2026 NBA Draft Lottery Candidates: A.J. Dybantsa Tops List; Where's Cam Boozer?
The BYU signee has been a favorite to sit atop draft boards next summer and ranks as the nation's top recruit by ESPN, On3 and Rivals. Kansas signee Darryn Peterson tops the list for 247Sports to make it a more open race for No. 1.
Here's an early look at next summer's potential lottery prospects: 1. A.J. Dybantsa, BYU
The 6-foot-9 forward chose the Cougars over Kansas, North Carolina and Alabama. Athleticism and versatility shine through his rangy scoring skill set, notably when he attacks off the dribble and finishes at the rim. The Massachusetts native spent last year with Utah Prep and is on this summer's USA Basketball Under-19 National Team for the FIBA World Cup. 2. Darryn Peterson, Kansas
The 6-foot-5 guard from Ohio offers perimeter size with the ability to play on or off the ball. He can attack off the dribble or step outside, offering the potential to overwhelm smaller guards and impact games defensively. Peterson played last season with Prolific Prep in California and was co-MVP of the McDonald's All-American game. 3. Cameron Boozer, Duke
The 6-9 forward joined his twin brother, Cayden, in winning a high school national title and fourth straight Florida state title. The son of former Duke and NBA forward Carlos Boozer showed his inside-out game (22 points, 16 rebounds, six assists) to lead the U.S. past the World team in the Nike Hoop Summit. He joined Peterson as the McDonald's Game co-MVP. 4. Nate Ament, Tennessee
The 6-9 forward is a McDonald's All-American and Gatorade player of the year in the state of Virginia with versatile skills. He'll improve as he adds strength to his lean frame, though he stands out with ballhandling and shooting range. 5. Caleb Wilson, North Carolina
The 6-9 forward from Atlanta and McDonald's All-American offers two-way potential with his athleticism and length, including as a shot blocker. The McDonald's All-American announced his UNC commitment on TNT's "Inside The NBA" show alongside former NBA players Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith. 6. Chris Cenac Jr., Houston
ESPN and 247Sports rank Cenac as the nation's top center, offering rangy skills and outside shooting that made him the MVP of the NBPA Top 100 camp in summer 2024. Houston coach Kelvin Sampson has said the McDonald's All-American is "not a big man's big man... he is a basketball player who happens to be 6-10." 7. Karim Lopez, New Zealand Breakers (Australia)
The versatile 6-8 wing from Mexico is part of the National Basketball League's "Next Stars" program designed to develop high-end prospects, averaging 9.6 points and 4.7 assists in his 2024-25 debut season. He turns 18 in December. 8. Jayden Quaintance, Kentucky
The 6-9 forward was a top-10 recruit last year entering Arizona State, where he averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks. He later transferred to join the Wildcats. 9. Mikel Brown Jr., Louisville
The 6-3 McDonald's All-American is a big signee for Pat Kelsey entering Year 2 of his tenure with the Cardinals. He joined Dybantsa in making the U.S. U-19 team. 10. Darius Acuff Jr., Arkansas
The 6-2 Acuff is the top point guard prospect for 247Sports (No. 5 overall) and ESPN (No. 7). The McDonald's All-American operates smoothly in the pick-and-roll with the ability to attack defenders off the dribble and from 3-point range. 11. Tounde Yessoufou, Baylor
ESPN's ninth-ranked recruit offers a sturdy frame (roughly 6-5 and 210 pounds) and versatile athleticism while being known for his high-motor style. He had 24 points for the World team against the U.S. in the Nike Hoop Summit in April. 12. Dash Daniels, Melbourne United (Australia)
Like Lopez, the younger brother of Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels will play for the NBL's "Next Stars" program. Dash is a 6-6 point guard who has been through NBA Academy Australia. 13. Isaiah Evans, Duke
The 6-6 guard withdrew from this year's draft and must add strength to his 175-pound frame. But there's clear upside with his explosive scoring potential, such as hitting six first-half 3s out of nowhere against Auburn in December. 14. Labaron Philon, Alabama
The 6-4 freshman point guard was a last-minute draft withdrawal. He averaged 10.6 points and 3.8 assists for an Elite Eight team that just lost first-team All-American Mark Sears from the backcourt. Others to watch:
—Alijah Arenas: The son of former NBA guard Gilbert Arenas is a McDonald's All-American known for scoring and court vision, but the 6-6 guard's status is unclear as he's still working back from an April truck accident that had him placed in a medically induced coma. Arenas avoided major injury and said this week he works out daily, with the plan of soon joining USC summer workouts.
