Kentucky Derby 2025 Horses, race time, odds, post positions, payout, field and everything else you need to know
Journalism enters the event as the favorite, but that hasn't been a major indicator of success at the event in recent years. Can Journalism live up to the hype, or will another horse in the field etch a name for itself at the event?
With that in mind, here's everything you need to know about the 2025 Kentucky Derby ahead of the race.
The 2025 Kentucky Derby will be held Saturday, May 3. The race has traditionally taken place the first Saturday in May, though it didn't start that way. From 1875-1931, the race usually occurred in the middle of the month. That changed in 1932, when the event started being held the first Saturday in May.
That schedule has remained consistent since 1932, though did change as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The Derby was scheduled for the first Saturday in May originally, but had to be moved to Sept. 5 due to the pandemic.
Coverage of the 2025 Kentucky Derby will begin much earlier in the day, but the post time for the race is 6:57 p.m. ET. That time is not exact and will move based on how quickly and easily the horses get set up in their posts.
The Kentucky Derby is always held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The race has been held at the track since its inception. Churchill Downs is named after John and Henry Churchill, who leased the land for the racetrack.
The track is currently operated by Churchill Downs Incorporated.
Below is the field, post positions and odds for each horse in the 2025 Kentucky Derby. Citizen Bull holds post position No. 1. Baeza is in post No. 19.
Citizen Bull (20-1)
Neoequos (30-1)
Final Gambit (30-1)
American Promise (30-1)
Admire Daytona (30-1)
Luxor Cafe (15-1)
Journalism (3-1)
Burnham Square (12-1)
Flying Mohawk (30-1)
East Avenue (20-1)
Publisher (20-1)
Tiztastic (20-1)
Render Judgment (30-1)
Coal Battle (30-1)
Sandman (6-1)
Sovereignty (5-1)
Chunk of Gold (30-1)
Owen Almighty (30-1)
Baeza (12-1)
*Grande — who was originally slated to start in the ninth post — was scratched Friday due to a foot bruise. His replacement has yet to be named.
Journalism enters the event as the favorite at 3-1. The morning-line favorite hasn't won the event since 2018, however. The last morning-line favorite to win the Kentucky Derby was Justify.
Post position matters quite a bit at the Kentucky Derby. Horses in the earlier post positions have traditionally performed better than horses in the later post positions at the event. The fifth post position has resulted in the most wins at the Kentucky Derby, with 10 horses winning from that slot during the race's history.
No horse has ever won the race from the No. 17 post, though horses have won the Kentucky Derby from the 18th, 19th and 20th posts in the past.
Louisville is expected to be hit with storms throughout the week. On the actual day of the Kentucky Derby, it's supposed to be partly cloudy with a high of 67 degrees in Louisville. While rain isn't likely on the day of the race, the track will be hit with a lot of precipitation early in the week, which could affect the outcome of the 2025 Kentucky Derby.
The winner of the 2025 Kentucky Derby will receive roughly $3.1 million. That's what 2024 winner Mystik Dan won last year.
In total, the event has a purse of $5 million. The horse that finishes in second place will win roughly $1 million.
The total purse at the event used to be about $3 million, but that changed in 2024, when it shot up to $5 million total.
Controversial trainer Bob Baffert is allowed to return for the 2025 Kentucky Derby after serving a three-year ban from the race. Baffert was banned from the event after 2021 winner Medina Spirit tested positive for a banned steroid.
Medina Spirit was stripped of its win following a second positive test, leading to Baffert's suspension. Mandaloun was named the winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby.
Baffert — who has a lengthy history of his horses failing drug tests — originally had two horses in the 2025 Kentucky Derby: Citizen Bull and Rodriguez. However, Rodriguez was announced as a scratch on Thursday afternoon due to a foot bruise. Rodriguez will be replaced by Baeza, trained by John Shirreffs, now set to race out of the 20th pole position. Baeza is the half-brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage.
Late country music star Toby Keith owned racehorses for two decades prior to his 2024 death from stomach cancer. He owned a "thoroughbred breeding and racing operation" called Dream Walkin Farms, according to WLKY News.
Render Judgment — which sits in the No. 15 post — is owned by Keith's operation. In the leadup to the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Keith's estate tweeted about Render Judgment's inclusion in the field, saying it "was Toby's dream" to have one of his horses run in the Kentucky Derby.
