Aaron Boone graded his team as 'incomplete' for the first half. Inadequate would be more accurate. Not good enough for sure.
As the Yankee manager is wont to note — and did again Sunday — 'all the hopes and dreams are right there and still exist for us.' Indeed. The Yankees are not the Rockies or White Sox. They have enough talent in a watered-down American League that winning a second straight pennant is no pipe dream.
It also is not happening if the Yankees of the past seven weeks linger. The Yankees, after all, are not judged against the Rockies and White Sox. They are judged against their history, payroll and expectations. And how they have performed, since late May generally and mid-June specifically, will make reaching the playoffs challenging, regardless of how diminished the league might be.
Because the left side of their infield is a disaster. Their rotation and homer-challenged bullpen are both depth challenged. Their homer-dependent offense can score 10 or zero, which is how the Yanks could have the majors' second-best run differential and be so underperforming it.

How a change of scenery turned Andrew Vaughn into a fantasy baseball star

In the original 'Super Mario Bros.' on Nintendo, there was a glitch in World 3-1 where you could gain infinite lives by manipulating a Koopa Shell on a staircase. Those extra lives ultimately helped you extend the game, giving you more chances to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. Andrew Vaughn's performance since early July feels like fantasy managers stumbled upon a glitch that will provide the boost needed to conquer the competition. After four mostly mediocre seasons with the White Sox after being the third played picked in the 2019 draft, Vaughn hit .189 with five homers, 19 RBIs and a .531 OPS in his first 48 games before being dealt to the Brewers, where he was immediately sent to the minors. Graig Nettles glad to be back at Yankees' Old-Timers' Day after 14-year absence

NEW YORK — It had been 14 years since Graig Nettles appeared at Yankee Stadium for Old-Timers' Day, but the club's longtime third baseman returned Saturday in perhaps a sign of improved relations with his former team. Nettles, now 80 and living in Knoxville, Tenn., said he was 'sort of' surprised to get an invitation to be honored Saturday alongside other New York Yankees of yesteryear. Advertisement 'It seemed like the Yankees kind of lost track of me there for about 10 years,' Nettles told The Athletic. 'I'm back. I feel good about being back.' Nettles, who played for the Yankees from 1973 to 1983 and served as the team's captain from 1982-84, said he is unsure why it had been 14 years since his last public appearance at Yankee Stadium. However, he added, 'It didn't bother me.' 'I try not to worry about things I can't control,' Nettles said. 'I don't really have a big opinion at all. I'm having fun playing golf. I don't know who's in charge of (the invitation), but I'm glad they did (extend one).' Debbie Tymon, the Yankees' senior vice president of marketing, oversees the making of the guest list for Old-Timers' Day and is in charge of each year's theme. The Yankees honored their 2000 World Series championship team Saturday for the 25th anniversary of its victory over the New York Mets in the Subway Series. This year also marked the first time since 2019 that the Yankees played the traditional baseball game featuring all-time greats such as Mariano Rivera, Roger Clemens, Jorge Posada, Paul O'Neill and Bernie Williams. Mariano Rivera smokes a single off of Andy Pettitte — Chris Kirschner (@ChrisKirschner) August 9, 2025 Nettles said he still keeps track of the Yankees and watches the team on TV, but he doesn't religiously follow the club day to day. 'They're not playing very good,' Nettles said of the 2025 Yankees. 'I think I was quoted a long time ago, but the Yankees could use a second-base coach. It looks like they could use one now because we've made so many base-running mistakes; maybe if the coaches were out there, he could protect them. I don't know these players very well. I don't know their personalities. But I don't think Billy Martin would have handled it the same way (as manager Aaron Boone). I don't think he would have coddled the players.' Nettles was one of the franchise's greatest third basemen. He still holds the club record for most games played at the position. He's second behind Alex Rodriguez among all Yankees third basemen in home runs, RBIs, wRC+ and fWAR. During his Yankees tenure, Nettles won two World Series championships (1977, 1978), made five All-Star teams, won two Gold Glove Awards and was named the American League Championship Series MVP in 1981. Famously, Nettles was part of the bench-clearing brawl in Game 5 of the 1977 ALCS that involved Hall of Famer George Brett. Advertisement The Yankees traded Nettles to the San Diego Padres before the 1984 season, and the third baseman left the organization on bad terms. Late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner called Nettles a 'has-been' during the 1982 season, and Nettles said it was difficult to concentrate after that. Shortly before he was traded, Nettles wrote a book called 'Balls' with Peter Golenbock that dove into his time with the Yankees, which he referred to as a circus. 'We never seemed to get along too well, because when I came over here, I wanted to play for Ralph Houk,' Nettles said of his relationship with George Steinbrenner. 'I love that guy. Mr. Steinbrenner kept bothering Ralph so much that he quit. That got me off on the wrong foot with George, but I got along fine with him. Before he died, he brought me back here and gave me a job scouting. He was there for me.' The Yankees don't put together their Old-Timers' Day guest list until about six months in advance, but Nettles said he would 'probably' come back if he is invited again. 'Graig is such a historic part of this organization and is one of our best,' Tymon said. (Top photo of Graig Nettles: Wendell Cruz / Imagn Images) Spot the pattern.
