Aussie mum wows with beach hack using $3.60 Woolworths item: 'Genius'

Yahoo19-02-2025
Heading to the beach should be a simple thing. Throw a towel, good book, some sunscreen and a bottle of water into a bag, and off you go.
If you have kids on your care, though, this simple packing process becomes way more complicated. Suddenly, you need extra towels, clothes, beach toys, nappies, drink bottles and snacks and whatever else your child has decided they can't leave home without that day. And, if you decide to skimp on the snacks, you'll inevitably find yourself paying top dollar for them once you get oceanside.
While we've yet to find a solution for how much stuff you need for a few hours at the beach with small humans, an Aussie mum-of-two has, at least, discovered a very clever way to avoid spending $60 on a couple of Frosty Fruits once you're there.
"This is such a simple idea, but a bit of a lifesaver over summer," Chantelle Ellem tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
Chantelle's trick is popping a few Zooper Dooper iceblocks into an insulated drink bottle, meaning her friends and family can enjoy a refreshing treat on those hot days on the sand.
"I know that my kids never want to get out of the water, so the temptation of a sweet treat works wonders in getting them out and into the car," she tells us.
The clever mum shared the hack on Facebook, eliciting hundreds of comments from impressed parents who thought the idea was nothing short of genius.

"This is an epic hack! I never would have thought of this," one person wrote.
"What a fantastic idea! I'm a Yeti girl, and have plenty of large ones that would fit," said another.
'Wow, I never thought of this. Genius. Thank you for sharing," a third comment reads.
"I love how much it resonated with people, how excited they were by the trick and all it took was a drink bottle and some Zooper Dooper's from Woolies [which were half-price at $3.60]," says Chantelle.
Revealing how she came across the idea, Chantelle explains that, like most things, it was the power of social media that led her to it.
"Like all things on social media, one day last year I was down a rabbit hole and saw someone in America share that they were putting hot dogs in a thermos, and then another putting treats in a drink bottle," she says. "I quickly grabbed my drink bottle and some Zooper Dooper's from my local Woolies to see if they would fit, and they did - like a glove!"
While Chantelle says she's not tested exactly how long the ice blocks can last in the bottle, she says it can certainly buy you a few hours.
"You can even pop some icy cold water in the bottle around the icy poles to make it last longer. My bottle fits up to 10 icy poles, but if you're heading about with more kids, take another bottle so no one misses out."

According to the mum-of-two, the trick will work with any metal-insulated drink bottle.
If you're looking for even more ways to put that Stanley Cup, Yeti or frank green bottle to work, Chantelle also recommends the popular hot dog hack that originally led her to her ice block experiment.
"Definitely borrow the hack of putting hot dogs into a thermos or drink bottle in hot water, and then creating a quick dinner out," she says. "Just put them into hot dog buns and add tomato sauce. I love an easy dinner out so that you don't have to come home and cook dinner or clean the kitchen. That's a win!"

Qantas launches new flights to tropical Aussie islands near Indonesia

When dreaming of a tropical destination for a weekend escape, most Aussies picture Queensland's sun-drenched coastline or the iconic Great Barrier Reef. But closer to Bali lie several islands that are actually part of Australia; the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island. These island escapes – which boast snorkelling, diving, fishing, national parks and an abundance of wildlife – are now more accessible thanks to a new route launched by Qantas. The airline announced twice-weekly flights from Perth to the Indian Ocean Territories, with an additional Saturday service once a month. The new routes will replace Virgin Australia's former schedule, and are expected to boost visitor numbers to the remote communities. Chair of Christmas Island Tourism, David Watchorn, told Yahoo News that residents were excited about the announcement, as the islands rely heavily on tourism. 'Visitors bring energy and opportunity — creating jobs in accommodation, tours, hospitality, and retail,' he said. 'Unlike mining, which has a clear end date, tourism is renewable and sustainable, growing stronger as more people experience our extraordinary red crab migration, world-class diving, pristine nature, and vibrant culture. 'Tourism isn't just part of the economy — it's the pathway to a stronger, more diverse future for Christmas Island.' The phosphate mining industry has boosted the island's economy for over a century, but it's scheduled to end in 2034, leaving the territory more reliant on visitors than ever. 'This is about more than just flights,' Mr Watchorn said. 'It's about better connections for residents, better access to essential services, and putting the Indian Ocean Territories firmly on the map as a destination.' While the new Qantas schedule won't start until November 3, visitors are able to start booking flights from today, August 18. Flights will depart from Perth's international airport, and fares will include complimentary food and a 30kg baggage allowance. New flight route open between Cairns and Hamilton Island Another Aussie island escape is also welcoming the announcement of a new flight route, with Queensland-based East Air planning on operating a direct flight from Cairns to Hamilton Island. The service will also begin on November 3, and offer three flights a week to begin with, with the possibility of expanding if demand allows. 'This is an ideal opportunity for holidaymakers to maximise their time in Queensland and experience both of these exceptional destinations without additional costly and unnecessary travel and transfers,' East Air CEO Alan Milne said. It will be the first time the route has opened since pre-Covid times. Do you have a story tip? Email: newsroomau@ You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube.

