2026 BMW M2 CS Is the Most Powerful Rear-Drive M Car You Can Buy
The 2026 BMW M2 CS features a 523-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six, making it the mightiest rear-wheel-drive M car.
The CS is also lighter than the M2 Competition, and it's only offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The new M2 CS will start at $99,775 when it goes on sale sometime later this year.
Let's get your first question out of the way: No, there is no manual version of the new 2026 BMW M2 CS. All versions of the most performance-oriented M2 will come with an eight-speed automatic. This decision isn't surprising since the CS (short for Competition Sport) is the ultimate M2, the one designed to produce the best acceleration and lap times. But when M2 customers are saving the manuals—half of all M2s sold in the United States have a six-speed manual—the question makes sense. The last M2 CS offered a manual and was a rare and wonderful little beast of a car.
A More Muscular M2
There's better news under the hood where the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six now makes 523 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. That's 50 more ponies and 36 more pound-feet than the standard M2, and it's 79 hp more than the previous-generation M2 CS. The engine is a version of the M3 Competition xDrive's, but it is 20 horses shy of the 543-hp screamer in the M3 CS. BMW resisted adding all-wheel drive, making the M2 CS the most powerful rear-drive M car you can buy.

Like its predecessor, the CS undergoes a weight-loss diet that includes a carbon-fiber roof, trunk lid, mirror caps, and the rear diffuser. We're told the ducktail rear spoiler that flips up coquettishly is functional besides looking good. Up front, the styling doesn't change, but the air passages are optimized to flow more air into the radiators.
Inside, there are M carbon racing-style seats and various interior trim bits. Coupled with the standard forged aluminum wheels, BMW claims the CS comes in at 3770 pounds, a near 100-pound reduction. But the last M2 (a manual) weighed 3745 pounds on our scales, less than BMW's 3814-pound claim for that same car. So, BMW's number for the new M2 CS is likely conservative. For those looking to shed more weight, carbon-ceramic brakes are an $8500 option.

Surprisingly, we haven't tested the current M2 with an automatic, so a direct comparison of the specifications is a little complicated. In our hands, the manual-equipped M2 hit 60 in 3.9 seconds. BMW claims a believable 3.7 seconds for the new CS, which is 0.2 second quicker than the company's claim for the 473-hp, automatic M2.
A thorough retuning of the suspension has us eagerly anticipating our first chance to drive the new M2 CS. Its predecessor had a wonderfully direct and willing feel that made approaching its cornering limits a joy. The CS now sits 0.2 inch lower thanks to new springs. The adaptive dampers are also unique to the CS and have their own programming. Stability control and M Dynamic mode have been tweaked as well to let drivers have a little more leeway before coming to the rescue.

A Nearly Six-Figure M2
Slated to go on sale before the end of the year, the 2026 BMW M2 CS will start at $99,775, which amounts to $33,100 more than the regular 2025 M2's base price. All M2s, including the CS, are made in BMW's Mexican plant, so some of the CS's lofty price is likely a reflection of the current tariffs in the United States. If the tariff situation continues, we'd expect the M2 to cost more next year, shrinking the price gap between the standard car and the CS, but it's too early to say for sure. And to the M2 buyers who own the six-speed, thank you for saving the manuals.

Trump Aides Insist That Tariffs Will Remain, Even After Court Ruling
President Trump's top economic advisers stressed on Sunday that they would not be deterred by a recent court decision that declared many of the administration's tariffs to be illegal, as they pointed out a variety of additional authorities that the White House could invoke as it looks to pressure China and others into negotiations. They also signaled that Mr. Trump had no plans to extend an original 90-day pause on some of his steepest tariff rates, raising the odds that those duties — the mere announcement of which had roiled markets — could take effect as planned in July. 'Rest assured, tariffs are not going away,' Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, said during an appearance on 'Fox News Sunday.' Asked about the future of the president's so-called reciprocal tariffs, first announced and quickly suspended in April, Mr. Lutnick added, 'I don't see today that an extension is coming.' The president's tariff strategy entered uncharted political and legal territory last week after a federal trade court ruled that Mr. Trump had misused an emergency economic powers law in trying to wage a global trade war. The decision would have put a quick halt to those duties, which form the centerpiece of the president's strategy of pressuring other countries into trade talks. But an appeals court soon granted the government a brief administrative pause to sort out arguments in the case, which is expected to reach the Supreme Court. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Toyota Says a New Supra is Already in the Works
The Toyota Supra is on its way out - again. Production of the fifth-generation GR Supra, co-developed with BMW and built in Austria alongside the Z4, is set to end by spring 2026. Toyota has already announced a Final Edition for the 2026 model year, signaling the end of this chapter, but the Supra nameplate isn't being retired. Not yet. In recent interviews with MotorTrend, Toyota executives confirmed that while the Supra will go on hiatus, it's expected to return. "It would be logical that we would have a next-gen Supra," said Cooper Ericksen, senior vice president of product planning and strategy for Toyota Motor North America. "But when and how is still TBD." What is clear is that the gap between Supra generations won't be as long as last time. Fans will recall the two-decade stretch between the legendary fourth-generation Supra and its modern GR-branded reboot in 2019. Ericksen insists that Toyota's goal is to shorten that downtime significantly, though he didn't offer a concrete timeline. Cost is a major factor. New global regulations, particularly around emissions and safety, are pushing automakers to either invest heavily in updates or start from scratch. For Toyota, refreshing the Supra isn't feasible without a full overhaul. "It needs to be a new house," Ericksen said. "When we can get the new house built is the question." Toyota hasn't officially greenlit a successor, but the intention is there. Whether the next Supra will be built in partnership, as the current one was with BMW, or like the GR86 with Subaru BRZ, remains undecided. David Christ, general manager of Toyota's U.S. division, said he'd love to be involved in planning a new Supra, but admitted the decision lies with Toyota's global leadership in Japan. There's also the issue of prioritization. Toyota is currently overhauling its core lineup, including the recently revealed 2026 RAV4, which debuts a new electric platform, multimedia suite, and safety tech. With more than 30 Toyota and Lexus models in the U.S. alone, the company's resources are stretched. It's hard to argue that the Supra has carved out a loyal niche. Since its return, Toyota has leaned hard into enthusiast models under its Gazoo Racing (GR) sub-brand - from the GR Corolla to the GR86 - and a next-gen Supra would only bolster that identity. "We'll just have to wait and see," Ericksen said. "My goal is to get a great next-gen product that our enthusiast crowd can fall in love with again." So yes, the Supra is leaving, but not for good. The wait might be frustrating, but at least this time, it won't take 20 years. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
