Renukaswamy murder case: Darshan, other accused kept in separate cells; two more accused sent to jail

The Hindu2 days ago
Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and the other accused, who were re-arrested on Thursday in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case after the Supreme Court cancelled their bail, are being held in the admission barracks in separate cells of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. The Supreme Court had warned of strict action if any special treatment is given to him after the previous episode.
During his earlier stint in the Bengaluru Central Prison last year, a photograph surfaced showing Darshan hobnobbing with rowdy-sheeters Wilson Garden Naga and Srinivas and allegedly getting preferential treatment. The leaked image left prison authorities red-faced and led to Darshan's transfer to Ballari Prison.
Southeast division police headed by DCP Sarah Fathiema are investigating the cases that followed the leaked picture. A source told The Hindu that at they are preparing to file charge sheets in the cases.
Bengaluru city police followed up the development with surprise raids, uncovering multiple irregularities. Subsequently, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) moved the court and secured orders to transfer the rowdy sheeters to other prisons in the State. These individuals had been detained under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act (KCOCA), the harshest law in the Karnataka Police statutes.
Given the history of irregularities at the central prison, officials have now made extensive arrangements to securely house Darshan and his associates.
Two more remanded
Meanwhile, two more accused in the murder case were remanded in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison on Friday. The police produced Jagadeesh alias Jagga (accused number 6) and Anu Kumar alias Anu (accused number 7) before a judge at his residence in southeastern Bengaluru on Friday, after which they were escorted to the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.
S. Girish, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West, who is overseeing the developments, told The Hindu that both were arrested in Chitradurga.
'They have been remanded in judicial custody until August 23 and will be produced before the court again on that date,' Mr. Girish said.
The Supreme Court set aside a Karnataka High Court order granting bail to seven of the 17 accused in the murder of Renukaswamy, a Chitradurga resident. Renukaswamy's body was found near a stormwater drain close to Sumanahalli in west Bengaluru on June 9, 2024. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of 17 people, including Darshan and his friend Pavithra Gowda.
Police filed a charge sheet in September, after which Darshan and six others approached the Karnataka High Court and were granted bail on October 30, 2024. Bengaluru police later petitioned the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of their bail.
On Thursday, the apex court ruled in favour of Bengaluru police, leading to the re-arrest of all the accused. Pavithra was the first to be detained from her residence in RR Nagar, followed by other accused, including Pradosh, Lakshman, and Nagaraj.
Darshan was arrested from his wife's apartment in Hosakerehalli, south Bengaluru, where he had gone to visit his wife and son.

Singapore resident arrested for cheating Siolim woman of Rs 1cr

Panaji: Goa Police on Sunday arrested a probable mastermind, Anil Tripathi, a resident of Singapore, for allegedly cheating a Siolim resident to the tune of Rs 1 crore by impersonating a police inspector of the Delhi crime branch. 'This is the seventh arrest in connection with a digital arrest case of Dec 2024. The probable mastermind was operating from Singapore,' said cybercrime SP Rahul Gupta. The cybercrime police station registered a case based on the complaint of an individual from Marna, Siolim. The complainant said that a person posing to be a Delhi crime branch PI informed her over a call that a police complaint was registered against her. He then sent forged letters in the name of the Supreme Court, and compelled the complainant to transfer a total of Rs 1 crore in different transactions into three separate bank accounts, the complainant said. During the course of investigation, a lookout circular was issued against Tripathi. 'Acting on the lookout circular, Tripathi was detained at the Delhi airport when he arrived in India. A team of cybercrime police then proceeded to Delhi, placed Tripathi under arrest and brought him to Goa on a transit remand,' Gupta said. Tripathi is presently in police custody for five days, Gupta added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Goa police nab mastermind of ₹1 crore digital arrest scam at Delhi airport

The Goa Cyber Crime Police have arrested the alleged mastermind behind a Rs 1 crore "digital arrest" scam, upon his arrival at Delhi airport from Singapore, an officer said on Sunday. He was taken into custody on August 15 and remanded to five days of police custody, according to Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta. The accused Anil Tripathi, a resident of Marina Bay Financial Centre in Singapore, is the seventh person arrested in connection with the case registered in December 2024 at Marna, Siolim (North Goa), said Gupta. The scam involved a fraudster impersonating a Delhi Crime Branch officer on WhatsApp and coercing a woman into believing she was involved in a police case. The accused allegedly sent forged Supreme Court documents and forced the victim to transfer Rs 1 crore through multiple transactions into three different bank accounts, police said. "Tripathi was tracked through technical and financial analysis, as well as the interrogation of previously arrested suspects. A Look Out Circular had been issued, leading to his detention at Delhi airport and subsequent transit to Goa," said Gupta. Investigators claimed that Tripathi is a repeat offender. He was previously arrested in Singapore for a fake tech support scam amounting to USD 64,000, in which he funnelled about USD 15,000 into his Indian bank accounts from a senior Singaporean citizen. The current case is registered under Sections 318, 319(2), and 336(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act. Dog lovers seek relaxations in curtailing strays

Trichy: Dog lovers from People for Animal Trichy chapter conducted a demonstration near Trichy Junction railway station on Sunday to censure the recent Supreme Court's directive urging the Delhi local body authorities to shift stray dogs to shelters. Expressing apprehensions over Tamil Nadu implementing a similar strategy against strays, the protesters said that animal birth control (ABC) and anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) drives are sufficient to reduce the stray dog population. "Just because of a few dog bite incidents, it is not right for us to punish all dogs. Aggressive dogs can be selectively removed from roads and treated by the local body. Locking all street dogs in a shelter is not practical and cannot be a wise move," Ajay Barath, vice president, People for Animals, Trichy said. Holding placards, the protesters, including women, said that people must come forward to adopt community dogs instead of spending on exotic bred dogs. Stating that there are provisions for initiating mercy killing for rabies infected stray dogs, the protesters claimed that restricting the movement of community dogs within a shelter will be like lodging everyone in prison for the criminal offences committed by a few. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Reacting to questions on stray dogs chasing and biting commuters on roads, the protesters claimed that canines cause disruptions only if they were provoked by humans. They also expressed hope that protests organised by dog lovers across the country may tone down the stance of the judiciary in handling stray dogs.
