I test AI every day — the best AI voice generator I've ever used just dropped

Tom's Guide2 days ago

You've probably heard an AI-generated voice by now. They are usually pretty noticeable, lacking in emotion or styling and still fairly robotic in nature. But with its latest update, Hume is changing that.
Evi 3, the latest version of the company's leading AI-voice generator, has just landed. While it has an array of pre-made voices to try out, the thing that really sets this model above the rest is its customization options.
Hume gave me access to an early version of the tool, allowing me to try out an array of custom voices and the ability to generate one down to the smallest details. Here's how it went.
Once you're on the Hume system, you get a few options. You can choose from a selection of pre-set voices, but that's not what we're here for. The new feature on offer is the ability to design a voice.
Do this and you'll enter a conversation with an AI. This will ask you questions about the voice you want to generate. Either you can take control, pitching an exact style of voice you want, or you can allow Hume to suggest options for you to take a guided approach.
I tried a variety of different options here, some pretty simple in nature, some overly complicated and specific. Impressively, most of the voices fit my descriptions pretty closely.
For example, the first voice I asked for was raspy and low in energy. It had a villainous nature, similar to a bad guy you would see in a fantasy film who rules over some evil kingdom.

Incredibly specific, but a few minutes later, I had a voice that fit this exact description chatting away to me. Not only is the tone matched, but also his vocal mannerisms, mocking me and being sarcastic in his tone.
Next, a British game show host, complete with an old-fashioned accent, a lot of energy, and an overly positive nature. Again, both accent and tone are matched up to the request surprisingly well.
I went on to try an array of different voices, ranging from pirate-like in nature to very simple American accents. All of which were achieved by Hume.
This isn't to say it was perfect throughout. Sometimes the voices would clip, revealing a slight robotic-sounding voice or a slip in the accent. It is also always clear you're talking to an AI, however, only slightly so, still sounding more human than robot.
You can also only design these specific voices by having a back-and-forth voice conversation with Hume AI. It would be great to be able to add text prompts to generate them, especially when you can't speak.
This also means it takes twice as long to generate a voice, having to work through a long conversation to get a result. It's a small but noticeable concern.
Compared to text, video, and image generation, AI voice generation hasn't seen the same push. Companies like Elevenlabs have been at the forefront, and the likes of Google and OpenAI have made progress in the field.
However, this is the best attempt I've seen in terms of customisation on the voices, not to mention in the tone and personality of said voices.
Hume claims that in a blind comparison against OpenAI's GPT-4o, EVI 3 was rated higher, on average, on empathy, expressiveness, naturalness, interruption quality, response speed, and audio quality.
The company also claims that the model outperformed GPT-4o, Gemini, and Sesame (a popular AI voice system) in ratings of how well it acted out a wide range of emotions and styles to study participants.
This, for now, puts Hume in a great place in the market. However, AI moves fast. While it currently stands out as a leader in AI voice generation, especially in terms of creative expression, they'll have to keep the updates coming to stay ahead.
You can try Hume's Evi 3 now on the Hume AI dashboard.

Powering AI: Here's what to know about Meta's new nuclear deal with Constellation Energy

Meta has signed a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy to keep open its Clinton Clean Energy Center nuclear facility in Illinois, a move that will help feed the tech giant's enormous power needs in the artificial intelligence era. The household auto fleet is a money pit Where are the wildfires in Canada? Maps pinpoint the location of fires and air-quality threats from smoke This company asked most corporate employees to relocate to Chicago. The majority declined The deal takes effect June 2027, right as Illinois's zero-emission credit (ZEC) program expires and the energy center loses its ratepayer-funded financial assistance for being a carbon-free facility. By keeping the plant in operation until at least 2047, the center will directly provide power to the local grid and support Meta's clean energy goals of matching its energy use with solely renewable energy. 'This deal will expand Clinton's clean energy output by 30 megawatts through plant uprates, preserve 1,100 high-paying local jobs, deliver $13.5 million in annual tax revenue, and add $1 million in charitable giving to local nonprofits over five years,' Joseph Dominguez, president and CEO of Constellation, said in a statement. Meta's deal comes as a number of Big Tech companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, are seeking out nuclear energy alternatives to power AI's growing demand. Although the center will be using the power to support the regional grid in central and southern Illinois, the tech giant will purchase 1,121 megawatts of nuclear energy from the facility, nearly all the energy the center will have the capacity to produce. Urvi Parekh, head of global energy at Meta, said the partnership will secure the clean reliable energy that is necessary to advance Meta's AI ambitions. 'We are proud to help keep the Clinton plant operating for years to come and demonstrate that this plant is an important piece to strengthening American leadership in energy,' Parekh said. Following the announcement on Tuesday, Constellation's stock price (Nasdaq: CEG) increased around 1%. However, the stock was largely flat by midafternoon. Shares in Meta Platforms (Nasdaq: META), parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, were also flat on Tuesday. This post originally appeared at to get the Fast Company newsletter:

Sundar Pichai is vibe coding. 'It feels so delightful to be a coder.'

Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, is casually building a web page with AI coding tools. "It feels so delightful to be a coder in this moment," Pichai said at Bloomberg Tech on Wednesday. Pichai said engineers are still needed in the age of AI coding tools. Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, is doing something unexpected for one of the biggest names in tech: casually building web apps with AI coding assistants. "I wish I could do more," Pichai said on Wednesday at Bloomberg Tech in San Francisco. "I've just been messing around — either with Cursor or I vibe coded with Replit — trying to build a custom webpage with all the sources of information I wanted in one place. I could type a location and get it all," Pichai said. The web app is "partially complete," he added. "Vibe coding," coined by OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy in February, describes giving AI prompts to write code. As Karpathy puts it, developers can "fully give in to the vibes" and "forget the code even exists." The rise of vibe coding has shaken the way people think about software development. It has left some engineers wondering if AI could put them out of a job and sparked debate among investors over whether technical skills are still a must-have for startup founders. Tech giants like Amazon are also embracing vibe coding for workers' productivity. Business Insider's Eugene Kim reported on Wednesday that Amazon is in talks to adopt the AI coding tool Cursor for its employees. It's also helping nontechnical people build apps. A Block product designer with no formal engineering training told BI she built a dog ID app in two months through vibe coding. "It's exciting to see how casually you can do it now," Pichai said. "Compared to the early days of coding, things have come a long way." "It feels so delightful to be a coder in this moment," he added. Pichai did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Software engineers in the AI era Asked whether software engineers are still needed in the age of AI coding tools, Pichai said, "I think so, yes." The sentiment echoes a growing consensus among some tech leaders: AI may supercharge developers, but it won't replace them. Instead, it's shifting what the job looks like — from boilerplate coding to a more fluid and creative collaboration between human and machine. Windsurf's CEO, Varun Mohan, said on a recent podcast that if AI can take over repetitive tasks like boilerplate coding, developers will be freed up to focus on what really matters — testing bold ideas. Mohan said engineering is starting to look more like a research-driven culture, one in which developers test hypotheses, evaluate them, and get user feedback. Those are steps that make a product significantly better, he said. Startups should never be hiring engineers to "quickly write boilerplate code," he added. Other tech CEOs are issuing warnings about the future of the engineering profession. OpenAI's Sam Altman has said that demand for software engineers could eventually dip. "My basic assumption is that each software engineer will just do much, much more for a while. And then at some point, yeah, maybe we do need less software engineers," he said in March, referring to OpenAI's hiring strategy. He also predicted that AI-driven job displacement won't happen all at once but will accelerate over time. "It kind of just seeps through the economy and mostly kind of like eats things little by little and then faster and faster," Altman said.

South Korea's Hanwha to offload Eutelsat stake, filing shows

By Gianluca Lo Nostro (Reuters) -South Korea's Hanwha Systems is offering to sell its entire 5.4% stake in Eutelsat for about 78 million euros ($85 million), a bookrunner filing showed on Wednesday, as the satellite operator moves ahead with its new financing plan. Eutelsat has garnered unprecedented attention this year from governments looking for home-grown alternatives to SpaceX's Starlink for satellite internet connectivity. The Franco-British company is seeking billions in new funding to finance the second generation of its low Earth orbit (LEO) OneWeb satellites and to fulfil commitments to the European Union's IRIS² project. Finance chief Christophe Caudrelier said in May that Eutelsat was looking for capital investors. Hanwha's shares are being offered at 3.00 euros ($3.42) apiece, representing a 13.9% discount to Eutelsat's closing price of 3.48 euros on Wednesday, a term sheet from bookrunner Citi showed. It also marks a steep 74% loss on Hanwha's initial $300 million investment made in OneWeb in 2021, as the stake is now valued at just $85 million. The trade is set to be concluded on Thursday. A representative for Hanwha resigned from Eutelsat's board in April, signalling the Korean company's diminishing involvement with the satellite operator. Eutelsat is reshuffling its upper echelons. In a surprise move last month, it appointed Jean-François Fallacher as its new CEO and it is also looking for a new chairperson after the current one announced his departure along with four other board members in February. Hanwha became a shareholder in OneWeb before it merged with Eutelsat in 2023, joining India's Bharti and Japan's SoftBank as OneWeb's anchor investors at the time. It is also one of OneWeb's distributors in South Korea as part of an agreement signed in 2023 with the aim of securing LEO communications for the Korean government and providing internet access to underserved areas. Last week, South Korea's Science Ministry granted licenses to Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb to operate in the country, with services expected to be launched soon. ($1 = 0.8764 euros)
