The nurse's lawyer, Subhash Chandran, said that efforts are underway to save her life through the intervention of an influential Sunni Muslim cleric
A top Sunni Muslim cleric has joined the efforts to convince the victim's family to accept blood money, the only legal route left to save the life of Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya, whose execution date has been set for July 16.
Priya, a native of Kerala, is reportedly on death row at the Central prison in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, for the alleged murder of her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in 2017.
The nurse's lawyer, Subhash Chandran, said that efforts are underway to save her life through the intervention of influential Sunni Muslim cleric Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar.
He added that through Musliyar, who holds the title of Grand Mufti of India and known as Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, they have reached out to one of the family members, as well as some local authorities and religious leaders.
'We are trying our best so that the family accepts the blood money and the Kerala nurse is spared from death row," Chandran told TNIE.
As part of the final negotiations, Musliyar has personally reached out to the victim's family and is making 'all possible efforts" to initiate a process of reconciliation.
He has reportedly engaged in discussions with religious leaders in Yemen, who are themselves in communication with the victim's family, according to reports.
Attorney General R Venkataramani told the bench that, given the sensitive situation and the conditions in Yemen, the government's ability to intervene is limited.
According to reports, Priya has been working as a medical professional in prison, providing care to other inmates.
Nimisha Priya Case
She had moved to Yemen in 2008 to support her parents financially. After gaining experience in various hospitals, she eventually opened her own clinic.
In line with Yemeni laws requiring foreign nationals to have a local partner for business ventures, the 37-year-old entered into a partnership with a Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mehdi, who allegedly subjected her to ongoing harassment.
Mehdi had reportedly taken possession of her passport. In 2017, Priya administered sedatives to him, intending to recover the passport while he was unconscious. However, Mehdi died, and Priya was arrested while trying to leave the country.

Chhattisgarh deports 30 undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants

RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh on Tuesday deported 30 Bangladeshi nationals following an ongoing verification exercise in the state, with the individuals being sent back to their homeland. The undocumented Bangladeshi migrants were taken by flight to Guwahati, where they will be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF), a police officer said. After initiating the necessary action and completing the process of deportation, all illegal immigrants will be sent across the border into the neighbouring country. The thirty immigrants found staying 'without valid documents' were traced from the districts of Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon and Raigarh. They were apprehended following intelligence inputs and some complaints received from local inhabitants about the foreigners staying illegally. According to a senior intelligence officer, some Bangladeshis had even procured Indian passports in Chhattisgarh, travelled to their country, and returned to the state. On Tuesday, the issue of Bangladeshi and Rohingya undocumented immigrants was raised by senior BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar in the House, claiming that their strength is consistently on the rise in different districts of the state. Chandrakar claimed that illegal immigrants are accessing the benefits of government schemes after they secured documents illegally on the basis of 'false documentation' and the official machinery failing to enforce stringent regulations.

2 more trawlers with 34 Kakdwip fishermen in Bangladesh net

1 2 3 Kolkata: Thirty-four fishermen from Kakdwip in two fishing trawlers were allegedly detained by the Bangladesh Navy in the early hours of Monday for allegedly crossing into Bangladeshi waters while fishing in the Bay of Bengal. According to sources, the two trawlers — FV Jhor and FV Mangalchandi — were intercepted about 77 nautical miles from the Fairway Buoy of Mongla Port in Bangladesh. Bangladesh media reported that a Bangladesh Navy patrol vessel spotted the trawlers fishing within their exclusive economic zone and detained the crew along with the boats and fishing equipment. The fishermen are being held in Mongla, where legal proceedings have begun under Bangladesh's fisheries and maritime departments. "They may have accidentally crossed the boundary due to natural calamity. I have asked fishermen's organisations for detailed information," said Kakdwip MLA Monturam Pakhira. "Whatever the reason be, we are informing our CM," he said. Army Vehicles Open Fire In Taipei As Taiwan Prepares To Face Chinese Threat

Last Updated: Taiwan's military drill in Greater Taipei shut down Wanban Bridge to simulate blocking Chinese forces, showcasing rapid response with multi-tiered barricades. Taiwan's armed forces shut down a key bridge in Greater Taipei on Tuesday as part of a military drill simulating efforts to block Chinese forces from advancing toward the capital, Central News Agency (CNA) said in a report. A similar video was posted by Jaime Ocon, a defence reporter for TaiwanPlus News and a fellow of the Taiwan Security Monitor . The video showed military vehicles and tanks firing their guns and taking gunshots from Taiwanese infantrymen who were seen defending key entrances into the capital. It is unclear if the CNA report and the video tweeted by the journalist Jamie Ocon are of the same drill and News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the report. The Wanban Bridge, connecting New Taipei's Banqiao District to Taipei's Wanhua District, was closed from 11 pm Monday to 6 am Tuesday to allow troops to conduct the exercise. Within two hours, soldiers built a four-layer blockade across the 690-meter bridge, showcasing Taiwan's rapid response capabilities against a potential Chinese ground incursion. The drill simulated a scenario in which People's Liberation Army (PLA) units, disguised in civilian vehicles, attempted to breach the bridge. Taiwan sees these tactics as consistent with China's 'gray zone" warfare methods aimed at blurring the line between peace and conflict. Military police deployed drones for surveillance before staging a defensive firefight. In the simulation, PLA forces broke through three of the four barricade layers before being stopped by Taiwanese snipers and Clouded Leopard armoured vehicles. The exercise ended with a full clearance of the bridge and spot checks on vehicles. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence said the drill is part of a larger push to bolster urban warfare readiness and protect key government and infrastructure sites, including the Presidential Office Building in Taipei. Tuesday marked the seventh day of Taiwan's Han Kuang exercises, the longest-ever live-fire phase of the annual military drill, which runs until July 18. The extended duration of this year's exercise, which were double that of previous years, indicates towards Taiwan's heightened urgency amid China's increasing military pressure. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