Shonee Bowtell's Survivor: Australia V The World Strategy Changed After Becoming A Mum

When you think of iconic Australian Survivor players, you think of Shonee Bowtell and her signature floral dress. The fashion-forward player has entertained Aussie audiences for years, with over 124 days played across three seasons. Her Spice Girls alliance with winner Liz Parnov and frenemy George Mladenov was a highlight of Australian Survivor: Heroes v Villains, but she's never come away victorious. It's no surprise that Channel 10 tapped her to be on the Australian tribe for Survivor: Australia v The World, but at just nine months postpartum, her decision to join the cast wasn't an easy one. There were multiple stars that aligned for Shonee to compete on Survivor: Australia v The World, and a non-negotiable was to have her partner Matt Jamieson, son Vally, and her mother-in-law fly to Samoa and live nearby. "It was definitely very difficult. But I just thought, when is my partner and baby going to have this one on one bonding time without me there, but they were also in Samoa along with my mother-in-law, so it was peace of mind for me to be like, okay, they're only one hour away from me at all times," Shonee tells Refinery29 Australia. "I don't think I could have done it without — like I couldn't leave the country without them. I'm a bit of a package deal these days." Coming into the game as a new mother also changed her strategy, because stepping away from a young family isn't a sacrifice you want to make if you're not here to win. "I'm like, I need to make this count, because this is time that I'm not going to get back from my family," she says. "So I was definitely thinking, okay... what can I do that's going to set this season apart and really just make the most of my time there? Because [it's] very hard to be away from my family." ' I need to make this count, because this is time that I'm not going to get back from my family. ' Survivor: Australia v The World is only 16 days long, compared to the usual length of 47 to 55 days. This means it's going to be fast, vicious, and that suited Shonee to a tee. "I could not do a full season of [almost] two months. Knowing it was shorter, and then also knowing that because it's shorter, you have no option but to play hard from the get-go," she says. "There's not a lot of downtime... in the full season, sometimes players might sit back because they've got a bucket list that they want to tick off. They want to make it to tribe swap, they want to make it to merge, they want to make it to jury. Whereas, when you've got 16 days and we're all experienced players that have met those milestones before, it's literally crazy from the get go, everyone is making moves." Alliances are a key part of your Survivor game, and Shonee swears she didn't reach out to any past Australian Survivor contestants to get a leg-up before filming started. "There's about five months in the lead-up. But you know, you don't know who the other players are, and I feel like it would be very frowned upon to start scheming right away," she says. "Everyone respects the rules of the game. So when you rock up on the mat, you're really looking at these people for the first time, and that's when the game starts." She was "shocked" to see some of the players in Samoa, and wasn't expecting to see David Genat, Sarah Tilleke or Janine Allis. "I think a lot of people were surprised to see me as well, because you know, I was nine months postpartum, so perhaps they didn't expect that either," she adds. ' I think a lot of people were surprised to see me, because you know, I was nine months postpartum. ' Historically, women can be underestimated on Survivor, or reduced to stereotypes. US Survivor player Parvati Shallow has had her gameplay summarised as "a flirt", when she's a challenge beast and extremely strategic. Just this year, when US host Jeff Probst was asked on the Elvis Duran show about an all-female season of Survivor, he claimed that the majority of the most interesting Survivor characters were men. "I think definitely, women can be underestimated in anything they do," Shonee laughs. "But I think that you know, when it comes to Survivor and endurance challenges, I think the women are so mentally strong that I think we get a great rap on being able to push through really hard challenges. So definitely not underestimated when it comes to that, but perhaps in other aspects." Shonee recently appeared on Parvati's podcast Nice Girls Don't Win, and many fans are hoping for an all-female alliance once we get to merge. She's tight-lipped about whether that will happen, but admits she was stunned seeing US players Parvati and Cirie Fields on the World tribe. "It was actually surreal seeing these amazing American players, because they all have such a good rep in, I guess, amongst the Survivor community and the show. So to actually be like, wow, how flattering that I have been asked to play against these incredible players," Shonee recalls. "I haven't really watched much of American Survivor, but I have seen little snippets. And when I was first going on Survivor, I actually watched some clips on Parvati on YouTube about how she's just so incredible at endurance and how she trains her mind. So yeah, of course I wanted to go on her podcast as well." After seeing how Parvati and Cirie seemed to be a step ahead of everybody on the World tribe during Episode 1, this season is only going to continue to ramp up. Jeff Probst may think strong male personalities dominate US Survivor, but Survivor: Australia v The World is poised to flip the script.

Soap opera legend mourns the death of Tristan Rogers

Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Dozens of stars from the soap opera world are mourning on social media after the death of daytime TV legend Tristan Rogers. Rogers played dashing spy Robert Scorpio on General Hospital for half a century. He died Friday of cancer at the age of 79. "The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers' passing. Tristan has captivated our fans for more than 50 years and Port Charles will not be the same without him (or Robert Scorpio)," the show's executive producer Frank Valenti said in a Facebook statement Friday. "I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time. Tristan was a one-of-a-kind talent and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace." Emma Samms said on X: "I'm incredibly sad to hear the news about Tristan. I loved working with him and we were both so grateful that we got the chance to do that for more than 40 years. "He taught me to be comfortable in front of the cameras and he introduced me to spontaneity and fun even within all the trials and tribulations Robert and Holly endured." Kimberly McCullough posted a photo of her with Rogers, who played the father to her character Robin, when she was a little girl. "Trissy forever," she simply captioned it. John J. York, who played Robert's brother Mac, wrote on X alongside a photo of them together: " will all see you again." Nancy Lee Grahn, who plays Alexis, wrote on Facebook: "Tristan and I had recurring characters on Babylon 5 yrs ago. He told me that standing next to me was the only time he wished he was shorter so that he didn't have to hover over my ginormous head. "When the director asked him to look me in the eyes, he said "I'd love to but that head is too distracting." Suave, wry, smooth, debonair and ridiculously handsome. This GH Aussie Icon left his mark and will be well remembered." Jon Lindstrom, who plays Kevin, said on X: "know the sadness I feel at this news is shared by so many of you. #TristanRogers was one of the coolest, funniest people I ever met. Whenever we were together, which wasn't nearly often enough, we never missed a chance to try to crack the other one up. I wish I'd had more of those chances. R.I.P. #FlightOfAngels #Scorpio @GeneralHospital #GH."
