Defensive miscues let Revolution down in loss to Orlando City

Against the Red Bulls, the back line, missing Mamadou Fofana and, for most of the second half, Brayan Ceballos, broke down. Both Ceballos and Fofana returned against Orlando City, but appeared out of synch on the opening goal, Martín Ojeda taking an Eduard Atuesta feed and going in alone on Aljaz Ivacic in the 18th minute. The back line was made to look bad, but the breakdown began as the Revolution midfield failed to close Atuesta near the center circle. At that point, defenders are instructed to retreat; only Ceballos did so, and he ended up in a futile chase. A similar situation occurred in a 2-1 loss to Inter Miami, when Sergio Busquets found Lionel Messi for the opening score. Defenders are there to cover mistakes, but in both examples, blame should extend to the midfielders. It's usually easier to pressure the ball — Atuesta and/or Busquets — than try to play offside, or get in a footrace with Messi or Ojeda. Advertisement Atuesta ➕ Ojeda 😮‍💨 — Orlando City SC (@OrlandoCitySC) Advertisement These can be difficult challenges. Busquets and Messi present one of the most effective combinations in the sport's history, not to mention having Luis Suarez alongside them. As for Orlando City, Ojeda became the team's all-time leading scorer; Atuesta has won titles in three countries (Brazil, Colombia, the US Open Cup with Los Angeles FC); and there's Luis Muriel, among the most prominent strikers in the league. Going down a goal against Orlando City caused Porter to switch from a 3-4-1-2 alignment to a four-man back line in the second half. The change, combined with the addition of Tomás Chancalay, launched the Revolution attack, but the emphasis on going forward left them vulnerable. Chancalay equalized in the 55th minute, but Ojeda converted again in the 58th, exposing a Revolution defensive vulnerability on the right. IVAN TO MARTÍN FROM A BIRD'S-EYE-VIEW 🧘 — Orlando City SC (@OrlandoCitySC) 'That first goal killed us, and it has nothing to do with anything other than, in that moment — if there's no pressure on the ball, you've got to drop the line,' Porter said. 'You need someone to boss the line. You need someone in the line to be running the line up — step, drop, hold, slide. It's just natural things and we just don't have someone that's doing that. They're working together, but there's not someone leading that line, if that makes sense. We've got to get a leader there.' The Revolution revamped the roster in the offseason, with signings to fit Porter's specifications. But there is no measure for intangibles, such as communication and leadership skills. Developing chemistry can take time, especially for center backs, who must make decisions in unison. Orlando City (10-6-8, 38 points) has gone through a similar transformation, putting together a journeyman back line that has improved, partly due to stability. Advertisement Teamwork is equally important up front, but resorting to individual play works, as well. And, thanks to Chancalay, that seemed to be happening in the second half. Chancalay threatened from distance, spread the field with well-aimed passes, brought a sense of urgency. Orlando City adjusted, coming out on Chancalay, leaving openings. And the Revolution appeared on the verge of breaking through, but Peyton Miller's point-blank drive was saved by Pedro Gallese in the 74th minute. They don't call him El Pulpo for nuttin' 😳 — Orlando City SC (@OrlandoCitySC) Yet, whether it's defensive failings or a hot opposing goalkeeper, there are almost no difficulties that having prolific strikers can't overcome. Porter said earlier this season the team needed a 10-plus-goal striker and, so far, Leo Campana is the leader, but with only four. Shortcomings could be solved during the MLS transfer window, open from Thursday through Aug. 21. But time is running out, and integrating newcomers can be difficult late in the season. 'They are giving everything they have, they are fighting, they are running, and they're united,' Porter said. 'That's clear. I'm confident in my ability and the team's ability to make the playoffs. We're playing well, but we're losing moments that cost us the game. Some of those moments are transitions. Some of those moments are like today, a simple ball in behind our lines. Some of those moments are finishing the play. I mean, if Peyton scores that goal we at least get a draw. So, those are the margins, that's what needs to change.'
