Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is down nearly 5% from its all-time high of $122,838, trading at $116,880 as of Tuesday morning European time, as the broader crypto market pauses ahead of key macroeconomic data and reacts to a spike in large-scale on-chain activity.
Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) has also dipped, down 2.5% to around $2,980.
What Experts Are Saying: Speaking with Benzinga, analysts say the move is largely a correction following a rapid run-up, compounded by heightened uncertainty around U.S. inflation data and growing signs of profit-taking by major holders.
"It's expected that after a large run, some correction is likely, especially following an uninterrupted move from $108K to $122K," said Nicolai Sondergaard, Research Analyst at Nansen. "We now see quite some heavy liquidation levels around $116.3K which is something to watch next as an immediate psychological level."

On-chain data from CryptoQuant confirms that whales—large Bitcoin holders—have begun repositioning.
According to the firm, over 1,800 BTC were deposited onto Binance in a single day, with transactions over $1 million accounting for more than 35% of total inflows.
These movements are typically viewed as precursors to increased volatility.
"This activity on Binance is a critical market signal," the firm noted, citing the exchange's dominant position in global spot and derivatives trading.
The whale inflows suggest either profit-taking after the rally or preparations to hedge against downside risk ahead of CPI data.
Bitfinex analysts attributed the pullback to a combination of factors, including the recent rally's exhaustion and caution ahead of U.S. inflation figures due later today. "Bitcoin's recent pullback appears to be a natural breather following fresh all-time highs, alongside a cautious wait-and-see stance ahead of today's CPI release."
They added that if core inflation exceeds 3.2%, it could delay Federal Reserve easing, lift the dollar, and put pressure on risk assets like Bitcoin.
"That would strengthen the dollar and hurt demand for non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, potentially extending the pullback by another 5–10%, based on prior CPI events."On the other hand, a softer-than-expected print—such as a headline figure below 2.5% and core easing toward 2.9%—could revive bullish momentum.
"A similar outcome today could push Bitcoin back toward $120K+ again especially if ETF inflows remain strong as they have in the past 2 weeks," Bitfinex said.
Longer term, structural factors such as U.S. tariffs could keep CPI elevated near 2.9%, which analysts say may limit the scale or duration of any policy-driven rally.
Altcoin markets, which had shown renewed strength following Bitcoin's recent high, are also under pressure.
Ryan Lee, Chief Analyst at Bitget Research, pointed to a typical capital rotation pattern: "The recent surge in altcoins following Bitcoin's all-time high reflects a classic capital rotation pattern, as traders seek higher beta plays after BTC's initial breakout."
Lee said Ethereum could range between $2,500 and $3,500 in Q3 depending on DeFi activity and ETF momentum, while Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) and XRP's (CRYPTO: XRP) trajectories will depend on network growth and regulatory outcomes respectively.
What's Next: Market experts suggest that the next move for Bitcoin and by extension, the rest of the crypto market, will hinge on today's inflation data and how it influences interest rate expectations.
Whale behavior and ETF flows will also remain key variables.

3 Crypto-Centric Stocks to Grab Before the Next Bitcoin Rally

The cryptocurrency market has been giving up gains lately, with Bitcoin (BTC) pulling back sharply after hitting a new all-time high last week. Several macro concerns, including uncertainty over a rate cut in September, have been denting investors' sentiment. However, the decline is temporary, and the cryptocurrency is poised to resume its northbound journey, given that it has already had a great year so far and a rate cut in the coming months is expected to give it a further push. It would thus be an ideal time to invest in crypto-focused stocks. We have selected three stocks, namely PayPal Holdings PYPL, Interactive Brokers Group IBKR and Robinhood Markets, Inc. HOOD. Each of these stocks has strong growth potential for 2025 and has seen positive earnings estimate revisions in the past 90 days. Bitcoin Retreats But Has More Room to Grow Bitcoin has declined 5% over the past week and was trading at $113,772.65 on Wednesday morning after hitting an all-time high of $124.496, its fourth record high this year. The high came following the release of the consumer price index (CPI) report. CPI for July rose less than expected, raising hopes that the Federal Reserve would go for a rate cut in September. However, the euphoria was short-lived after higher-than-expected wholesale inflation data raised fresh doubts over a September rate cut. Investor sentiment was further dented after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week that President Donald Trump's strategic bitcoin reserve, which was created in March, would only consist of bitcoin seized by the federal government, while officials look into 'budget-neutral pathways to acquire more Bitcoin.' However, experts believe that the decline in Bitcoin is temporary and once these macro concerns ease, the cryptocurrency will resume its rally. Although the Federal Reserve hasn't suggested any timeline for the next rate cut, markets are pricing in an 85% chance of a 25-basis-point rate cut in September, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. 3 Bitcoin-Centric Stocks With Upside PayPal Holdings PayPal Holdings provides digital wallet services that enable users to purchase, transfer and sell various cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin. US government pushes for 10% Intel stake amid US-China chip war