While the race won't begin until 6:57 p.m. ET, coverage of the Kentucky Derby will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC. Peacock will also stream early coverage, which starts at noon ET.
This year will mark the 25th time the Kentucky Derby has aired on NBC.

Joy for Lampard and Steel City woe - Aaron McLean's EFL takeaways
Saturday's EFL action provided the usual thrills and spills we've come to expect over the years. Former Peterborough, Hull and Bradford striker and Final Score pundit Aaron McLean gave his five takeaways from what we learned across the Championship, League One and League Two. 'Fantastic result for Frank Lampard' Coventry City came out on top of a topsy-turvy eight-goal thriller against Midlands rivals Derby County at lunchtime. The Sky Blues twice led but then went 3-2 behind before eventually running out 5-3 winners. McLean: "It's a fantastic result for Frank Lampard. At one point it might have seemed like they threw it away when they allowed Derby back into it, but it was great character from Frank Lampard's side. "I think it's definitely a statement. Since Frank's come through the door, he has restored belief in that club massively. "The progression they have made under him is massive and they will be looking to kick on now this season." Coventry beat Derby in eight-goal thriller Lampard following Derby County win Steel City becomes the city of woe There's not been much to cheer about in the Steel City so far this season. Both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are pointless after their opening two Championship matches having changed their respective managers in the summer. The Blades, who lost last season's Championship play-off final to Sunderland, went down 1-0 at Swansea City, while beleaguered Wednesday lost 3-0 at home to Stoke City. McLean: "Really disappointing from Sheffield United, I think they're still suffering a hangover from last season. "Obviously with the change of manager as well, Ruben Selles coming in, at the minute things don't seem to be gelling. "Sheffield seems a tough place to be at the moment. When you look at Sheffield Wednesday, as well - the transfer embargo, the protests, and the results on the pitch, there's so many things going wrong. "It's sad to see because it's such a big club, when they are winning games, Hillsborough is one of the best places in the country to play. "The fans don't have their football club at the moment and until it is sold there are going to be more dark days like today." Three goals and a funeral on day of protest at Wednesday Stoke cruise to win at stricken Sheff Wed Ronald gives Swansea edge over Sheffield United Surprise package Stevenage early pace-setters in League One Stevenage's 2-0 home victory against Northampton Town sent them to the summit of League One. Their third league win out of three means Alex Revell's side are now the only team to have a 100% record in the third tier. McLean: "Alex Revell has really got the boys playing. What he has done in a short space of time, along with his 10 new signings so far, he's made them believe in the project. "Last season, they were probably a bit inconsistent and that's probably why they fell away but, if they continue to play in the way that they are playing, they will definitely be challenging for a play-off spot." Stevenage 2-0 Northampton Town Alex Revell: 'This is just the start of it' Ten-man Blackpool see off League One favourites Huddersfield Ten-man Blackpool claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Huddersfield Town at Bloomfield Road, with all of the goals coming in the first 31 minutes. Forward Niall Ennis went from hero to zero as he received a straight red card in the first half after scoring a quick-fire double for the Tangerines but Steve Bruce's side held on to claim their first points of the season. McLean: "Great result for Steve Bruce and Blackpool. They did a job today against one of the favourites for the title in Huddersfield. "They've made a lot of big signings, Alfie May notably being the biggest - he guarantees Town goals, but Steve Bruce has done what he has done year in, year out. "He brings together a group of players who are going to work hard. For them to win 3-2, after being down to 10 men, just shows the character that they've got within their dressing room." Blackpool 3-2 Huddersfield Town Bruce: 'We needed something like today' MK Dons 'are going to take some stopping' MK Dons put in a five-star performance to thrash Cheltenham Town in League Two. Paul Warne's side were widely tipped for promotion in the summer and, following an opening-day draw, have now registered back-to-back victories in the fourth tier as they climb into the early-stage promotion places. McLean: "They've spent a lot of money, they've brought in a lot of experienced players, Nathanial Mendez-Laing and Callum Paterson - they have benefited from the woes of Sheffield Wednesday. "They've come in and hit the ground running - Paterson, two goals and two assists so far to kick the season off. "Now that they're on a roll, I think they are going to take some stopping." MK Dons beat Cheltenham in 5-0 thrashing Warne: 'Hopefully there will be many more here' Aaron McLean was talking to BBC Sport England's Matthew Cresswell Get football news sent straight to your phone Follow your club with BBC Sport

Yankees GM Brian Cashman Defends Aaron Boone as Team Struggles Continue
