city of Goma, home to about as many people as the populations of Leeds and Newcastle combined, has caused an estimated 3,000 deaths, according to United Nations officials.

As part of the protest, the group will be handing out armbands so supporters can cover up the Visit Rwanda branding on their shirts during Arsenal's clash against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.
Gunners for Peace have also produced a sardonic tourist video for the home of their bitter rivals Tottenham.
'Arsenal is a great club. We have standards,' reads the billboard outside the Emirates Stadium. 'Which is why Visit Rwanda needs to end. This is the same regime that's funding a brutal militia with thousands of victims in Eastern Congo. We think anything - literally anything - would be better than Visit Rwanda. Even Tottenham.'
James Turner of the Gunners For Peace supporter group told The Telegraph: 'It's hard to think of a worse sponsor than Visit Rwanda, and together with many other Arsenal fans we are calling on the club to drop them.'
Mail Sport understands the Gunners are exploring more lucrative sponsorship alternatives and are considering not renewing the partnership for a third term. The legacy of the deal, Arsenal's commercial revenue situation and the increasing trend of Premier League teams partnering with foreign nations for millions make for a complicated picture.

However, he left to undergo a medical in Istanbul on Thursday before completing the switch. Sane has spoken of the impact of fellow Germany international Kerem Demirbay in convincing him to move to Istanbul. He is the third new arrival this summer, with Ismail Jakobs and Przemyslaw Frankowski both completing permanent moves after spending time at the club on loan last term. 'It is a great honor for me to be here and to sign here. I would like to thank the club for giving me this opportunity," Sane said upon his unveiling. "I have come to the biggest club in Türkiye. I can't wait to give everything I have for this club and achieve success in this team. I can't wait to meet with the fans.' He continued: "I spoke to Kerem and he was incredibly happy that I was coming here. He told me that I would be coming to a great club, great people, great fans and a great country. He told me how happy he was and how happy I would be too. I can't wait to meet him as soon as possible." Sane will take the number 10 shirt previously worn by Belgium star Dries Mertens. 'Dries Mertens was a great player, a very important player. I want to achieve those successes with his number. I want to bring luck to Galatasaray with this number," the German said. "Frankly, I am aware of the previous images, I know all of them. I have been following them on social media. I was still very surprised. Arsenal are assessing their options after Porto indicated they lack the funds required to sign Fabio Vieira on a permanent basis. Much was expected of the Portuguese midfielder when he joined the Gunners in the summer of 2022. The 25-year-old arrived carrying an ankle injury and struggled to find a regular place in Mikel Arteta's team thereafter. After a disappointing 2023/24 campaign when he was reduced to a bit-part role, he returned to his former club on loan last summer. After several eye-catching performances, Porto would, according to The Sun, like to keep Vieira but are unable to match Arsenal's valuation. Arteta sanctioned the £35m purchase of Vieira three years ago and Arsenal are reluctant to make a significant loss. Viktor Gyokeres preference clear as Man Utd and Arsenal bid to resolve saga
Viktor Gyokeres is wanted by Manchester United and Arsenal, after scoring 102 goals in 97 games for Sporting Lisbon, with a move to the Premier League on the cards this summer Ruben Amorim knew it was only a matter of time before Viktor Gyokeres took the next step in his career and moved on to bigger and better things. When he was leaving Sporting Lisbon to take over at Manchester United back in November, Amorim was asked if he intended to take prolific goalscorer Gyokeres with him. 'If I start joking about this Gyokeres situation, I'll get in trouble,' said Amorim. 'This is my city, this is my country, so I'll respect it. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life will probably go somewhere else.' Having seen out last season with Sporting where he plundered a phenomenal haul of 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions, Gyokeres is now ready to move on. Gyokeres is good friends with fellow goal machine, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, and could soon be rivalling him – and Liverpool's Mo Salah – for the crown of the Premier League's top scorer. United is the logical destination for him, where he would be reunited with former boss Amorim, but Arsenal are also determined to land the 27-year-old Sweden star. Gyokeres has enjoyed a meteoric rise, from being let go by Brighton, to a spell at Coventry, then to Sporting and now on the brink of a mega-money move to the Premier League. It was at Coventry where Gyokeres first came up with his unique goal celebration, one which sees him cross both hands over his mouth, to form a mask. Debate has raged over the meaning of the celebration, with former Coventry team-mate Josh Eccles suggesting it is a nod to the character Hannibal Lecter in the film Silence of the Lambs. "He [Hannibal Lecter] eats people and Viktor destroys defences," said Eccles. Others believe the celebration was inspired by the masked villain Bane, from the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises. What is certain is that Gyokeres has been feasting on defences in Portugal and all over Europe since joining Sporting and has proved as deadly as Bane and Hannibal Lecter. A remarkable haul of 97 goals from 102 appearances in two seasons at Sporting has seen Gyokeres become a target for United and Arsenal, who will go head-to-head for him. Gyokeres served notice of his ability to terrorise Premier League sides in the Champions League last season, with a stunning hat-trick in a 4-1 win for Sporting over Pep Guardiola's City. As well as averaging more than one goal a game last season, Gyokeres has also scored nine in just six appearances for Sweden, underlining his ability to score at any level. Those who know Gyokeres well and have worked with him speak of a player with a relentless work ethic, strong mentality, laser focus and a fierce desire to win. Having just turned 27, Gyokeres is hitting the peak years of his career, which is why United and Arsenal – both crying out for a proven and prolific goalscorer – want to land him. Having agreed last summer to give Sporting one more season, Gyokeres insists he struck a gentleman's agreement with the club, allowing him to leave for a certain price. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has denied this and is adamant Gyokeres will not be allowed to leave for lower than his release clause of £85million. Reports from Lisbon suggest Gyokeres is willing to go on strike to get the move he wants, a move dismissed by Varandas and the Sporting hierarchy. What seems likely is that the future of Gyokeres will be a protracted saga over the summer, unless United or Arsenal are willing to meet Sporting's valuation. On the evidence of his phenomenal form of the last two seasons, Gyokeres would appear to be worth it.