The US government could become the largest shareholder in Intel, one of the most important US technology companies, marking the first time Washington has sought ownership in a Silicon Valley icon. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday confirmed the US government is vying for a 10% stake in Intel, part of an unusual deal that would deepen the Trump administration's financial ties with the major chipmaker. The move comes weeks after US President Donald Trump called for Intel's CEO Lip-Bu Tan to resign due to what he claimed was a conflict of interest. This allegation was linked to Tan's previous role as a venture capitalist in China. Although rare, it is not unprecedented for the US government to become a significant shareholder in a prominent company. One of the most notable instances occurred during the recession in 2008, when the government injected nearly $50 billion (€42.94bn) into General Motors in return for a roughly 60% stake in the automaker when it was on the verge of bankruptcy. At the time, even that bailout was seen as controversial despite GM's hardships because it was perceived as blurring the lines between state control and US free market principles. Unlike many European companies, US ones have insisted on a complete separation between government and private ownership of enterprises. The government ended up with a roughly $10bn (€8.6bn) loss after it sold its stock in GM. A misreading of the CHIPS act? Intel historically led the world in semiconductor production, tied in particular to PC production and Microsoft. When the iPhone launched in 2007, Intel-dominated PC chips nonetheless failed to win a foothold in smartphones and tablets. ARM-based chips, which are used by Apple and Samsung, became the mobile standard, leaving Intel stuck in the declining PC market. Intel has also lagged in the AI race, with their traditional central processing units not being well-suited for AI workloads. On the other hand, competitors like Nvidia have surged ahead. The CHIPS and Science Act, often referred to as just the CHIPS Act, was a bill passed in August 2022 by former US President Joe Biden in order to boost the local US semiconductor industry. COVID-19 supply chain disruptions and US–China tech tensions highlighted how dependent the US had become on foreign-made chips, not just for consumer electronics, but also defence, cars, AI and infrastructure. In November 2024, the US Department of Commerce finalised an agreement to grant Intel up to $7.86bn (€6.75bn) in direct funding through the CHIPS Act to support their semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging operations across Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio and Oregon. Related Japan's SoftBank continues US investment as it moves to gain 2% stake in chip maker Intel Trump reverses course on Intel CEO amid US-China chip showdown Intel was among the biggest beneficiaries of the program, but it hasn't been able to revive its fortunes while falling behind on construction projects spawned by the CHIPS program. The company has received about $2.2bn (€1.89bn) of the $7.8bn (€6.75bn) pledged under the incentives program — money that Lutnick derided as a 'giveaway' that would better serve US taxpayers if it is turned into Intel stock, which he said would be in the form of non-voting shares so the government wouldn't be able to use the stake to sway how the company is managed. 'We think America should get the benefit of the bargain,' Lutnick told CNBC as he explained why Trump is pushing for the deal. 'It's obvious that it's the right move to make.' The notion of the US government holding a huge stake in Intel would have seemed inconceivable back in the company's heyday when its processors were powering a personal computer boom that began in the mid-1970s. But Intel's ongoing struggles also means the US government is taking on a risky investment. Related Intel's stock tumbles after President Trump says its CEO must resign Intel announces more job cuts and drops projects in Europe in plan to save the company US government as biggest shareholder The US government's negotiations to become a major Intel shareholder are coming on the heels of a $2 billion (€1.7bn) investment Japanese technology giant SoftBank Group, disclosed late on Monday. SoftBank is accumulating its 2% stake in Intel at $23 (€19.70) per share — a slight discount from the stock's price when its investment was announced. Intel's shares surged nearly 7% to close at $25.31 (€21.74) on the news of SoftBank's big bet on Intel, coupled with Trump's plans for the company. SoftBank invests in an array of companies that it sees as holding long-term potential. It has been stepping up investments in the United States since Trump returned to the White House. In February, its chairman Masayoshi Son joined Trump, Sam Altman of OpenAI and Larry Ellison of Oracle in announcing a major investment of up to $500bn (€429.38bn) in a project to develop specific artificial intelligence infrastructure for OpenAI called Stargate. 'Semiconductors are the foundation of every industry," Son said in a statement. 'This strategic investment reflects our belief that advanced semiconductor manufacturing and supply will further expand in the United States, with Intel playing a critical role.' Trump's interest in Intel is also being driven by his desire to boost chip production in the US, which has been a focal point of the trade war that he has been waging throughout the world since he returned to the White House earlier this year for his second term in office. 'We want Intel to be successful in America,' Lutnick said during his CNBC interview. Intel is valued at about $110bn (€94.4bn), meaning a 10% government stake would equate to roughly $11bn (€9.44bn) at current prices. Other major shareholders include Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street. A 10% US government stake would almost certainly vault Washington ahead of Vanguard as Intel's largest single shareholder, unless structured as non-voting shares outside the normal count.

