Nine arrested, four bakkies seized after looting of maize truck
Additionally, four bakkies that were used to load the maize meal were seized.
The police were summoned to the scene where they discovered several community members looting and loading maize into the bakkies.
Following the incident, more vehicles kept arriving at the scene and unlawfully removed the maize cargo.
The Harrismith Public Order Police Unit arrested the nine suspects, aged 30 to 63, in possession of suspected stolen property.
The four bakkies were loaded with maize estimated to be worth R90 000.
Two police officers have been arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe from a liquor store in Harrismith, Free State.
According to a police statement, the police officers visited the liquor store in March 2025 and presented themselves as officials from Bloemfontein.
They claimed that they were conducting an inspection to verify the authenticity of the liquor being sold.
After completing their inspection, the police officers allegedly demanded a R5000 bribe from the liquor store owner.
The owner said that she only had R2 500, which the officers accepted.
The Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit arrested the two suspects, aged 44 and 45 respectively, who are from Bethlehem Public Order Policing Unit.
Captain Loraine Earle confirmed with The South African that the suspects appeared at the Harrismith Magistrate's Court today and their case was postponed to 18 June 2025 for them to apply for bail.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, said that they will continue their fight against crime, even if SAPS members are involved.'
'We will continue to fight corruption relentlessly. If those involved are from within our own ranks, we will not hesitate to take decisive action. No one is above the law, and we remain committed to ensuring accountability and upholding the integrity of the SAPS,' said Motswenyane.

Life sentence for Northern Natal wife-murderer
A man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife - and mother of their four children - after he accused her of cheating on him. The man strangled the woman to death during a quarrel when they were alone at the homestead. The 41-year-old man, who confessed to the July 2024 murder, was sentenced to life behind bars, at the Madadeni Regional Court in Northern KwaZulu-Natal yesterday. The accused believed that his wife had cheated on him. 'The postmortem results were also handed in to the court. The accused was sentenced accordingly, and the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm. 'We remain committed to the fight against the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide,' said Ramkisson-Kara. Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali said it is deeply saddening to witness continued violence perpetrated against women and children across all sectors of society. 'Between January and March 2025 alone, 966 women and 314 children were murdered. In the first quarter of this year, 5,727 people lost their lives to murder and over 24,000 sexual offences were reported and 10,688 reported cases of rape. "These are not mere statistics. They represent shattered lives, broken families, and communities living in trauma. Year after year, the same systemic failures are raised, and year after year, they remain unresolved. South Africa does not lack insight into the root causes and consequences of GBVF; what is missing is decisive leadership and meaningful implementation,' said Monakali. While commemorating Women's Month, Monakali said they remained deeply concerned about the low conviction rate of offenders and the persistently high prevalence of violence against women and children in South Africa. 'We must ask ourselves critical questions: Are we truly winning the fight against GBVF, or are we more concerned with creating the appearance of progress, ticking boxes, and meeting targets on paper while failing survivors in reality? The latter appears to be true.

Gauteng cop and wife charged with kidnapping, extortion of Swiss national
JOHANNESBURG - A Gauteng cop from Tarlton Police Station and his wife have appeared in court for the extortion and kidnapping of a Swiss national diamond dealer. Sergeant John Motladile and his wife, Yvonne, briefly appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates court on Wednesday afternoon. They face charges of kidnapping and extortion relating to a 23-year-old Swiss national who arrived in Joburg last week, to purchase diamonds after seeing an advert on Facebook for the gems. The victim was held against his will at a home in Randfontein last week, where he met with a prospective seller of two uncut diamonds. Motladile interrupted the sale, threatening to arrest the victim should he not pay them more than R200,000. The victim was forced into a marked police van, driven to a popular fast-food outlet and ordered to buy the Motladile and his wife food and drinks. He allegedly paid the Motladile and his wife close to R50,000, but this wasn't enough. Interpol raised the flag after the victim's family contacted authorities for assistance. The victim was released shortly after crime intelligence members made contact with him, scaring Motladile and his wife. The pair were positively identified by the victim on Tuesday and arrested. They will remain in custody before applying for bail next week.
