LORMAN, Miss. (AP) — Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt and Marcus Tankersley each scored 15 points and Alcorn State beat Prairie View A&M 71-55 on Saturday.
Gaines-Wyatt added five rebounds and six assists for the Braves (9-19, 9-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Mike Pajeaud finished with 13 points.
The Panthers (5-24, 4-12) were led by Braelon Bush, who posted 19 points and eight rebounds. Prairie View A&M got 12 points from Zaakir Sawyer. Marcel Bryant finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jordan Tillmon also scored 11 points.

After the Aggies' 16th preseason practice on Tuesday, the former five-star prospect spoke to the media for the first time this year, finally providing insight on why he chose Texas A&M after transferring from Alabama, stating that his familiarity with defensive coordinator Jay Bateman sealed the deal. Bateman, who had a big part in landing Ricks from the portal, revealed on Tuesday that Ricks played over 650-plus snaps during his redshirt freshman season in 2024, which is exceptionally challenging for any young player. Still, his improvement this month has been nothing short of impressive, calling him "one of the shining stars" during the preseason. At wide receiver, Elko, OC Collin Klein, and WR Holmon Wiggins deserve the credit for landing KC Concepcion and Mario Craver from the transfer portal. At the same time, sophomore Ashton Bethel-Roman has been another "shining star" due to his elite speed and fluid route running. Ricks, who has covered all three players in practice, is excited to see just how good Texas A&M's passing game can be, knowing the talent level has dramatically increased. "KC (Concepcion), he's really good, how he runs routes, Mario Craver, real twitchy guy, Ashton Bethel-Roman, a lot of speed, he can stretch the field." Elko and Bateman's trust in Ricks shouldn't be surprising to anyone knowing his talent level, while his 6'1", 188-pound frame, length, and impressive speed make him one of the top candidates to improve significantly, and is still on track to earn one of the two starting outside corner spots. Arizona State football's Jordyn Tyson lone Sun Devil on AP preseason All-America teams
The preseason accolades keep coming in for Arizona State junior wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson, who had 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns before being injured late last season, is among three wide receivers on the Associated Press Preseason All-America first team. Tyson joins Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Alabama's Ryan Williams as the receivers on the list. Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano was the only other Big 12 player to make the first team on offense or defense. No players from the conference made the second team. The teams are determined by voting from college football media members. Big 12 football bowl projections: Arizona State returns to College Football Playoff Arizona State's Sam Leavitt, who has also earned some preseason accolades, was left off the list at quarterback with the AP choosing Clemson's Cade Klubnik as its first-team QB and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier as its second-team selection at the position. Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman was demoted as the program's play caller this offseason, but remains in the same position and will continue to be a significant part in gameplanning while already solidifying himself as an elite recruiter. This was the best move, as coach Mike Elko will resume his previous role with Texas A&M during his time as the Aggies' D-coordinator from 2018-2021. On Tuesday, after Texas A&M's 16th preseason practice, Bateman spoke to the media with plenty of praise for several new defensive additions, including Colorado transfer DE Dayon Hayes and cornerback Dezz Ricks, who are both expected to be essential pieces in the pass rush and secondary. Bateman and Elko see eye to eye sheme-wise, as he provided some insight on whether we'll begin to see Elko's "exotic" third-down packages this season. "Yeah, so last year, you know, we got a a point during the season where, you know, the coverage piece of it was a little big scarier for us than it has been where I think now. We feel really good about that, and also had some edge guys and D-lineman who were pretty good one-one-one pass rushers." During his final season as A&M's defensive play caller in 2021, Elko's third-down packages were a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks, and the players Bateman is referencing excelled in coverage and one-on-one pass rush opportunities, which wasn't always the case last season. With the new additions up front, combined with a cornerback rotation that now features Julian Humphrey and Jordan Shaw, the 2025 pass rush could thrive if the coverage holds up, providing Elko more freedom to send more pass rushers to disrupt offensive rhythm. "I think (Mike) Elko's exotic stuff is in bloom," Bateman stated. "We have a pretty good plan on third down." Texas A&M will open the 2025 season against UTSA on Saturday, August 30.
