Man Group's half-year profit slumps even as assets under management hit record $193 billion
The company's shares fell by as much as 5.75% at the market open, before reversing track to stand more or less steady on the day.
Hedge fund returns so far this year show a stark divide between those that have been able to navigate U.S. President Donald Trump's erratic decision-making and switch tactics quickly and those hemmed in by algorithmic strategies.
"During a particularly volatile first half of 2025, we delivered positive investment performance overall and achieved net inflows of $17.6 billion," said Robyn Grew, CEO of Man Group, which runs funds spanning a range of strategies.
Net inflows surged 1,855% in the twelve months to June 30, driven by the hedge fund's long-only products betting on rising asset values, it said in a statement.
The bulk of the new client money came from one customer who invested $13 billion in the hedge fund's systematic strategy, Numeric, chief financial officer Antoine Forterre confirmed to Reuters in a phone call.
The company also saw inflows into its credit strategies, where it runs roughly $43 billion, he added.
Man reported a six-month core profit before tax collected from management and performance fees of $146 million, down 43% from $257 million in June last year.
Systematic hedge funds, where algorithms ride market trends until they peter out, are down roughly 10% so far this year to the end of June, according to Societe Generale.
"It proved to be one of the most challenging periods for trend-following strategies in 25 years," CEO Grew said in the statement.
Man Group confirmed it had recently let go of two high-profile executives while promoting others, in order to streamline operations, part of a programme launched by Grew when she became the company's first female CEO in 2023.
Grew told Reuters the restructuring at Man Group would "reduce friction" in the organisation and confirmed that its two flagship systematic strategies, Numeric and AHL, though still separate, would be managed under one roof.

LONDON, Aug 7 (Reuters) - British house prices rose by the most in six months in July when they increased by a slightly faster than expected 0.4% from June, according to figures from mortgage lender Halifax that add to signs of a stabilisation in the housing market. "We expect house prices to follow a steady path of modest gains through the rest of the year," she said. The Bank of England is widely expected to cut its main interest rate to 4% from 4.25% later on Thursday but the outlook for further reductions in borrowing costs is unclear due to persistent inflation pressures, even as the jobs market cools. Rival lender Nationwide said last week its measure of house prices rose by 0.6% in July compared with June.

Toyota reports a 37% drop in profit, cuts its forecast due to Trump's tariffs
Toyota 's profit plunged 37% in the April-June quarter, the company said Thursday, cutting its full year earnings forecasts largely because of President Donald Trump's tariffs. The Japanese automaker said it based its report on the assumption that Trump's tariffs on exports from Japan, including autos, would be 12.5% starting this month. As of now they stand at 15%. The world's top automaker also makes vehicles in Mexico and Canada. Toyota's profit in the last quarter totaled 841 billion yen, or $5.7 billion, down from 1.33 trillion yen in the same period the year before. Its quarterly sales rose 3%. The status of those exports is unclear since Mexico and Canada are beneficiaries of the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement, renegotiated from a 1990s pact during Trump's first term in office, that eliminated most tariffs and trade barriers between the three countries. Toyota Motor Corp.'s April-June profit totaled 841 billion yen ($5.7 billion), down from 1.33 trillion yen in the same period of 2024. Quarterly sales rose 3% to 12 trillion yen ($82 billion). Toyota said the tariffs cost its quarterly operating profit 450 billion yen ($3 billion). Cost reduction efforts and the negative impact of an unfavorable exchange rate also hurt its bottom line. The company, which makes the Camry sedan and Lexus luxury models, forecast a 2.66 trillion yen ($18 billion) profit for the full fiscal year ending in March 2026, down from an earlier forecast for a 3.1 trillion yen ($21 billion) profit. Toyota earned nearly 4.8 trillion yen in the previous fiscal year. 'Despite a challenging external environment, we have continued to make comprehensive investments, as well as improvements such as increased unit sales, cost reductions and expanded value chain profits,' Toyota said in a statement that outlined its efforts to minimize the impact of the tariffs. At the retail level, Toyota sold 2.4 million vehicles globally, with sales growing in Japan, North America and Europe from the previous year, when global retail totaled 2.2 million vehicles.
