Madurai: Save Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) Coalition has demanded that Tamil Nadu govt provide at least Rs100 crore a year for pensions and salaries for the university. It is not right for employees or pensioners to be made scapegoats during the university's financial crisis, it said.
Several hundred people are affected by the financial crisis at MKU without receiving salaries and pensions. The coalition pointed out that monthly pensions and salaries for Dec 2024, Jan 2025, and Feb 2025 were paid only in March, while May salary is yet to be paid.
"The govt is refusing to provide funds for salaries citing audit objections. The responsibility to correct audit issues lies with the finance officer and deputy director.
Govt secretaries have been on the syndicate to streamline the university. It is the duty of the govt to point out and correct the shortcomings in the financial management of the university," said A Srinivasan, president, Save MKU Coalition. He added that the university suffered from various administrative irregularities for four years and the quality of education was declining.
He said the resources and infrastructure of the university should not be rented out to private agencies to mobilise funds.

Bawankule takes dig at Uddhav Thackeray in Nagpur

States » West Nagpur, Aug 11(UNI) Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Monday launched a scathing attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, accusing him of protecting individuals involved in an alleged Rs100 crore extortion racket during the Maha Vikas Aghadi regime. Bawankule remarked "Uddhavji, the people know who the real leader of extortionists' is" and went on to accuse him of shielding individuals involved in an alleged Rs 100 crore extortion racket during his time as chief minister. On Thackeray's tenure as CM, Bawankule remarked "as CM, you strangled democracy and morality. Questions were raised about the decisions you made, the administration you ran and your governance." "Today, instead of attacking the honest, development-oriented, and transparent leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, it's imperative to look at yourself in the mirror", Bawankule said. "In the Assembly elections, Maharashtra also witnessed who was the 'Chief Minister' and who was the 'Thief Minister', The senior" BJP leader said sarcastically. Bawankule advised Thackeray to self-reflect before criticizing Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, asserting that public trust lies with Fadnavis while Thackeray has lost public confidence. Bawankule termed Fadnavis' leadership as 'honest, development-oriented, and transparent', painting them in direct contrast with Thackeray, whom he accused of undermining democratic and moral values. Cong office is a temple, build one to show your contribution

Mysuru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC President D.K. Shivakumar has urged Congress MLAs and block presidents to construct party offices in every Assembly constituency, calling it the true measure of their contribution to the party. Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Indira Gandhi Congress Bhavan in Mysuru, Shivakumar said, 'For Congress workers, the party office is a temple, a shrine to protect democracy. Whether you contribute Rs100 or Rs1,000, your support should be remembered by your family as your service to the party.' The event coincided with Raksha Bandhan and Quit India Day. Shivakumar praised leaders like Tanveer Sait and Tiwari for their commitment, noting that properties have been transferred to the party in several constituencies. He recalled that it has been 100 years since Mahatma Gandhi became Congress president, and Mallikarjun Kharge now holds the post, adding that the party aims to build offices in 100 locations across Karnataka. He stressed that party offices should not be set up in legislators' homes but as permanent structures for the organisation. He lauded the dedication of several MLAs who donated land or funds, citing examples from Maddur, Ron, and other constituencies. Shivakumar also mentioned his own contribution of land in Ramanagara, where construction is underway with financial backing from ministers and local MLAs.
