Frank on Thiago return, European 'dream' and being 'selling club'

BBC News08-05-2025

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Ipswich Town (kick-off 15:00 BST).Here are the key lines from his news conference:Frank confirmed that "everyone who was ready for Manchester United is available again", including Igor Thiago who they were "pleased" to get back out on the pitch. On the forward's return: "Igor is over the worst part and getting into training - now it's just about giving him the right load like with any player, whether it's a joint infection, hamstring or an ankle. Now he just needs to be fit enough to compete. We pushed him a bit hard to be available for the squad because we needed him. He will not start, but he had a good week of training this week."On Aaron Hickey's fitness after featuring for the under-21s on Monday: "He is getting closer. He's short of being in the next squad but hopefully he can be involved in one of the last two games. Let's see. It's about building him correctly."Frank would like to keep Bryan Mbeumo as he wants "the best players to stay at the club", but acknowledged that Brentford are "a selling club". However, he said other clubs will need "a lot of money" to buy a player like him or fellow attacker Yoane Wissa. On the race for European positions: "It is a unique group of players. They are a driven and ambitious group but we all need a little extra help sometimes. To qualify for Europe is not in our hands. There are other factors that need to fall into place. We hope and we dream, but if we finish in the top 10, it would be a remarkable achievement."On being an established Premier League side and no longer just a "bus stop in Hounslow": "In our heart we may still be a bus stop in Hounslow, but we always need to remember that and have that inside of us because that keeps us grounded and humble. We always dream and want more, but always remember who we are."The Brentford boss sees the trip to Portman Road "as potentially the most difficult of the three" remaining matches as Ipswich "have been competitive in every game". Frank knows his side "need to be absolutely up for it" but is confident they will be ready.Follow the rest of the day's football news on our live page

England v West Indies: third women's cricket ODI

Update: Date: 2025-06-07T09:23:41.000Z Title: Preamble Content: Good morning! After a whirlwind few weeks, it all comes to an end today at Taunton, for the third and final ODI and the last match of this white-ball series against West Indies. If England win today, they will be undefeated this summer, and the margins of victory - by over a hundred runs in the ODIs and T20 wins by eight and nine wickets, and 17 runs - show the gulf between the two sides. England are bouncing – the collegiate captaincy of NSB working well, and some tasty performances from top – Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones – to bottom - Lauren Filer and Lindsey Smith. But there have been some bright sparks for West Indies too – not the least the sparkling half century by debutant pocket rocket Realeanna Grimmand in the last game. Play starts at 11am, do join us.

Thomas Frank's stance on leaving Brentford as Spurs make him top manager target

Thomas Frank is among the frontrunners to become the next Tottenham manager after they sacked Ange Postecoglou - and the Brentford boss has made his feelings clear about moving on Brentford boss Thomas Frank has previously claimed he has "one of the best jobs in football" with Tottenham considering an approach to make the Dane their new manager. The north London side sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday despite the Australian ending their 17-year wait for a trophy. Europa League success though wasn't enough to see him keep his job and Daniel Levy showed him the door after a poor Premier League season. ‌ Attention has turned to his successor - which could well be Frank with Tottenham bosses keen. He has two years left on his contract however as well as a big buy-out clause written into the deal which he signed back in December 2022. ‌ Since Frank was appointed at the Bees he's led them to promotion from the Championship and been able to establish them as a top flight side. All that despite him losing his top talent as Brentford continue to cash in on their leading lights for major profits. Despite that the Brentford boss believes he's blessed to be in charge at the Gtech Community Stadium, hailing the environment he'd worked in. He previously told Sky Sports: "I may be in one of the best football jobs in the world. I mean that because the work environment is so good, the owner is so good, it's such a good environment. Everything is top. Do you want to try something different in the future? That's the thing. Maybe, but it's not like I need to try something bigger or better. Because what is better? I'm definitely very ambitious and I think I can achieve everything I want to with Brentford." Frank has enjoyed huge continuity and loyalty from the Bees. Even during periods where results have gone against them the club's bosses has kept faith with their man in the dugout. Tottenham and Levy have proved to be a much more ruthless environment. The club are eyeing another new manager with Postecoglou, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte shown the door in recent years. Both Nuno and Conte have gone on to enjoy success since. Jose Mourinho was famously sacked before a cup final and Tottenham have shown that even trophies will not supersede league form by sacking the former Celtic boss - a move which has proved hugely divisive.
