India bow out after loss against Indonesia
Xiamen (China): Struggling singles stars PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy disappointed yet again as India crashed out of the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals after conceding an unassailable 1-3 lead to Indonesia in a group D match, here Tuesday.
Having lost to Denmark 1-4 in their opening match on Sunday, India needed to win Tuesday's contest to stay alive in the race for the knockout stage.
The defeat has rendered their India's last group match against England -- who also made an exit from the tournament -- inconsequential. Indonesia, who had beaten England 5-0 on Sunday, and Denmark made it to the knock-out round after winning two matches on the trot.
Denmark prevailed over England 5-0 on Tuesday. With only two teams progressing from the group to the knock-out round, it was a must-win match for India but they were outclassed by their more fancied opponents.
The poor form of their star singles players -- Prannoy and Sindhu -- did not help the team's cause. Sindhu and Prannoy had lost their respective women's and singles matches against Denmark also. India made a winning start as the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto edged past Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjala 10-21 21-18 21-19 in a gruelling match that lasted one hour and 10 minutes.
In the women's singles, double Olympic medallist Sindhu, ranked 18th now, continued to struggle for form, losing 12-21 13-21 to world number 11 Putri Kusuma Wardani, a player she has beaten twice before, in 38 minutes.
With the scores levelled 1-1, Prannoy was up against Jonatan Christie, and he was on the front foot after taking the first game 21-19. But the world number six Indonesian took control of the match after that as he won the second and third games 21-14 21-12 against the world number 30 Indian. The women's doubles pair of Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra was no match to Lanny Tria Mayasari and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti as they lost 10-21 9-21. (PTI)
India will face England, who have also lost their two ties, in their last group game on Thursday.

India will be well prepared but we know where we want to get to as Test team: McCullum
London, Jun 12 (PTI) England head coach Brendon McCullum believes India have arrived well-prepared and full of belief for the upcoming five-match Test series but his team is also clear about where it wants to be in the eagerly-anticipated showdown beginning June 20 in Leeds. The series will kick off India's new World Test Championship cycle. "They're an outstanding cricketing nation, who will come here with high hopes, and we are looking forward to seeing them," McCullum told 'Sky Sports Cricket'. England on the other hand have just completed a whitewash of the West Indies in a six-match white-ball series. Their focus now shifts to the red-ball format as they gear up to take India and also prepare for the Ashes later this year. "It's important the guys refresh. We know where we want to get to as a Test team." England will be without tearaway pacer Mark Wood, who has been ruled out of at least the first three Tests due to injury. Fellow quick Jofra Archer will also miss the opening Test, while Gus Atkinson is still recovering from a hamstring strain. Despite the setbacks, McCullum remains confident in England's bowling options. "There are some quality bowlers that are unavailable, but we have a nice, varied bowling attack with Chris Woakes, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue for the high-pace element," the former New Zealand skipper said. "We have Shoaib Bashir, who is growing in Test cricket every day. We know we are going to be tested against India, and they will arrive prepared," he added. India begin a new era after Test retirements of veterans Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin. The team will be led by Shubman Gill and features a youthful lineup including Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal. England all-rounder Jacob Bathel has been recalled and McCullum was all praise for the 21-year-old. "Bethell has a good life in front of him. For a 21-year-old, he's got a real poise, and that allows him to go out there and be present and show off his flair and talent," McCullum said. "The world is his oyster. He's already becoming a leader in the dressing room which is what you want," he added. McCullum also mentioned Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett as the talents to look forward to. "Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett have reminded me of Duckett and Zak Crawley in the Test game. We know how good Duckett is, but the power that Smith possesses is amazing. "These guys are fearless, and if you add the craft, then you hope you end up with a rounded player."

Scheffler is trying to become the first man to win consecutive majors since Jordan Spieth in 2015 by taking his first US Open title. Live Events Scheffler highlighted the challenge posed by Oakmont's tall rough, remarking, 'What's so special about this place is that almost every time you miss the fairway, it's extremely tough to get the ball onto the green.' Scheffler, who claimed Olympic gold in Paris among his nine victories last year, enters the US Open in red-hot form, having won three of his last four starts. Scheffler begins at 1:25 p.m. when he starts off the first tee alongside fourth-ranked American compatriot Collin Morikawa and Norway's Viktor Hovland . Five-time major champion and world number two Rory McIlroy , who has shown signs of improvement after recent struggles with his driver, will tee off from the 10th at 7:40 a.m. alongside England's Justin Rose and Ireland's Shane Lowry. McIlroy, representing Northern Ireland, has a shot at making history by becoming just the seventh player to win both the Masters and the US Open in the same year.
