Legendary trainer Peter Easterby dies at age of 95
A member of one of the most famous racing families in Yorkshire, he trained with great success on the Flat and over jumps before retiring in 1996.
He was succeeded by his son, Tim, while his brother Mick still shares a licence today with his own son, David, with many other members of the family involved in racing.
Tim Easterby announced on X: 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my father Peter Easterby.
'He passed away peacefully in his own home with his family by his side.
'A true gentleman, legendary racehorse trainer, passionate farmer, lover of country sports and an incredibly proud father and grandfather.'
Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse were both dual Champion Hurdle winners, while Easterby also won two Gold Cups with Alverton in 1979 and Little Owl in 1981.
Proving his versatility, Easterby also sent out Sea Pigeon to win the Ebor off top weight and the Chester Cup twice, while Night Nurse finished second to Little Owl in the Gold Cup, narrowly failing to become the first horse to win the two biggest prizes at the Cheltenham Festival.
Saucy Kit was another Champion Hurdle winner in 1967 for Easterby and for a time his five wins in the race were a record.
His notable Flat triumphs included the Kings's Stand Stakes with Goldhill, the Gimcrack with Sonnen Gold, two Lincolns and three Ayr Gold Cups.
Easterby sent out over 2,500 winners during his lengthy career and Tim Easterby is still based at Habton Grange.

I'm not opposing the short-priced favourite. O'Brien's colt has done little wrong this season, following up his Epsom success with victory, albeit far from impressive, in the Irish equivalent. On ratings he has achieved miles more than most of these, and while some of course are open to improvement he should take all the beating again under Moore. ITALY goes in the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb for colts and geldings. O'Brien surely knows where he is with big rival Distance Storm having sent out the horse who got closest to the unbeaten Godolphin runner at Newmarket 40 days ago. A son of Wootton Bassett, Italy looked very good on debut but ultimately was beaten by Godolphin's Saba Desert in the Group 2 Superlative. That, of course, means Charlie Appleby has a strong guide too! I'm sticking with Italy mainly because he has that bit more experience and I was left thinking he wasn't quite at his best in the Superlative. More Moore. ITV Racing start at York with a handicap over an extended 5f. TREFOR ran an absolute cracker at Windsor the other day suggesting he's bang in form for Charlie Hills. My selection can run off 1lb lower here and his traveling pace should stand him in good stead on this track. He's only run here once before and didn't do well, but on that occasion he hung badly left and just wasn't himself even though the vet found no issues. Kieran Shoemark takes the ride. Finally on telly there is a handicap over an extended 2m. A huge chance this for ALPHONSE LE GRANDE to outstay his rivals for Tony Martin and William Buick. The Cesarewitch winner has not been disgraced in 2025, running twice with a pipe opener at the Curragh follow by an eighth in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting. This is not a strong renewal in my book and he has a great chance to score if there is any sort of pace at all. Good luck! Rachael Blackmore and Frankie Dettori praise Irish teen jockey after debut win
Rachael Blackmore and Frankie Dettori were among those to show their appreciation for an Irish teenage jockey, who tasted victory with his first ever ride. Jamie Martin steered Alaskan View (10/1) to win the Majestic Hotel INH Flat Race at Tramore on Friday, with the pair finishing ahead of the Patrick Mullins-ridden odds-on favourite Highland Realm (2/5). Grand National and Gold Cup winner Blackmore was among those to like a video of Martin's interview with Racing TV after the race on Instagram, with legendary flat jockey Dettori also liking the clip, as did Danny Mullins and Billy Loughnane. The win was all the more special for the 17-year-old as the horse is trained by the his grandfather Willie, owned by his brother and was led up by his father Mick. Many people took to social media to praise the secondary school student for his 'brilliant' post-race interview. One person said: "Well done young fella. Brilliant interview and great winner for ye." Another wrote: "What a great young man! Well done!" Someone else commented: "He's a fantastic fella, delighted for him." One other post read: "This young man deserves every bit of success that comes his way." Speaking after the race, Martin said: "I'm just so grateful to have the likes of my father and grandfather to give me the opportunity. My brother didn't want me on the horse, but my Dad had his way. I thought I was dreaming for a second. "I was talking to a few of the lads inside and I thought I was going to be making it, but there was a bit of competition for the lead and there was three horses upsides for nearly whole first round. I was tanking along so I let Alaskan View off in front. She travelled along beautifully and heard Patrick (Mullins) coming near, but lengthened out unreal. "I thought I was going to fall off near the end but I made it! I looked across and said to Patrick 'Did I win or not?" He added, smiling: "The plan was if I won this I'd retire with a 100 per cent strike rate but I think I'll have to keep on going!"
