US stars touch down ahead of Aviva Stadium 'College Football Classic'
But this week in Dublin it's the turn of 'Farmageddon' to show just how strong those ties still are.
That's the name fans of the Kansas State Wildcats and the Iowa State Cyclones give to their college football rivalry. And this week the rivalry comes to the Aviva Stadium for 'Week Zero' of the US college football season. Over 24,000 international fans will be here for the 2025 Aer Lingus College Football Classic which kicks off at 5pm on Saturday.
It's one of the great displays of Irish 'soft power' that is keeping the green flag flying in these difficult times in the US. The Aer Lingus College Football Classic sells itself on its slogan of #MuchMoreThanAGame .
It really represents a week-long celebration of transatlantic connections, encompassing business, cultural, political and community events.
Since Wednesday a comprehensive schedule of activities and events has been unfolding across the city, offering a unique and diverse range of entertainment for visiting fans and locals alike. Here will be mini fleadhs, marching bands and fashion days out in Kildare Village.
This year's game is projected to generate over €130 million for the local Irish economy, driven primarily by the travelling U.S. visitors expected to attend the game. Combined with the previous three games already hosted in Ireland, delivering an economic boost of €382m as per the Grant Thornton Economic Impact Reports, these initial four games in the series are now set to contribute over €512m.
As title sponsor, the national airline Aer Lingus also plays a pivotal role in the event's success.
The airline is responsible for flying both the Kansas State University and Iowa State University teams, their coaching staff, and delegations to Dublin on specially chartered flights this week.
Both teams are travelling with 125 members of their cheer squad and bands, adding to the celebratory atmosphere in Dublin this week.
The excitement extends beyond the Aviva Stadium. Key events for fans include the high-energy Pep Rallies for both universities.
'Tailgating' pubs, sponsored by Guinness and Teeling Whiskey, will be active all week, including iconic Dublin pubs such as The Old Store House and Dame Tavern.
The Global Ireland Football Tournament (GIFT) high school games take place in Energia Park on Friday, August 22nd. This year's GIFT will feature a compelling double-header: New Jersey's 'The Hun School' will face the NFL Academy UK, followed by a match-up between Pennsylvania's 'The Kiski School' and the U19 'Irish Wolfhounds'.
Further reinforcing the event's wider impact, the week will feature numerous events designed to strengthen Irish-U.S. ties, including agricultural, and political events and meetups as well as high-level business networking functions, and academic symposiums.
Spectators attending the game are encouraged to be in their seats by 4:15 PM to enjoy the full pre-game spectacle and atmosphere that the teams and organisers will bring to the Aviva Stadium.
A new addition to this year's event will see the debut of 'Celtic The Brave' the official mascot of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. A full schedule of events can be found on the Official Game Week App.

Russell Henley surges clear at Tour Championship with Rory McIlroy in the chasing pack
Russell Henley shot 61 to move into a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Tour Championship, finishing with three straight birdies to move to nine under par. It leaves him two clear of defending champion Scottie Scheffler, the world number one finishing on his own in second place at the East Lake Golf Club. Rory McIlroy was the best of the Irish on four under par, with Shane Lowry finishing on even par. McIlroy made it to the turn on three under, after a spectacular 30-foot putt for eagle at seven. The back nine was more mixed as the county Down man mixed three birdies with two bogeys. For Lowry, it was a more consistent day, with two birdies and two bogeys to finish on level par. The course was set up to be more challenging with pins tucked in corners of the greens but it mattered little. In total, 22 of the 30 players were under par, six players were even and just two players were over par. The combined score of the field was 82 under par. Perhaps it was the heavy rain that pummelled the Atlanta area Tuesday and Wednesday that helped the golfers, with Round 1 played under preferred lies rules due to evening downpours. This allowed balls on the fairways or other closely mown areas to be lifted, cleaned and placed in a preferred spot. The Tour Championship winner will also be crowned FedEx champion and will pocket the $10m on offer, which equates to roughly €8.6m.

Scottie Scheffler outguns Rory McIIroy on day one in battle for Tour Championship
Henley, who has already qualified for Keegan Bradley's US Ryder Cup team, made 207 feet of putts to lead by two from Scheffler, who shot 63 to McIlroy's 66. European Ryder Cup qualifiers Robert MacInytre and Tommy Fleetwood and US wildcard hopefuls Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay and Justin Thomas shot 64s to share third as McIlroy's 66 left him tied for eighth. Henley was impressive but Scheffler was his usual relentless self as he bids to sweep the three playoff events and retain the FedExCup in what is a winner-takes-all affair in Atlanta this year. Battling each other for PGA Tour Player of the Year honours, it was Scheffler who had the better of the early exchanges as he birdied the second and third to move swiftly to two under. After making birdie at the par-five sixth, he watched McIlroy make eagle from 30 feet there and then birdie the seventh from seven feet to close the gap to two strokes. The world No. 1 then birdied the 10th to go three ahead and after McIlroy followed a birdie at the 11th with a three-putt bogey the 14th, there was still just a shot between them as both made twos at the short 15th. There was a chance of a two-shot swing in McIlroy's favour at the 16th but Scheffler made a 26-footer for par and the Holywood star left a 13-foot birdie chance on the lip. In the end, the two-shot swing came at the 17th, where Scheffler brushed in a 27-footer to get to six under as McIlroy bunkered his approach and made bogey to slip back to three under. McIlroy and Scheffler both found sand at the 18th but as the American got up and down, the Masters champion caromed off the grandstand behind the green and made the resulting 17-footer for birdie to stay in touch. Shane Lowry made two birdies and two bogeys in a level par 70 where he battled a lukewarm putter after also three putting the 14th. The Offaly man was tied for 23rd with the likes of US Ryder Cup skipper Keegan Bradley and European wildcard candidate Harry Hall.
