Women's World Cup to expand to 48 teams at 2031 tournament

Yahoo09-05-2025
The Women's World Cup will expand to 48 teams from the 2031 tournament onwards after the proposal was approved by Fifa Council on Friday, the Guardian understands.
The UK is set to host the event in 2035 and that tournament will now involve 12 groups of four teams and more than 100 matches, with the format mirroring the newly expanded men's World Cup. It is understood Fifa took this decision after consulting the continental confederations and believe expansion of its most important tournament befits the rapid growth of the women's game.

The World Cup increased in size from 24 to 32 teams for the 2023 event in Australia and New Zealand. It will again have 32 teams for the 2027 edition in Brazil. The eight venues for 2027's event – including the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro – were confirmed earlier this week.
The United States is set to stage the 2031 tournament after there were no competing bids to stage either that or the 2035 event. The US and UK are yet to be formally ratified as the hosts but that is expected to be a formality.
The expansion of the Women's World Cup could mean an increased number of host cities and stadiums will be required in the UK's 2035 tournament plans. Alongside Wembley, Hampden Park and Cardiff's Principality Stadium, it is thought as-yet unbuilt venues such as Manchester United's new stadium and Birmingham City's proposed new 62,000-seater home could both be in contention to host matches if built in time.
Fifa has also approved a three-pillar strategy for Afghan women's football, including the establishment of a women's refugee team, as reported by the Guardian in March.
The three pillars of the plan mean the global governing body will provide 'project-specific support for women and girls in Afghanistan', while taking into account the limitations there, embark on 'advocacy and diplomatic engagement with relevant actors' in the Taliban-led country and enhance playing opportunities and support for players outside of the country.
The third pillar includes the establishment of a team of evacuated players of Afghan nationality who will be able to participate in friendlies and tournaments organised by Fifa and will 'provide a supportive environment that prioritises player safety and wellbeing'.

It is understood the decision has come too late for a team to qualify for the 2027 World Cup, with Afghanistan not entered into the June qualifying campaign for the 2026 Asian Football Confederation Women's Asian Cup, which will determine World Cup qualification.
The refugee team will be organised for a one-year pilot phase, after which its long-term viability, effectiveness and the potential of the format being used for other refugee groups will be assessed.

How to watch South Africa vs. Australia: Live stream the 2025 Rugby Championship anywhere

The 2025 Rugby Championship kicks off with champions South Africa taking on wooden spoon holders Australia at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, and we have all the info that you need to watch South Africa vs. Australia, whatever hemisphere you're in. As well as the reigning Rugby Championship victors, the Springboks also hold the World Cup and the top spot in the international rugby rankings. With an 88% winning record, Rassie Erasmus is building a dynasty and is now seeking the country's first back-to-back titles in this tournament. It's been almost three years since they've lost to the Wallabies, so his side will start as heavy favorites as the likes of Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, and Pieter-Steph du Toit all start in a very experienced XV. They may have ultimately lost the series, but the Lions tour of Australia suggested the health of the hosts may be in a better state than previously feared. After losing the second game to a controversial last minute try, the Wallabies powered their way to a win in the third and final fixture to provide some sense of optimism heading into the Rugby Championship. Heading across the Indian Ocean for a double header to begin won't make things easy, but experienced coach Joe Schmidt will have taken heart from their performances and will be buoyed by the return of veteran fly-half James O'Connor. Can the Wallabies out-jump the Springboks? You'll find international broadcasters on which to watch South Africa vs. Australia below, together with details on the kick-off time, streaming platforms, and how to use a VPN to access your live stream if you're overseas this weekend. How to watch South Africa vs. Australia in the UK You can watch South Africa vs. Australia on Sky Sports in the UK; it's the official Rugby Championship 2025 broadcaster. Sky TV plans that include Sky Sports start from £35/month, and you can customize your plan to make sure you get all the channels you need. Or, if you already have Sky, you can add its nine sports channels for an extra £22/month. You can learn more about it in our guide to the best Sky TV deals and plans guide. If you don't want to sign up to a lengthy Sky TV package, then you can opt for a more flexible Now Sports Membership, which starts from as little as £15/day or costs £35 on a rolling monthly basis. How to watch South Africa vs. Australia in the US If you're a big US-based rugby union fan, you're probably already aware of FloRugby. The specialist streamer features loads of live matches in North America and has exclusive rights to show Rugby Championship games — including South Africa vs. Australia — stateside this season. A rolling monthly subscription costs $30, or go for a whole year for $150 to watch every game of the 2025 Rugby Championship along with matches from the Super Rugby, Top 14, and URC. How to watch South Africa vs. Australia in Australia While free-to-air Channel 9 and its 9Now streaming platform have the rights to show the Wallabies' home games and those against New Zealand in this year's Rugby Championship, you can't watch South Africa vs. Australia there. Instead, you'll need a subscription to Stan Sport. The streaming service covers an ever-expanding array of live sports and costs from $32/month (combining a base Stan subscription of $12 with the Sport add-on for $20). How to watch South Africa vs. Australia from anywhere Your domestic coverage of the Rugby Championship won't be available to stream if you're overseas during the South Africa vs. Australia game. It will be blocked due to geographical restrictions, stopping you from watching on FloRugby, Sky Go, or any other platform. Thankfully, there's a way around this so that you still get access to the service you pay for… a VPN. VPNs (or Virtual Private Networks) spoof the IP address on your laptop, smartphone or streaming device so that they think they're in a different country entirely. The very best available is NordVPN, which has a great track record for unblocking streaming platforms and other blocked apps. It's also easy to use, has servers in more than 100 countries, and gives you an extra layer of encrypted cybersecurity when turned on, too. Give it a try risk free for 30 days or, if you're still not convinced, check out our full NordVPN review for more information. How to use a VPN Sign up for a VPN if you don't already have one. Install it on the device you're using to watch. Turn it on and set it to the location of your streaming service. Navigate to your streaming service and create an account if necessary. Enjoy the game. What is the South Africa vs. Australia head-to-head record? These two rugby union superpowers have played 95 times since their first fixture back in 1933. The Springboks are currently edging the head-to-head, having won 52 of their encounters compared to the Wallabies' 40. They've drawn three times. South Africa have won their last four clashes, with Australia's drought going back to August 2022. Even more foreboding for the Aussies is that they haven't beaten the Springboks on their turf for more than a decade — a win in Durban back in 2011 when this tournament was still the Tri Nations. What is the venue for South Africa vs. Australia? This Rugby Championship 2025 opener between South Africa vs. Australia will take place at the 62,000-capacity Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, where international rugby union has been played for more than a century. The 1995 Rugby World Cup final — after which Nelson Mandela memorably presented the Webb Ellis Cup to the successful Springboks — was played at Ellis Park, as were seven games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Business Insider does not endorse or condone the illegal use of VPNs.

