NFL analyst calls Rams defensive lineman a 'DNA changer' for 2025
One of those moves was to add veteran defensive lineman Poona Ford to the young defensive line — a unit that needed help stopping the run this past season. Ford, who's known as a quality run stopper, should make a sizable impact on this group. Which is why The Athletic's Dave Helman and Derrik Klassen both agreed Ford is a "DNA changer" for the Rams defense in 2025.
'Poona Ford, specifically as a Los Angeles Ram, is exactly what we're talking about when we say we want to change the DNA of a unit," Helman said on The Athletic Football Show podcast. "This is a great first step toward making the Rams' run defense respectable."
Ford signed a three-year, $27.6 million deal with the Rams following season-long stints with the Los Angeles Chargers and Buffalo Bills. He began his career with the Seattle Seahawks from 2018 to 2022. Through his seven NFL seasons, Ford built up a reputation as a penetrating run-stopper. He has 37 career tackles for a loss, including eight in 2024 with a 78.8 Pro Football Focus run defense grade.
The idea here is that not only will Ford upgrade the Rams' 22nd-ranked run defense in yards per game and 24th in yards per attempt, but that he'll also raise the tide of all the young L.A. defensive linemen like Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske and rookie Ty Hamilton. A better run-stopping team will alleviate pressure on the pass rushers, too.

Falcons Make Decision on Michael Penix, Kirk Cousins Playing Preaseason
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Preseason football is a time when coaching staffs can evaluate their current rosters, deciding which players will be cut and which will be added to the final 53-man roster. It's also a chance to see where current veterans are at, and if they are working together to master the playbook. More news: Aaron Donald Has Officially Returned to Rams Training Camp The Atlanta Falcons are one such team, but they have a unique situation. Currently, the team has Michael Penix as the starter, Kirk Cousins as the backup, and Easton Stick and Emory Jones beyond that. It is widely believed that Cousins will remain the backup, and the Falcons have no interest in moving him. So, it would also be believed that Cousins might not get a big chance to prove to other teams to make wild offers for his services. That second statement is speculation, but Cousins will not get his chance to shine in Week 1 of preseason. Expect a lot of these around the league: #Falcons coach Raheem Morris tells reporters that QB Michael Penix Jr. and Kirk Cousins won't play this Friday for the #Falcons in their first preseason game. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 4, 2025 Per multiple reports, Falcons head coach Raheem Morris is not going to play either Penix or Cousins when Friday's preseason game rolls around. It is not at all shocking that the starter will not be out during the first week of preseason, but it is a bit strange that Cousins is not going to get a chance to play at all. He is the backup after all. Kirk Cousins looks to pass as quarterback Michael Penix Jr. looks on during OTAs. Penix could be replacing Cousins before you know it. Cox/Getty Images More news: Travis Kelce and His Mom Steal the Show at Chiefs Camp It could be that the Falcons are protecting Cousins in a way to prevent him from suffering a costly injury, or it is simply not time for him to line up behind center. There are three preseason games in which to offer Cousins some quality starting time. Former Los Angeles Chargers and veteran quarterback Stick will get the start instead. The entire Cousins situation has been odd. Once he landed in Atlanta, he was given a monster four-year, $180 million contract, and there was reports that the Falcons tampered with the situation. To add to that drama, Cousins was benched in favor of Penix ahead of Week 16 of the regular season, ending his time as the leader of the Falcons. Cousins spoke to the Falcons' ownership about being traded, but they are hard-pressed to do that considering his sizable contract and dead cap money if they moved him. Either way, fans will have to wait until Week 2 or 3 to see Cousins sling the ball. Even when he does take the field, the chances of him being moved after a stellar performance still remain slim. Jags GM reveals Rams tried to add this former Cowboys CB 'several times over the years'
'Sean McVay always said he was especially tough to game-plan against.' The Los Angeles Rams have used several different avenues to add cornerback talent throughout Sean McVay's tenure, from trading for Jalen Ramsey to drafting Cobie Durant. They've used free agency to address the secondary, too, signing Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon, two current starters for Los Angeles. One player the Rams have tried to add in the past is former Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis. During a visit to Jacksonville Jaguars training camp, general manager James Gladstone revealed to ESPN that the Rams attempted to bring in Lewis 'several times over the years' because of how much respect McVay has for the cornerback. Gladstone and the Jaguars signed Lewis this offseason and have already felt his impact in the secondary. The cornerback group looks like a potential strength, with or without Hunter. The addition of former Cowboy Jourdan Lewis in free agency was a big one for former Rams exec Gladstone, who said L.A. tried to get him several times over the years because Sean McVay always said he was especially tough to game-plan against. The Jags believe Lewis is already having an impact as a leader in that room. Gladstone used to work in the Rams' front office, so he knows players they've liked throughout the years, as well as their draft tendencies. He even predicted the Rams would take Terrance Ferguson with their top pick in the draft. It's unclear when the Rams tried to add Lewis, but he signed new deals with the Cowboys in 2021 and 2024 before joining the Jaguars this offseason. It's possible Los Angeles eyed Lewis the first two times he was a free agent, and potentially even this offseason before Jacksonville landed him. He inked a three-year, $30 million deal with the Jaguars this offseason after a strong season in 2024, continuing his play as one of the best slot defenders in the NFL.

Former Rams star Todd Gurley eligible for Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026
Gurley is only 31 but he's already eligible for the Hall of Fame Todd Gurley retired from the NFL much earlier than most fans expected, calling it a career after just six seasons as a pro. He spent five of those years in St. Louis and Los Angeles with the Rams before signing with the Atlanta Falcons for one season in 2020. Gurley officially announced in October of 2022 that he was done playing football but because his last game came in 2020, he's already eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He's one of several strong first-time candidates in 2026, including Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Jason Witten, Philip Rivers and Frank Gore. In his career, Gurley rushed for 6,082 yards, 67 touchdowns and caught 243 passes for 2,254 yards and another 12 touchdowns. He led the NFL in scrimmage yards once in 2017 (2,093 yards), which was his first year with Sean McVay. He also led the NFL in rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns in 2017 and 2018, scoring a total of 40 times in those two years combined. In 2017, he won AP Offensive Player of the Year, was a first-team All-Pro, finished second in MVP voting and sixth in Comeback Player of the Year. It was a true breakout season for the star running back who had already won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2015 despite playing only 13 games. Gurley's candidacy for the Hall of Fame is tough because his peak was phenomenal in 2017 and 2018, but he likely didn't have enough sustained success to be a real contender for Canton. That being said, he was a generational talent whose career was unfortunately cut short by a balky knee that dated back to his college days.