— Miles Byrd: The 6-7 guard from San Diego State withdrew from the draft after averaging 12.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists as a redshirt sophomore.
— Ian Jackson: The 6-4 guard averaged 11.9 points while shooting 39.5% from 3-point range at North Carolina as a five-star freshman before transferring to St. John's.
— Yaxel Lendeborg: The 6-9, 240-pound forward has gone from junior college to UAB and now Michigan. He withdrew from the draft after averaging 15.8 points and 11.0 rebounds in two seasons with the Blazers.
— Tahaad Pettiford: The 6-1 freshman averaged 11.6 points and shot 36.6% on 3s for Auburn's Final Four team. He's set for a leading role after withdrawing from the draft.
— Meleek Thomas: The 6-4 guard averaged 33.5 points per 40 minutes with Overtime Elite. He's a McDonald's All-American who signed with Arkansas.

Steph Curry lands in top five of Hoops Hype's top-26 point guards for 2025-26 season
With the offseason slowing down and the start of training camp around the corner, Hoops Hype is preparing for the start of the upcoming season with their set of projected rankings of the top-26 point guards for the 2025-26 season. Frank Urbina and the Hoops Hype team ranked Steph Curry just inside the top five on the list of projections at No. 5 overall. Urbina called Curry's ranking at No. 5 one of the "hotter takes" in this set of projections. Via Hoops Hype: Our logic isn't overly complicated. We're just taking into account the fact that Curry is 37 years old with a lot of miles on his body, along with the fact that there are a good amount of elite point guards projected to have big seasons in 2025-26. Despite Curry's age at 37, the sharpshooting guard is coming off another productive season, earning All-Star honors and a spot on the second-team All-NBA. While helping lead the Warriors through the play-in game to the second round of the postseason, Curry averaged 24.5 points on 44.8% shooting from the field and 39.7% from beyond the arc while adding six assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. Alongside Jimmy Butler, the Warriors will need Curry to have another signature campaign in 2025-26 to compete for a spot in the playoffs. The four players landing in front of Curry in the top five included Detroit's Cade Cunningham (No. 4), New York's Jalen Brunson (No. 3), Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic (No. 2), and reigning Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (No. 1). Crystal Palace and Liverpool meet at Wembley on Sunday in the FA Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser for the domestic season in England. American billionaire Woody Johnson has agreed to buy the majority stake in the club from fellow American John Textor whose Eagles Football group are at the center of the dispute over Palace's demotion to the Conference League. On the pitch they've managed to keep hold of key players Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze for now. Liverpool continue to mourn the loss of Diogo Jota after his tragic death in a car accident in Spain over the summer. On the pitch, Arne Slot has added plenty of new players this summer with Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong all arriving to boost his squad. Luis Diaz has left and Darwin Nunez appears to be on the way out too to help offset some of the huge spending, while Alexander Isak is also a target for Liverpool. New York Knicks mailbag: Which player might benefit most under Mike Brown?
