Reconsider rejected Lingga-Banting access road project, rep tells SPA
KUCHING (May 23): Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor (GPS-Lingga) has urged the State Planning Authority (SPA) to reconsider approving the proposed construction of an 11.3-kilometre access road connecting Lingga to Banting.
She noted that the RM86.5 million project, proposed under the Sri Aman Development Agency (SADA) allocation, was previously rejected by SPA due to an existing alternative route through Empelanjau.
'As the elected representative, I am voicing the hopes of the people of Lingga who wish for this road construction proposal to be given due consideration.
'The construction of this road would not only shorten travel distance for Banting residents to Lingga and Sebuyau but also ease their access to government services such as the Lingga District Office and the Health Clinic,' she said while debating the Motion of Appreciation for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.
She added that the road could also serve as a catalyst for local economic growth by improving regional connectivity.
In addressing rural infrastructure concerns, she highlighted the recurring issue of floods affecting agricultural areas in the Maludam sub-district, which have severely impacted crop yields.
'The floods and high tides impact several villages, including Kampung Sungai Maludam, Sungai Melebu, Sungai Mulon, Sungai Daun, Sungai Merantik, Sungai Pedada and Tanjung Baru Maludam,' she said.
Although RM40 million has been allocated by the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) for a flood mitigation project in Maludam, she argued that the funding is insufficient to address both flood prevention and agricultural infrastructure needs.
'Therefore, I appeal to the Sarawak government to consider additional funding for the second phase of the Flood Mitigation Project and the development of agricultural infrastructure in the area under the 13th Malaysia Plan,' she said.
On a separate note, Dayang Noorazah congratulated the State Ministry of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development on the establishment of Sarawak's first One-Stop Early Intervention Centre (OSEIC).
'The encouraging response received shows a pressing need to establish more OSEIC centres across all divisions of the state, especially in Sri Aman Division,' she said.
She further urged that these efforts be expanded to meet the growing demand from parents of special needs children diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome, or learning disabilities. Banting Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor DUN road project

Don't delay on Zara Qairina probe, urges Shafie
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has called for a swift probe and comprehensive action taken on Zara Qairina Mahathir's case. The Semporna MP said that he did not want to accuse any parties, but the authorities need to solve the case immediately. "Please do not delay whatever investigation is involved. Action must be taken and the public must be informed," he said while debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 13). The Warisan president said that there is a "vacuum of speculation" with many allegations out in the public. "If this is not solved, it will get worse," he said. Zara Qairina died a day after she was found lying unconscious below her hostel building at SMA Tun Datu Mustafa in Papar, on July 16. Shafie also said that he had written to the Education Minister regarding the situation of schools in Sabah. "I have listed all the dilapidated schools, some are built using wood, their toilet is not clean and even the teachers' room is not proper. "I don't even want to talk about electricity or lights. "Please go to the ground for God's sake. They are Malaysians and our young generation," said the former Sabah chief minister.

TNB profit and 5G progress in focus at Dewan Rakyat today
KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat sitting today is expected to spotlight Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) annual profit following the recent electricity tariff hike. Progress on Malaysia's 5G network rollout will also be a key discussion point during the session. Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan) will question the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister on TNB's profit surge after the July 1 tariff adjustment. He will also inquire if the 14.2% hike for the commercial sector can be postponed or staggered. TNB reportedly recorded a profit increase of over 70% last year, raising concerns about affordability. Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi will seek updates on the 5G project's latest developments from the Communications Minister. The government's strategy to expand 5G coverage to rural areas will also be addressed. RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) will ask the Transport Minister about measures to prevent accidents like those in Teluk Intan and Gerik. Recent tragedies involved fatalities among Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) officers and UPSI students. Muhammad Islahuddin Abas (PN-Mersing) will question the Higher Education Minister on USIM's teaching hospital relocation from Nilai to Kota Tinggi. The session will later shift to debates on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which began last Monday. So far, 78 MPs have participated in discussions on the RM611 billion development plan. Tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the 13MP focuses on 'Redesigning Development' from 2026 to 2030. The current Dewan Rakyat session will continue until August 28. - Bernama

TNB profit, 5G progress expected to take spotlight in Parliament today
KUALA LUMPUR: The annual profit rate of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) following the electricity tariff hike and progress on the fifth-generation (5G) wireless cellular technology project are expected to take the spotlight in today's Dewan Rakyat sitting. According to the Order Paper on Parliament's official website, Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan), during the oral question-and-answer session, will ask the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister to state TNB's annual profit and the additional profit that can be obtained after the electricity tariff hike for the commercial sector on July 1. He also seeks to know whether the 14.2 per cent increase can be postponed or staggered, in light of TNB's reported profit surge of more than 70 per cent last year. Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi is scheduled to ask the Communications Minister about the latest progress and data on the 5G project, as well as the government's strategy to expand coverage to rural areas. During the same session, RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) is set to ask the Transport Minister about measures taken to prevent tragic accidents such as those in Teluk Intan and Gerik, Perak, which claimed the lives of members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. Muhammad Islahuddin Abas (PN-Mersing) will also ask the Higher Education Minister about the rationale behind relocating Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia's (Usim) teaching hospital from Nilai to Kota Tinggi. After the Q&A session, the sitting will continue with the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which began last Monday and has so far seen participation from 78 MPs. 13MP, themed "Redesigning Development,' was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 31, with RM611bil in investments to be allocated by the government to drive national development from 2026 to 2030.
