Ian Happ Makes Cubs' History With Multi-Homer Game
The Chicago Cubs' offense has been on fire all season long, and Saturday that continued, led by Ian Happ's two home runs in his first two at-bats.
Happ launched a solo home run in the first inning to open the scoring and gave the Cubs a six-run lead with a three-run blast in the second inning.
Happ has now hit four home runs in his last three games, and has 11 on the season. The Cubs' outfielder now has 161 home runs in his career.
However, Happ's multi-homer game also made Cubs history on Saturday. The nine-year veteran collected his 17th career multi-homer game as a Cub, which moved him past Kris Bryant for 15th all-time in franchise history.
"Really cool," Happ told the Marquee Sports Network. "Just being here and being available and being out there on the field, anytime you're on a list with those guys - names of all-time Cubs greats - it's really cool."
Happ is in his ninth year in the MLB, all coming in Chicago. The veteran outfielder has become a Cubs' fan favorite, and Saturday etched his name further into the franchise's history books.
Bryant played six years with the Cubs from 2015 to 2020 and displayed plenty of power during his time in Chicago. In his five seasons where he played at least 100 games, Bryant averaged over 27 home runs a year and hit better than .280.
Happ and Bryant overlapped for four years with the Cubs from 2017-2020. Over his nine-year career with the Cubs, Happ has been one of the most reliable players.
He's averaged about a .250 BA, .800 OPS, 25 HRs, and 80 RBI per season. Happ is about on pace with his career averages so far in 2025, despite dealing with an injury earlier in the season.
The Cubs outfielder began June with just three home runs, but has hit eight this month as his bat has heated up.
"When you're sitting there middle of May with three homers, definitely frustrated," Happ told Marquee Sports Network. "Just want to do more and want to help more. But I've done this long enough and I have confidence that it's going to show up at some point. Just keep making the right swings."
The Cubs are back in action Sunday to wrap up a three-game set with the Mariners. Happ now has 11 home runs on the season and 161 career long bombs. The next players on the Cubs' all-time home run list are Andre Dawson (174) and Derrek Lee (179).
