French rider Ferrand-Prevot solos to victory in women's Tour de France
Last year's winner Katarzyna Niewiadoma of Poland finished third overall at 4min 09sec.
The 33-year-old Ferrand-Prevot said she had achieved "the goal of (her) life as an athlete" after sealing victory in the mountains on the border with Switzerland.
She adds to her 15 world titles in several cycling disciplines including mountain biking, cyclo-cross and road racing.
She becomes the first French rider to win the modern women's Tour de France in its fourth edition.
Jeannie Longo won the title 36 years ago in the former race, the Tour de France Feminin.
This season, after seven years devoted primarily to mountain biking, she won the women's edition of Paris-Roubaix before focusing on preparing for the Tour.
"It was so difficult (this stage). I wanted to win here in the yellow jersey. It's a dream," she said.
Bernard Hinault was the last Frenchman to win the 21-day men's Tour de France in 1985 when he claimed his fifth title.

Kane scores as Bayern thump Spurs in pre-season friendly
Kane, who is boyhood club Tottenham's all-time top goalscorer with 280 strikes in 435 matches, put Bayern in the lead after 12 minutes with a composed penalty box finish. The England captain then had a chance to double Bayern's lead two minutes later when Joao Palhinha, who joined Spurs from Bayern on a season-long loan on Sunday, gave away a penalty. Kane however slipped, blasting his shot well over the bar. It was the first time Kane failed to convert a spot kick since his miss in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final defeat to France. Kingsley Coman added the home side's second with a superb curling shot from the edge of the box with 61 minutes gone. Bayern teenagers Lennart Karl and Jonah Kusi-Asare both scored in the dying stages to complete the one-sided victory. Kane joined Bayern in a 100 million euro (£87 million) transfer from Spurs in the summer of 2023. The match was the Europa League winners' last chance to fine tune before next Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup clash with European champions Paris Saint-Germain. Spurs have had a mixed bag under new coach Thomas Frank this pre-season, beating London rivals Arsenal along with Reading, while being held to draws with Newcastle, Luton Town and Wycombe.

Wales have the talent to rise again, says rugby head coach Tandy
Tandy becomes the first Welshman to coach the national side since 2007 when Wales have slipped to 12th in the world rankings and had lost 17 successive matches before beating Japan last month in the final game of Matt Sherratt's interim reign. Wales were 2019 World Cup semi-finalists under Warren Gatland and Wayne Pivac's side won the 2021 Six Nations Championship. But Pivac's reign quickly unravelled and Gatland's return produced no upturn in fortunes, with his departure coming during the 2025 Six Nations in February. The Welsh Rugby Union has stated it wants to see Wales in the top five in the world by 2029. "The privilege and the honour to be head coach of your national country is massive," said Tandy, who has ended a six-year stay as Scotland defence coach to return home to Wales. "I believe in the talent we have in Wales, to get us to where we want to go. "There's not going to be a magic wand or a quick fix and then it all changes, but I do believe in the pathway. "Ultimately you want to have ambition. We want to have ambition to meet those targets, but ultimately there's a process to get to that as well." Tandy won the Pro12 competition in six years at Ospreys but left the Welsh region in 2018. He worked for NSW Waratahs in Australia before moving to Scotland, while Gatland made him defence coach on the British and Irish Lions' 2021 tour of South Africa. Tandy takes up his role on September 1 and will prepare for autumn home games against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa.

Partey signs for Villarreal while on bail for rape charges
The 32-year-old Ghana international, who denies the allegations, was granted conditional bail on August 5 after appearing in a London court on five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey was charged on July 4, four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June. In announcing his arrival, Villarreal stressed that they respect the "fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence". The club's statement continued: "The player strongly proclaims his innocence and denies all the accusations made against him. "The club... awaits the judiciary's decision, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts alleged against him." Partey is due to appear at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. He joined Arsenal for £45 million ($60 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season and scored four goals. Overall Partey played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times. He has also made 51 appearances for Ghana. © 2025 AFP
