Turkiye storms back to beat USMNT 2-1
THE countdown to the 2026 World Cup continued for the US men's national team on Saturday in a 2-1 loss to Turkiye in a friendly in East Hartford, Conn.
Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds into the match before Arda Guler in the 24th minute and Kerem Akturkoglu in the 27th gave Turkiye the lead.
With the World Cup beginning in one year and four days, coach Mauricio Pochettino, on the job since September, assembled out of necessity a makeshift 26-man roster which includes six newcomers and 12 players with five or fewer appearance.
This is the group that will compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup beginning June 15, the last competitive tournament for the US until the World Cup.

The US was without mainstays Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Gio Reyna because of the upcoming Club World Cup; Christian Pulisic is resting while Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun and Sergino Dest are among those regulars who are injured.
Goalkeeper Matt Freese of New York City FC and Orlando City defender Alex Freeman started in the US debuts and Philadelphia Union teammates Nathan Harriel and Quinn Sullivan made their first appearances in the 65th minute.
Opportunities to impress Pochettino abound over the next month and McGlynn took advantage. Accepting a pass on the right flank by Malik Tillman, he cut toward the middle of the field and ripped a left-footed strike to the far netting for the early lead.
He has two goals in his two starts.
The lead evaporated on an unforced poor clearance by Johnny Cardoso in front of the goal that deflected off Guler and past the stunned Freese. It took only 2:20 for the Turks to move ahead when the US defense was scrambling, leaving Akturkoglu unmarked.
The US had a chance for the equalizer in the 61st minute but Tillman headed a cross from Tyler Adams directly at keeper Berke Ozer.
Turkiye did not have a shot attempt in the second half until the 83rd minute as the US dominated play

Pochettino plays down Spurs return rumours
USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino has played down rumours linking him with the vacant managerial position at his former club Tottenham Hotspur, following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou on Friday. Argentine Pochettino was in charge of Spurs for five years from 2014 and took the team to the Champions League final but never won a trophy with the North London club. 'If you have seen the rumors, I think there are 100 coaches in the list. I think, don't be worried about that,' he added. Pochettino has talked in the past about his remaining affection for Spurs and has never ruled out the possibility of returning to the club at some point. But he suggested the timing was not right for a second chance with his old team. 'If something happened, you for sure you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing, because I think today, it's not real. It's not realistic. And look at where I am, where we are,' he said in the stadium press room in Hartford, Connecticut. 'And the thing is, the answer is so clear, no? But we're talking about it because it's my club, like Newells or Espanyol,' he added. Postecoglou was fired just 16 days after the Australian ended Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. The former Celtic boss paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. The USA have now lost three games in a row, following losses to Panama and Canada in March's CONCACAF Nations League but Pochettino was upbeat about his team's encouraging display after question marks about the attitude of his team in recent games. Tuchel slams England's lack of 'seriousness' in win over Andorra
BARCELONA: Thomas Tuchel slammed England's attitude and accused them of a lack of "seriousness" during Saturday's lacklustre 1-0 win against minnows Andorra. Tuchel's side were booed at the final whistle in Barcelona after Harry Kane's 50th minute tap-in saved England from a humiliating draw with a team ranked 173rd in the world. Although England have won all three of their World Cup qualifiers since Tuchel took charge, they have struggled to fulfil the German's desire for a more attacking style of play. Their laboured efforts against Andorra infuriated Tuchel, who saw alarming signs that his players threw in the towel in the closing stages. "I didn't like the attitude how we ended the game," he said. "I liked the attitude how we started the game, the first 25 minutes, but I didn't like the last 25 minutes, the last half an hour. "I think we lacked the seriousness and the urgency that is needed in a World Cup qualifier. "We played with fire and I didn't like the attitude in the end. I didn't like the body language and I think it was not what the occasion needed." England sit top of Group K as they progress towards next year's World Cup, yet they will need to improve signficantly to make an impact in the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Tuchel was relieved to secure the victory after Andorra pushed for a late leveller, but he conceded his team had played with a lack of energy. "In the end we played with fire, honestly. I felt it almost like in a cup game where the favourite does not smell the danger," he said. "I didn't feel a team that is aware it's only 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier because we were not happy with ourselves. "I'm not blaming them. I even feel like they felt 'OK, we're not happy and this is stuck today, it will not happen today'. "Step by step the energy dropped. We needed exactly the opposite but we couldn't deliver and so we got away with a win." Tuchel had admitted before the game that it might be hard to crush Andorra by a huge margin because his players were tired after a draining domestic campaign. Nine of England's squad will jet off to the Club World Cup after Tuesday's friendly against Senegal in Nottingham. First, Tuchel will demand a more positive performance at the City Ground next week. "We will not stop to encourage them and make clear after we have a proper look at the match what we want from them," he said. England supporters made up the majority of the crowd at the RCDE Stadium and their displeasure was audible throughout a limp game that felt more like a pre-season friendly. Tuchel could not blame them for expressing their frustration, with jeers for the team mixed with abusive songs about British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. "The booing is OK." "They were underwhelmed and not happy with our performance, especially how we ended the first half, so I don't think we can blame them for that," he said. Kane Goal Secures England Win Over Andorra
HARRY Kane spared woeful England's blushes as his second half strike sealed a lacklustre 1-0 win against minnows Andorra in Saturday's World Cup qualifier in Barcelona. Thomas Tuchel's side were booed off by England fans in the RCDE Stadium after struggling to impress against a team ranked 173rd in the world. Kane's 72nd international goal ensured England avoided the ultimate embarrassment of failing to beat such lowly opposition. Tuchel is the first England manager to win his first three competitive games without conceding a goal. But given the paucity of opposition provided by Andorra, Latvia and Albania in the Group K qualifiers, that achievement rings a little hollow after this miserable display. 'I'm not happy with the performance. We completely lost the momentum and couldn't get it back. We ended up in a place that was not good enough in terms of urgency,' Tuchel said. 'We can just admit it that it's not what we expect from us. I was most worried in the last 20 minutes because I didn't like the attitude we ended the game with. 'I didn't like the lack of urgency. Given Tuchel's desire to see his player perform in the warm Catalan temperatures ahead of the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, it was instructive to see England struggle to find the energy and purpose required to make Andorra uncomfortable. They moved the ball too slowly, and were reduced them to hopeful efforts from distance, with Jude Bellingham's 25-yard shot comfortably saved by Alvarez. England looked bereft of ideas and the fans were beginning to grumble. Kane eased the mounting pressure when the Bayern Munich striker made the breakthrough five minutes after the interval. After Kane's initial shot was saved, Madueke alertly guided a low cross back into the six-yard box for the England captain to tap into the empty net. It was a modest way to reach a milestone for Kane, who has a remarkable 450 career goals for club and country in 697 games. England still couldn't find any momentum and were nearly punished in the closing stages when Guillaume Lopez's shot was blocked by Ezri Konsa.