PayPal, Mesh jump into crypto conversion

This story was originally published on Payments Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Payments Dive newsletter. The proliferation of digital currencies presents their users an important task: How to convert one to another and into stablecoins. Mesh, a startup building a digital assets payments network, joins a field of firms offering a solution. PayPal Holdings is using Mesh's technology to power a new pay-with-crypto conversion tool to connect dozens of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins for shoppers and merchants. The capability will be rolled out in the U.S. in time for the 2025 holiday shopping season, a PayPal spokesperson said Wednesday in an email. PayPal and Mesh, a startup in which PayPal's venture arm has invested, touting savings for merchants below current international credit card conversion costs, in a July 28 press release announcing the new tool. 'You need to bridge the gap between what users have and what the merchant's supposed to receive,' Mesh CEO Bam Azizi said in an Aug. 13 interview. The technology allows merchants to accept more than eight dozen flavors of crypto for payment, converting them into fiat. In the future, PayPal said it will let merchants settle with its PYUSD stablecoin, launched two years ago. Stablecoins 'are not made equal,' Azizi said. 'So if you have USDC and the merchant wants USDT, you still need to convert it as an end user. That's not the most optimal way for users to pay for things.' (USDC is Circle Internet Group's stablecoin while Tether issues USDT.) For example, if numerous customers held Tether USDT and a seller wants another stablecoin, 'they just simply click and pay, and we abstract all the complexity' of the transaction for a shopper and the conversion for a merchant, Azizi explained. Stablecoins are typically pegged to a fiat currency such as the euro or U.S. dollar, making their value more stable than other digital assets like Bitcoin that frequently surge and decline. San Francisco-based Mesh is building a payments network to connect crypto exchanges, digital wallets and financial services platforms to simplify digital currency payments and conversions. The company has about 100 employees. 'Don't forget that we have 650 million crypto owners (globally) and they have all sorts of assets, whether it's NFT (non-fungible tokens) or tokenized real estate or collectibles or Bitcoin, Ethereum – you cannot ignore that population,' Azizi said. 'They're not going anywhere.' The U.S. Genius Act, signed into law last month, has triggered a corporate race towards stablecoins and lofty IPO valuations for stablecoin companies such as Circle and Bullish. Companies from Amazon to Bank of America, Expedia Group and Walmart are mulling whether to issue stablecoins. President Donald Trump's election last year, along with the rise of a contingent of Congress members receptive to the cryptocurrency industry, has given the industry new momentum after years of chafing under strict crypto regulation by the Biden administration. As stablecoins enter the financial mainstream, Azizi sees a future in which they dominate digital payments while their more volatile crypto cousins — such as Bitcoin, Dogecoin and Shiba Inu — remain largely the domain of investors. 'The killer app for stablecoin is going to be payment, whether it's cross border payment, B2B payment or [a] payout,' said Azizi, who co-founded Mesh five years ago. The company said last week it has raised about $130 million, including from PayPal Ventures, Coinbase Ventures and Kingsway Capital. The creation of more on-and-off ramps for crypto-fiat conversion will also further stablecoin adoption, he said. Mesh faces competition from companies such as Bastion, Binance, Stripe-owned Bridge and Coinbase to provide crypto users pathways for exchanging coins and fiat. 'Stablecoin is going to be what crypto wanted to be, what Bitcoin wanted to be: Peer-to-peer payment without any centralized authority sitting in the middle,' Azizi said. 'Stablecoin has all the beauty, all the upside of crypto and blockchain networks, and none of the downside. It's not volatile. Some people might like volatility for investment reasons … but it's not the best way to pay.' Recommended Reading What role do stablecoins play in the payments industry?
