Rams players reveal their summer reading lists ahead of 2025 season
ESPN's Tim McManus asked a few NFL players what books they were reading this offseason, including Los Angeles Rams defensive backs Quentin Lake and Ahkello Witherspoon. While their answers weren't as ridiculous as some (Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Leonard Williams is reading "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy), the duo still offered interesting reads for the summer.
Lake is reading two books: "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell and "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene.
"I like ['Outliers'] because it kind of shows you that if you grow up or if you're in a certain type of environment, it can really allow you to thrive," Lake told McManus. "Now, '48 Laws of Power,' I like that book a lot because it gives you rules. Now you don't take it literally, but there are certain things you can look at and it's like, 'Hey, how can I use my position that I'm in right now as an advantage to either elevate myself or get myself out of trouble?'"
Witherspoon, meanwhile, is reading "James" by Percival Everett and "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr.
Lake and Witherspoon will be two of the most important players in the Rams' secondary this season. L.A. didn't add any new pieces to the unit in the offseason so far between the draft and free agency and also didn't acquire Jalen Ramsey in a trade.
Hopefully, the duo will learn enough from their reading to take their games to the next level in 2025.

Urban Meyer Doesn't Hold Back on Deion Sanders' Colorado Culture
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Though he flirted with the idea of joining the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL, Deion Sanders ultimately decided to stay in college, agreeing to a five-year, $54 million contract extension to stay at the University of Colorado. While Sanders has been away from the team for a majority of the offseason and didn't participate in the school's summer football camps due to some unspecified health issues—Sanders himself claimed he'd lost 14 pounds around the NFL draft in April because of it—most expect him to be on the sidelines for the Buffaloes' season opener against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29. Sanders was applauded by many media pundits for the job he did last season, taking a team that went just 4-8 during his first season as head coach and leading them to a 9-4 record and an appearance in the Alamo Bowl, which was just the school's fourth bowl game since 2006. "I got to go backstage and watched them practice," Meyer recently said on the "The Triple Option" podcast. "I see the watches and the cars and all of the flash — it's just not me. But when I saw what went on behind the scenes, there's a culture there. He's tough on them, man. He's demanding of that team. That's what blew my mind." "There's no waste of time," Meyer added. "They went out to work and they left. In between those two hours, it was go time. I've been to other teams' practices where I thought they're wasting time." While some may disagree with Sanders' tactics, there's little arguing he has quickly become one of the top program builders in the NCAA — a clear sign that players are buying into the culture he's building. Colorado had the No. 21-ranked recruiting class and the No. 1-ranked transfer class in the country during his first season in Boulder, and the Buffaloes ranked No. 22 and No. 8, respectively, in those same categories last season, per 247Sports. This year, Sanders landed yet another top-25 recruiting class (24th), headlined by five-star QB Julian Lewis and four-star transfer QB Kaidon Salter.

The two Luis Ortiz pitches that led to MLB's gambling investigation
MLB is investigating Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz after a pair of his pitches received unusual gambling activity, according to a report from ESPN. The betting-integrity firm IC360 flagged two pitches in June and relayed it to sportsbook operators, the outlet reported. The first alert was reportedly triggered by unusual betting action on the first pitch from Ortiz in the bottom of the second against the Mariners on June 15 to be a ball or hit batsman. On June 27, IC360 sent a second alert regarding unusual action on a pitch from Ortiz, this time the first pitch during the top of the third inning against the Cardinals to be a ball or hit batsman. Advertisement Ortiz once again bounced a slider nowhere near the zone. Bets were flagged in Ohio, New York and New Jersey, ESPN added. Ortiz was placed on leave by MLB due to a league gambling investigation hours before he was supposed to take the mound for Cleveland on Thursday. Advertisement The league announced that he was on non-disciplinary paid leave through the All-Star break — games resume July 18 — due to an investigation, though they didn't announce at the time what he was under investigation for. 'The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation,' MLB's statement read. 'The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league's confidential investigative process.' Ortiz adds to a growing list of baseball players that have been tied up in gambling investigations in recent years. Advertisement Last year, Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano was banned by the league for life for betting on Pirates games while he was a member of the team. Cleveland Guardians' Luis L. Ortiz pitches in the first inning of a baseball game against the Cardinals in Cleveland, Friday, June 27, 2025. AP Four other players — A's pitcher Michael Kelly, Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, Padres pitcher Jay Groome and Phillies infielder José Rodríguez — received one-year suspensions for betting on other teams. Ortiz has gone 4-9 with 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts compared to 42 walks spanning 16 starts for the Guardians this season.