The New York Yankees have struggled in the second half of the season after the All-Star break. They've now fallen into third place in the American League East and enter Saturday 6 1/2 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays, who are in first. As cries for manager Aaron Boone to be fired grow louder, general manager Brian Cashman is defending Boone and doesn't appear ready to make a change. WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA - MARCH 12: New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman talks with manager Aaron Boone prior to a Grapefruit League spring training game against the Washington Nationals at FITTEAM Ballpark of... WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA - MARCH 12: New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman talks with manager Aaron Boone prior to a Grapefruit League spring training game against the Washington Nationals at FITTEAM Ballpark of The Palm Beaches on March 12, 2020 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Many professional and college sports are canceling or postponing their games due to the ongoing threat of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. More"One thing that people maybe really forget is that we play in a market that holds you — maybe Boston and Philly, too — that holds you more accountable automatically," Cashman told Chris Kirschner and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. "The market already provides instant accountability. In many cases, today's world is so much different than maybe generations before. I think leaders, managers, coaches are more inclined to try to support and help players that are going through a lot as they try to navigate their struggles. Struggles are part of the game. It's just louder in a bigger market." That is correct. New York is obviously a bigger market compared to smaller ones even within the same division such as Toronto and Tampa Bay. However, market size has nothing to do with performances, and the Yankees have been one of baseball's worst teams since the All-Star break. Catching up within the division is going to be difficult for the Bronx Bombers to do. However, Cashman believes Boone is the guy to lead them through the chase. "He knows how tough this sport is," Cashman told The Athletic about Boone. "He's invested in these guys heavily, as we all are. Trying to explain away a difficult play or a bad performance for some time while the storm is upon us is not an easy task to navigate or deal with and remain cool, calm and collected. He's obviously done an amazing job of working through that. ... We're the defending American League champs trying to re-defend that. Obviously, right now, we're not in control of the division. Our first goal is try to win the American League East and automatically punch the ticket that way. If not, we'll be fighting to punch a ticket a different way. We have a lot of time on the clock, but not enough time at the same time. I don't want to misrepresent (that) there's not urgency, because there is." There needs to be a little more urgency for the final six weeks of the regular season. New York holds just a 1 1/2-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians for the final wildcard spot. Cashman might have a different stance if/when the Yankees are eliminated from the playoffs. More MLB: Fernando Tatis Jr. on Padres-Dodgers Rivalry: 'It's What We Play For'

Astros' Josh Hader Gets Bleak Injury Recovery Timeline As October Looms
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Houston Astros closer Josh Hader had never been seriously injured before as a big-leaguer. Now, he's out indefinitely at the worst possible time. Hader last pitched last Friday, in a two-inning, 36-pitch outing against the New York Yankees. His throwing shoulder was bugging him, he was unavailable for the rest of the weekend, and he wound up being placed on the injured list on Tuesday. It's Hader's first-ever trip to the IL, save for a bout of COVID in 2021, and it leaves the Astros without their six-time All-Star. It's especially notable that the injury came after a multi-inning outing, which Hader famously refused to do before he got his second contract. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 08: Josh Hader #71 of the Houston Astros pitches during the tenth inning against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on August 08, 2025 in the Bronx borough of New York City. (Photo by)Now, Hader's prognosis is a bit more clear, and it appears he'll be frantically working against the clock to have any hope of returning during the regular season. On Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported that Hader has what the Astros termed a "left shoulder capsule strain." He will not throw for approximately three weeks, and then next steps will be determined. If we assume it's three weeks on the dot, that means Hader won't throw a baseball until the first week of September. Optimistically, that would put his likely return sometime in mid-to-late September even with an accelerated rehab. Hader has a 2.05 ERA in 52 2/3 outings this season, striking out 76 and racking up 28 saves. He is in the second season of a five-year, $95 million contract. The Astros are fortunate to have a second closer-worthy reliever in Bryan Abreu, but there's no doubt Hader is a huge loss. It's not just Abreu who will have to step up, of course; anyone in a medium-leverage role will likely have to take on high-leverage innings now. In the meantime, the best thing Hader can do for now is rest, and he and the Astros have to hope the shoulder heals itself quickly.
