3 Chargers players on the roster bubble who helped themselves vs. Saints
Following Los Angeles' win on Sunday, here's a look at which roster-bubble players helped their cause:
CB Eric Rogers
Rogers, the undrafted rookie out of Rutgers, made the most of his extensive playing time. With his good instincts, Rogers had two interceptions, including a 43-yard pick-six. He also had a pass breakup in the fourth quarter. There are a handful of players vying for the last spots in the positional room, including Nikko Reed, who was the standout corner in the Hall of Fame Game against the Lions. But if Rogers' injury, which occurred late in the game, is minor, then he will have a couple of weeks to capitalize on his performance.
RB Raheim Sanders
It took a while for Sanders to make his presence known as he dealt with an injury early in the summer. But the undrafted rookie finally got to display what all the hype was about coming out of South Carolina. Sanders led all running backs with 42 rushing yards on 10 carries, including an 11-yard touchdown. He exemplified great vision and patience as a runner. With Najee Harris' return up in the air, the Chargers might be looking for the running mate to Omarion Hampton to start the season, and Sanders made his case on Sunday.
S Kendall Williamson
The chances of the Chargers carrying six safeties seem very low. However, if it comes down to them considering it, Williamson would be the reason why. Following the Hall of Fame Game, where he forced a fumble on the opening kickoff, Williamson continued to make a statement on special teams with his great tackling skills. He leads the Chargers in special teams tackles through the first two preseason games.

Kelsey Plum clarifies crack about Caitlin Clark's team at WNBA All-Star Game: 'I made a bad joke'
The WNBA All-Star Game made headlines last month when every player donned a "Pay Us What You Owe Us" T-shirt before the game in a show of solidarity as CBA negotiations drag on. Then Kelsey Plum generated a little controversy after the game. Speaking to reporters in the wake of a 151-131 win for her Team Collier side, Plum mentioned that "Zero members of Team Clark were very present" for the meeting. She treated it as a joke, laughing with teammate Sabrina Ionescu who sardonically added "That really needed to be mentioned." That comment, however, took on enough of a life of its own that the Los Angeles Sparks star addressed the matter during an appearance on Sue Bird's "Bird's Eye View" podcast published Friday. Bird brought up the matter by describing the comment as a "joke" that "just got twisted," to which Plum agreed. She then conceded it might not have been the best-timed joke given the gravity of the situation, lamenting the backlash's effect on the conversation: "I made a bad joke. I made a really bad joke ... And I should have — like, hindsight's 20/20, because of the shirts, because of the fans — I should have known it was a way more serious moment than a typical All-Star Game, because I went into that press conference very, like, happy-go-lucky we won, you know? Had a great weekend, my family's here, it was just a great time. "The questions came in, and it was like, 'CBA, this, this, this.' Honestly. Birdie, it was like, 'Hey, Team Clark, they didn't make it to the meeting either.' Just making a joke that they were hungover, trying to make the room lighter ... I was making a joke that they were hungover, even though our team nickname was 'hungover.' So I was like, 'At least we made it.' "Obviously, we're all on the same page. We all wore the shirts. Like, we're all unified. I think, if anything, I was just more discouraged because I felt like it took away from the moment of what we were trying to do. You don't even get to respond and if you do, you seem defensive." Plum is among the leaders of the Women's National Basketball Players Association as its first vice president, with only president Nneka Ogwumike ranking ahead of her on the players' side. The union and league are only a few months away from the expiration of the current CBA on Oct. 31. If they can't figure out a new agreement by then, they will be facing a work stoppage that could threaten the 2026 season. Even before breaking out the shirts, the players were openly unhappy with the state of the negotiations, especially with the league about to start bringing in $200 million in annual television money with its new deals. A two-time WNBA champion with the Las Vegas Aces, Plum is in her first season with the Sparks and currently ranks in the top 5 of the league in points, assists and 3-pointers made per game.

Dodgers place Max Muncy on injured list with right oblique strain
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers, mired in a six-week slump and fresh off blowing what was once a nine-game division lead, are now without one of the anchors of their lineup after Max Muncy was placed on the injured list with what manager Dave Roberts called a Grade 1 right oblique strain. Muncy first reported discomfort in his side after a session in the batting cage on Wednesday afternoon, leading the team to scratch him from that afternoon's lineup. Now, with the first-place San Diego Padres in town for the first of six games in a 10-day span, they put Muncy on the shelf for what should drag on longer than that. Advertisement While Roberts said 'I don't think anyone expects it to be season-ending,' there's no clear timeline for when the two-time All-Star third baseman could return to the Dodgers' lineup. It's an ominous development for a group that already cratered when Muncy missed five weeks with a bone bruise in his left knee, ranking 28th in the majors in OPS (.656) and dead last in runs scored (90) in Muncy's absence. Since Muncy's return on Aug. 4, the Dodgers have ranked fourth in baseball with an OPS of .836. The prodigious slugger had taken off offensively this season, as his 144 OPS+ in 347 plate appearances this year would represent his highest full-season mark since his 2018 breakout campaign. Among third basemen with that much playing time this season, Muncy's .880 OPS trails only Boston's Alex Bregman and Cleveland's José Ramírez. 'It's certainly a tough loss,' Roberts said. 'I think it's just, guys got to continue to perform to their abilities. It's hard to kind of backfill Max, what he brings as far as the plate discipline, the slug, the on-base, all that stuff. I feel good about our lineup, the guys that we have, and they've just got to go out there and take good at-bats. That's kind of all we can do right now.' Muncy missed a significant chunk of 2024 with a strained right oblique, a stint that lasted from mid-May to mid-August in part because the injury also included a dislocated rib that required chiropractic intervention. 'From what I hear, it's not as bad as it was last year,' Roberts said. The Dodgers claimed journeyman infielder Buddy Kennedy off waivers Friday to take Muncy's spot on the active roster. Kennedy, on his sixth organization, is expected to split time with rookie infield prospect Alex Freeland at third base in the interim while fellow third base options Kiké Hernández and Tommy Edman remain on the injured list until at least some time in September. Browns Announce Plan For Shedeur Sanders Following Injury
Browns Announce Plan For Shedeur Sanders Following Injury originally appeared on The Spun. Less than a week after his impressive preseason debut, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders suffered an injury in practice. Sanders suffered an oblique strain during throwing drills on Wednesday. Although he stayed on the field for the entirety of joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles, he was just a spectator due to his injury. He's unlikely to suit up for Saturday's preseason game. "Yeah, felt it early, I think warming up and then felt it throughout individual [drills], so took a look at it. If it's a right guard, you can play through that. When it's a quarterback, you kind of need that muscle to throw," Stefanski said, via Pro Football Talk. "So, unfortunately, going to put him down for a little bit here." How long is a "little bit" for the Browns? No one really knows, but Stefanski said they'll be smart with their rookie quarterback. "We'll treat it day-to-day and see how it responds. But, want to be smart because he's a thrower — you can't push that thing." During Cleveland's preseason opener, Sanders completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards with two touchdowns. His performance was so good that fans assumed he'd move up the depth chart. That hasn't been the case though. With Sanders banged up, the Browns are expected to get a closer look at their other rookie quarterback, former Oregon star Dillon Gabriel. "The plan was always to give both of those guys start in the preseason, so we'll see how it shakes out," Stefanski told reporters Wednesday. Kickoff for the Browns-Eagles game is at 1 p.m. ET this Saturday.