Earlier this week, I did Part 1 of my offseason New York Knicks mailbag, tackling questions about Mikal Bridges' extension, Mitchell Robinson's future and more. Below is Part 2 with questions surrounding who might step up with new head coach Mike Brown on the sideline. Plus, does the coach have to win an NBA championship immediately to stay around? We get into these questions and more. If Brown plays 10 guys, who's the 10th? — @ Before he was fired by the Sacramento Kings last season, Brown seemed to play seven or eight guys for heavy-to-good minutes and then hand a few other players spot minutes. I'd be surprised if Brown played 10 regulars on a nightly basis, but it's also possible that is something the suits want him to do and was a selling point for the job. Advertisement For the sake of your question, here is the players on the roster currently who will certainly play every night if healthy: Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Bridges, Miles McBride, Mitchell Robinson, Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele. I feel confident in saying Brown will, at the very least, use a nine-man rotation to begin the season. It's possible he extends it to 10, and that may depend on who the Knicks sign with the veteran-minimum contract they have available to use. The team could still use a more traditional, veteran backup point guard. It's also possible that Brown gives a youngster like Pacôme Dadiet some of the spot minutes like he gave to Alex Len while in Sacramento. As of early August, though, my gut tells me that Brown will use a nine-man rotation made up of the list I provided above. Given his past and the Knicks' current roster, how will Brown most change the O and the D compared to last year? Which players will most benefit from these changes? — @ While the Knicks won't play with quite the same pace the Kings did under Brown (that's largely because of personnel), I do believe the team will attempt to play faster, particularly in the half court. Pace isn't just about getting up and down the floor quicker than your opponent. That's certainly part of it. Pace is also about making quick decisions and moving the basketball. Those will probably be the most visible changes under Brown early on. On defense, that's a bit trickier to answer right now. I'm not sure if he'll start Towns and Robinson together or Towns at the five with Anunoby at the four. Until we know that answer, it's hard to say how New York's defense will change. I'd imagine we won't see Bridges at the point of attack for 90 percent of possessions. I could see Brown allowing guys like Anunoby to do that a bit more throughout the regular season. Advertisement To answer your last question, I think Bridges will benefit the most from Brown as head coach. Brown had some cool sets to get DeMar DeRozan the ball in the midrange during their time together in Sacramento, though their working relationship was short-lived. Bridges isn't the midrange shooter that DeRozan is, but he's a damn good one and very clearly enjoys occupying that space on the floor. With that, I think we'll see more sets where Towns is operating as the hub of the offense and facilitating some of the off-ball actions with his passing. Does Brown need to win the championship to keep his job? — @ Barring locker-room turmoil or just some disaster of epic proportions in the win-loss column, I think there's a 0.1 percent chance that Brown is let go after this upcoming season if New York doesn't win the title. The expectations placed on him are heavy, but everyone who created these expectations — a.k.a. his bosses — also have to be somewhat realistic. The Knicks are still paying Tom Thibodeau for multiple years. I just can't see an owner being willing to pay two coaches tens of millions of dollars to, well, not coach and then have to turn around and hire another coach. The optics surrounding that hypothetical situation would not be great for anyone involved with the franchise. Now, the Detroit Pistons did pay two coaches at once to not coach after Dwane Casey transitioned from head coach to the front office and then Monty Williams was hired to a then-record contract only to be fired after his first season. To be fair, the decision worked out for Detroit, other than owner Tom Gores setting money on fire. The Pistons went from 17 wins in Casey's final season to 14 under Williams in his first season, including a historic losing streak. Something had to be done. A mistake had to be acknowledged. The Pistons did that and are on an upward trajectory under J.B. Bickerstaff. Whether or not the Knicks will be better this year than last is still to be determined, but I can guarantee Brown won't fail to the level Williams did with the Pistons. Advertisement Under Brown, the Knicks have to be routine title contenders going forward. Winning the championship isn't easy. Too many outside factors out of people's control play into that. If New York drops out of the title hunt after two seasons or is trending backward, then I'd assume conversations will take place surrounding Brown's future. An obvious one: Do you see Hart as the fifth starter? And if not, will it be Mitch, Deuce or someone else? — @ This is probably the question everyone — including us reporters — are curious to see answered throughout camp. We're still two months away from that, so it's hard to say right now. However, if you're asking me to guess, with the addition and versatility of Yabusele, I believe that Brown will start both Robinson and Towns together and then insert Yabusele into one of the frontcourt spots early in the game. Ultimately, I think Brown ends up valuing defense with that starting group, and putting Robinson with the starters says more about needing to protect Towns than it does about Hart's ability on that end of the floor. It's really hard to win at a high level with two limited defenders like the Knicks would have if last year's starting lineup remained the same. Hence why I believe Robinson ends up starting.
