When will Springboks name team to face Wallabies?
After a couple of days off, the Springboks regrouped on Sunday to begin preparing for the back-to-back Test matches against the Wallabies in Johannesburg on Saturday 16 August and Cape Town on 23 August to start the Rugby Championship. There will be great excitement and anticipation for the first team announcement considering that it will provide some genuine insight into the thinking of Rassie Erasmus after plenty of experimenting with selection during the July internationals. Especially after seeing the Wallabies' competitive performances against the British & Irish Lions, Erasmus will surely be planning to bring a number of first-choice players and combinations into the mix for the first Test against Australia. It's expected that the first Springbok team of the Rugby Championship will be named on Tuesday, 12 August, with the exact time still to be confirmed. A recent training camp featured a series of gym and field training sessions, as well as boardroom sessions, and Erasmus said they will delve deeper into the opposition from this week. 'We have laid a good foundation, and next week we will zone more into what we expect from Australia and start developing plans to counter what we expect from them,' he said. 'They showed against the British & Irish Lions what they are capable of, so we need to be ready mentally and physically for what they will throw at us in South Africa.' The matches against Australia will be followed by successive Tests against the All Blacks in Auckland and Wellington (on 6 and 13 September) and Los Pumas in Durban and London (on 27 September and 4 October). 'We had an intense week of conditioning to get the players ready for what will undoubtedly be a challenging Rugby Championship campaign against some of the top teams in the world,' Erasmus added. 'So we are pleased with the strides made and the mind-shift the players made for what will be a completely different contest against Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina. 'We identified a few key areas of our game that we felt we needed to improve on after the Incoming Series, and we incorporated those areas into our training and conditioning blocks this week. 'The teams we will face in the next few months will ask different questions and pose different challenges, so it was important for the group to align on what to expect in the next few weeks, so this camp was vital in ensuring that we prepare adequately for what lies ahead.' Pirates coach delivers verdict on Mariko
Mariko showed some glimpses of what he is capable of when he came on for Mbule just after the hour mark. Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is 'looking forward' to seeing Abdoulaye Mariko establish himself as one of the fan-favourites at the Soweto giants. Mariko was one of six new players who made their debuts for Pirates during their 2-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday. The other debutants were Oswin Appollis, Sipho Mbule, Sihle Nduli, Tshepang Moremi and Yanela Mbuthuma. Ouaddou has cautioned that there is still a lot of work to be done to make Mariko the kind of player that made him the best player in the Malian Première Division before joining Pirates. 'Mariko is a very interesting young player, he was the top scorer in Mali, he took the award as the best player in the league and top scorer, he's come in a new environment in a big club,' said Ouaddou during the post-match conference at Orlando Stadium. 'He has lots of quality, as you may have seen today, but we still need to improve him and bring him to the high level. It's not easy when you're coming into a new country, a new culture. He has to integrate himself into the team and learn the language.' Ouaddou also revealed what he told Mariko when he arrived at Pirates. 'It's the first thing I told him he has to do, and that is to learn English in order to integrate himself in the team. But the expectation for him is like all the players, to give his best and be the best for Orlando Pirates, because there's a lot of expectation, inside the country and on the continent. He knows that, I think he's a top man, his personality is good and he's a good player,' added Ouaddou. Ouaddou said he would give the other new signings a chance to play during the season, but insists that the new recruits need to show him at training that they are ready. New players like Masindi Nemtajela, Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Nkosikhona Ndaba and Tshepo Mashiloane did not feature for Pirates during their win against Polokwane City. But I don't just give chances because I want to please them, I give chances because you show me in training that you can bring something to the team, so all the guys you have seen come in, they showed me something in pre-season.'

Orlando Pirates unveil Malian sensation but demands this first
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has confirmed that new signing Abdoulaye Mariko made a strong first impression, but insists the young forward must quickly learn English to fully settle into life in South Africa. Mariko, 22, came off the bench during Pirates' 2-0 win over Polokwane City in the MTN8 opener, producing a lively second-half cameo that thrilled the crowd and sparked growing excitement around his potential impact in the upcoming season. The former Djoliba forward arrived at Mayfair with high expectations after a stunning campaign in the Malian Ligue 1, where he claimed both the Golden Boot and Player of the Season awards. His namesake, also Abdoulaye Mariko, joined Pirates from Djoliba as well but will spend the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Chippa United. Ouaddou recognised the potential in his new recruit but stressed the importance of adapting both on and off the pitch. 'Mariko is a very interesting young player, he was the top scorer in Mali, he took the award as the best player in the league and top scorer, he's come in a new environment in a big club,' Ouaddou said. While praising Mariko's talent and debut display, the coach underlined the challenges of adapting to a new culture, environment and team dynamic. 'He has lots of quality, as you may have seen today, but we still need to improve him and bring him to the high level. It's not easy when you're coming into a new country, with new culture – he has to integrate himself to the team, have to learn the language.' 'It's the first thing I told him he has to do, to learn English in order to integrate himself in the team – but the expectation for him is like all the players, to give his best and be the best for Orlando Pirates, because there's a lot of expectation, inside the country and on the continent.' Mariko featured alongside five other debutants during Pirates' confident start to the new season. Sipho Mbule, Sihle Nduli, Oswin Appollis, Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi all pulled on the jersey for the first time. Ouaddou remains optimistic about Mariko's potential, stating. 'And he knows that, I think he's a top man, the personality is good and he's a good player, yeah.' Will Mariko be a hit at Orlando Pirates?