Want away star now positioned to STAY at Liverpool

One want away Liverpool star is now in line to stay with the club. That's a turn of events few saw coming. Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal with Bournemouth for Ben Doak, according to the Guardian. They claim the Scot is set to move for around £25m. It's a decent amount for a young player with no real Premier League experience. The Reds don't really have the space in their squad to keep Doak around, either, as they don't appear to fancy him as backup to Mo Salah. And so cashing in now makes a lot of sense. It's a case of selling while Doak's price is decently high, given next season looks so unclear for him as things stand. If he doesn't land a decent loan move, that price will only drop. Liverpool are making sure that won't happen by getting a deal done now. But with it, Liverpool also appear to position one want away star to stay in their squad. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Federico Chiesa's future With Doak leaving, Federico Chiesa is essentially the only real backup in the squad to Salah. Especially as Harvey Elliott is also linked with a move away - but then, Arne Slot doesn't appear to like the playmaker on the wing all that much. Chiesa was initially signed as backup on the wing and it's a role he did hold last season. Even if he barely got on the pitch. His lack of minutes sparked all sorts of speculation that he'd leave - and reports certainly suggest Chiesa is after a return to Italy. After all, he doesn't particularly want another season of limited minutes ahead of a World Cup year.

Former Australian cricketer, captain and coach Bob Simpson dies at age 89

SYDNEY (AP) — Bob Simpson, a former player, captain and coach and one of the most influential figures in Australian cricket, has died at the age of 89. Cricket Australia on Saturday confirmed the death of Simpson, who represented Australia in 62 tests and two one-day internationals between 1957 and 1978. Simpson scored 4,869 test runs, including 10 centuries and 27 half-centuries, and took 71 wickets, while captaining Australia in 39 tests. Simpson was just 16 when he made his first-class debut for New South Wales state against Victoria. He also coached Australia from 1986 to 1996 and under his firm and steady guidance, Australia won the 1987 World Cup, four Ashes campaigns and in 1995 the Frank Worrell Trophy, ending a 17-year drought against the West Indies. Cricket Australia said the Australian team will pay tribute to Simpson with a moment's silence before Saturday night's one-day international against South Africa at Cairns in northern Australia and will also wear black armbands. Simpson made his test debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1957, and his first century came in an Ashes test at Old Trafford in 1964, when Simpson went on to score 311. He is one of only seven Australians to make a triple-century. He was also one of the greatest slip-fielders, taking 110 catches. Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was among the first to pay tribute to Simpson. 'Bob Simpson's extraordinary service to Australian cricket spanned generations. As a player, captain and then era-defining coach, he set the highest standards for himself and the champions he led,' Albanese wrote on X. 'He will be long remembered by the game he loved. May he rest in peace.' Simpson was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013. 'As a brilliant opening batter, incredible slips fielder and handy spin bowler, Bob was a mainstay of a very strong Australian team in the 1960s, and he became a leader across the game as Australian and New South Wales captain and as a coach." Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird said in a statement. 'Bob's decision to come out of retirement to successfully lead the Australian team during the advent of World Series cricket in 1977 was a wonderful service to the game, and his coaching set the foundation for a golden era for Australian cricket." ___ AP cricket: The Associated Press
