Gujarat Giants announce new coaching staff ahead of PKL 2025 auction
The move aims to build a fearless, robust, and title-contending squad for the brand new campaign in season XII.
Jaivir Sharma has been appointed as the new head coach, while Varinder Singh Sandhu will take over as Assistant Coach of Gujarat Giants.
With over three decades of experience, Jaivir is among the most respected figures in Indian kabaddi. He is a championship-winning coach with an impressive track record and brings a wealth of experience along with tactical acumen to the leadership role.
Jaivir, who has been serving with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) since 1992, has been instrumental in shaping the careers of numerous national and international kabbadi players. Under his guidance, Indian team has clinched Gold medal at prestigious international events, including the Asian Games, Kabaddi World Cup and multiple marquee kabaddi championships.
'I'm excited to be joining Gujarat Giants. I look forward to developing a fearless and humble philosophy within the team, with the aim of making us one of the strongest contenders in the PKL. Since joining the league in 2017, Gujarat Giants has built a strong reputation for grooming star players such as Rohit Gulia, Sachin Tanwar, Sunil Kumar, Parvesh Bhainswal and Pawan Sehrawat, all of whom have become household names and key figures in the league.
Gujarat Giants, the two-time PKL finalists, also take pride in backing young coaching talent and offering them the platform to rise and shine. A prime example is Manpreet Singh, who came through the ranks to become one of the most successful coaches in PKL's history.
Continuing that tradition is Varinder, a talented coach with elite-level kabaddi experience and 17 years of exemplary service in the Indian armed forces. He brings a blend of leadership, discipline, and modern tactical insights to his new role with the Gujarat Giants. Varinder will work closely under the mentorship of Jaivir as he transitions into the league's setup.
Varinder has served as the head coach of the Indian women's kabaddi team, leading them to win multiple historic Gold medals, including at the 19th Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, and the 6th Asian Kabaddi Championship 2025 in Iran. He was the coach of the Punjab state team and the Indian Air Force (IAF) at various tournaments, including the National Games 2023 and 2025, where he played a key role in inculcating a winning mindset among young players.
Speaking about his new role and his upcoming PKL debut as an assistant coach, Varinder said, 'I'm really excited to join the Gujarat Giants' family. It's an incredible opportunity to be part of one of the biggest Kabaddi leagues in the world. I'm also eager to experience the player auction for the first time and look forward to building a solid squad for the new season. I'm committed to contributing to Gujarat Giants' success and helping the team achieve its collective goals with our Head Coach (Jaivir).'

Athletics: Gulveer Singh betters own National Record in 3000m in Hungary
Indian middle and long-distance runner Gulveer Singh on Tuesday bettered his own National Record in men's 3000m during the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in Budapest. Gulveer clocked 7:34.49 to finish in fifth place. Mathew Kipsang of Kenya won the race with a timing of 7:33.23. Gulveer's previous best in this event was 7.38.26, which came at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational 2025. The 27-year-old is also the National Record holder in 5000m and 10,000m events. He had recently claimed golds in the these two distances at the Asian Athletics Championships. Gulveer has qualified for the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo in 5000m. He did so by bettering the entry standard of 13:01.00. India's lone female driver in Asia Pacific Rally Championship, Nikeeta Takale aspires to shine in WRC and Dakar
The only Indian female driver in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC), Nikeeta Takale, who won three podiums in the Sumatera Utara Rally, aspires to participate in the World Rally Championships and the gruelling Dakar Rally after achieving success. Takale, with her co-driver Sudhindra BG won three titles in the third round of APRC which concluded on Sunday, bagging APRC RC4 class, APRC Ladies Class and Sumatera Rally RC4 category. Her exploits have made her eligible to participate in the APRC Finals in Japan scheduled for November 6-8. 'This is my second APRC because two years back, I got qualified in India. But due to some reasons, I could not go to the finals. But this time I made it over here. And Japan is 100 per cent on track,' she told PTI. 'Being in the sport, everyone's goal. This is the dream come true rally for me, the APRC, which I had dreams of in 2022. So, step by step, I really want to do many more internationals. 'I want to gain more experience. I want to train with big trainers. And then obviously the WRC is my dream to drive,' Takale added. Takale, who began her motorsports journey in 2016, was inspired by her uncle, veteran rally driver Sanjay Takale, though she admits they rarely spoke about the sport. 'My first ever autocross I did when I wasn't even 18 years old. I took a three year gap but In 2021, there was autocross back in Pune, when I came there,' she said. 'In that autocross, I got the best amateur, the fastest driver amongst the guys. So that was the real energy that I got that yes, I have to be there in this sport. And that encouraged me a lot.' Takale, representing JK Racing, won her 100th podium in career after winning this rally and wants to increase the number further. 'I started my career in 2021 and it has been up and down,' said the 24-year-old, who is being supported by Vamcy Merla Motorsports. 'I got an opportunity for the Rally Star Hunt event, in which I was selected from Bangalore. So I was very happy. I kept winning, I kept putting my efforts. I had made a century in my podiums after winning this rally.' Takale also emphasised that motorsport is about more than just speed. 'The sport is not only about driving fast. It needs too many techniques. You need to learn the track. As with the track, your driving changes. And yes, I did train. I've trained with many different trainers from India. It has changed me a lot. I have become a more technical and professional driver now,' she said. Takale credits her father and husband as the two key figures behind her continued success in the sport. 'I'm a married woman who's there in motorsports now. If he (husband) wasn't, in these four years, I do not think I would have got into motorsports. It's been one and a half year, I can say now. The moment I entered motorsports, I gave in,' she said. 'No, he always tells me, whenever you take the name motorsports, keep me away. You please go enjoy, because he's a person who loves cars a lot. It's like you're destroying the car. So we are two different personalities in one house. 'For me, to start my motorsports career, the only man behind me was my dad, till the date and will always be him. The second man in my life was my husband.
