Passengers miss connection train; Southern Railway to pay Rs 10k compensation
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Southern Railway has been directed to pay Rs 10,000 compensation each to five Mookambika-bound travellers who missed the connection train from Mangalore due to the delayed arrival of the first train.
The Thiruvananthapuram District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission also asked the railways to pay Rs 2,500 as costs. The complainants had booked tickets in the Maveli Express from Trivandrum Central Railway Station to Mangalore Central Railway Station to visit the Kollur Mookambika Temple.
The scheduled boarding date was 10.08.2017 and arrival time at 8.05 hours next day. They also booked tickets on the Mangalore-Karwar Express to travel to Byndoor Station (Mookambika Road).
The second train was scheduled to depart from Mangalore station on 11.08.2017 at 9 hours. According to the complainants, the Maveli Express reached the Mangalore Central Railway Station's outer at 8.20 hrs but was stopped there till the connection train in which they had to travel to Byndoor railway station left the central station. The complainants alleged that the train was halted in the outer though the central station had vacant platforms.
Due to deficiency in service by the railways, the complainants said, they had to catch a bus for further journey resulting in monetary loss and mental agony.
The railways submitted that the Maveli Express reached Mangalore station at 9.08 hrs. The allegation that Mangalore- Karwar Express is a connection train for Maveli Express is factually incorrect. Hence, the latter cannot be detained at the station until the arrival of Maveli Express. The Mangalore- Karwar Express left station at scheduled time of 9 hrs.

Innovative Tunnel Technology The Kasara Ghat Tunnel is Maharashtra's longest road tunnel and India's fourth-longest, spanning 7.8 kilometres. It features cutting-edge safety and connectivity measures: continuous mobile network coverage via a leaky cable, emergency phones every 150 metres, public address speakers every 30 metres, and a full oxygen supply system. The tunnel is monitored by 26 fire alarm systems and an integrated access control setup with radio communication and CCTV surveillance. A first in India, the tunnel also features an automatic high-pressure water mist fire suppression system, which activates when the temperature crosses 60°C—spraying water to quickly extinguish fires. Construction Journey and Scale Construction of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, also known as the Nagpur–Mumbai Super Communication Expressway, began in 2016. The now-complete expressway features six tunnels, 33 major bridges, 274 minor bridges, and 65 flyovers. The newly opened tunnel section includes twin tubes with viaducts as high as 12.95 metres. Its construction required around 23,000 tonnes of cement and 400 tonnes of steel. Vehicles can pass through the tunnel in just seven minutes—offering substantial time savings for travellers. Faster, Safer, Smarter Travel With the expressway fully operational, travel time between Nagpur and Mumbai has been cut from over sixteen hours to just seven. Built to accommodate speeds of up to 150 km/h, the Samruddhi Mahamarg is the first expressway in India designed for such velocity. Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 7 (ANI): The inaugural ride of the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Katra has drawn praise from passengers, many of whom described the new service as offering 'unmatched convenience,' making travel 'much easier', 'possible and comfortable,' while hailing it as a 'great move by the government' to connect Kashmir with the rest of India. Tourists and locals alike hailed the launch as a historic moment, saying it would not only cut down travel time but also boost tourism and make Kashmir more accessible. Speaking to ANI, Ashok Kumar Khajanchi, a tourist from Bikaner in Rajasthan, shared his experience, 'We came from Bikaner to Mumbai and then to Srinagar. We've visited places like Belgaum, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg. Many had tried to scare us into cancelling our trip, but we were determined. When we heard Vande Bharat was running, we cancelled our taxi to Jammu Tawi, even though we lost Rs 6,000. We booked Vande Bharat tickets at 7 PM and reached Srinagar by 8 PM. Due to my health problems, the train made travel much easier.' Khajanchi, who is recovering from a foot fracture, added, 'The convenience offered by Vande Bharat is unmatched. I had two fractures, so we had to cancel our earlier car and train bookings. But this train made the journey possible and comfortable.' His wife, Manju Khajanchi, also expressed satisfaction with their Kashmir trip. 'We've spent five days in Srinagar. The weather is lovely, and people are welcoming. Whatever you hear in the news is far from reality. It's peaceful and beautiful--just like a paradise,' she said, standing at Srinagar railway station before boarding the train back to Katra. Another traveller highlighted the new service's time-saving aspect: 'Earlier, travelling to Jammu meant taking a flight or a long taxi ride. Now, the Vande Bharat train will make the same journey in nearly the same time as a flight. It's a great move by the government to connect Kashmir with the rest of India.' He added, 'This will benefit not just tourists but also officials and local commuters. Once extended to Jammu in two months, the journey will become even smoother. People from the South who earlier avoided long flights or multiple modes of transport can now come by train.' With the commencement of this route, many believe Kashmir will witness a sharp rise in tourism, as Vande Bharat promises a fast, reliable, and scenic journey through the valley. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, officially connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir via rail. This marks a major milestone in strengthening railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River. Andhra Dy CM Pawan Kalyan to lay foundation for Akhanda Godavari project
VIJAYAWADA: Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and MP Daggubati Purandeswari will lay the foundation stone for the ambitious Akhanda Godavari tourism project, which has received Central support, Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh said. The Rs 97 crore project, sanctioned under the SASCI-2024-25 (Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment) scheme, aims to transform Rajamahendravaram, Dowleswaram, Kadiyam, Kovvur and Nidadavolu into vibrant cultural and spiritual tourism hubs, he said. Durgesh said the development works will be completed ahead of the upcoming Godavari Pushkaralu, enhancing both infrastructure and visitor experience. The development proposals include the modernisation of the 127-year-old Havelock Bridge with attractions like waterfalls, a glass bridge, gaming zones, a space theme park, a hologram zoo, a time-travel experience, a rail museum, and aquarium tunnels. Adjacent Pushkar Ghat will be developed into a spiritual destination, integrating it with Havelock Bridge, and nearby temples for year-round spiritual tourism. Historical and cultural sites along the river will be restored to reflect their former glory, he explained.
