Elina Svitolina ripped bettors for crossing line after Naomi Osaka loss

USA Today5 hours ago
In case it wasn't already clear, bets you make on any sporting event are your responsibility and YOUR responsibility alone. An athlete is not obligated to follow through and will not tailor their performance based on whatever transaction a complete stranger agreed to behind the scenes (not to mention the ethical and legal concerns). And the moment you start venting out your frustrations to an athlete who "let you down," you've lost the plot entirely.
That seems to be what's happened with Elina Svitolina.
After losing to Naomi Osaka in the National Bank Open quarterfinals on Tuesday, the No. 13-ranked tennis player in the world took to her Instagram story to share screenshots of a handful of "shameful" messages from bettors filled with vitriol and anger over her failure at the hands of Osaka. Svitolina included messages that invoked death threats. Some mocked Svitolina's Ukrainian heritage amid the country's ongoing war with Russia. Others made racist comments about her husband, Gaël Monfils, a Black fellow professional tennis player. For obvious sensitivity reasons, I will not link out any of the images here. You can find them in Svitolina's story if you're so inclined.
To say the least, this is not OK. Not at all.
'To all the bettors: I'm a mom before I'm an athlete,' Svitolina wrote in her Instagram story. 'The way you talk to women – to mothers – is SHAMEFUL. If your moms saw your messages, they'd be disgusted.'
Friends, please remember what I'm about to say. Just because you lost a bet over a sports outcome does not mean you get to start harassing the person you think cost you money. Athletes are still, and stay with me here, human beings who deserve common decency like any of us. They're not props.
The only person who costs you money in these kinds of situations is you. The betting buck starts and stops with you. Always.

NYC designer Martha Nolan was an Irish immigrant with an inspiring rags-to-riches story before her untimely death on a Montauk boat

Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra was the classic American rags-to-riches story — an Irish immigrant who started off as a bottle service girl in Soho and muscled her way to a career in fashion design who summered with the rich and famous in the Hamptons. On Tuesday, her career took a tragic detour after she was found dead on a boat at the upscale Montauk Yacht Club — with the circumstances of her final moments still shrouded in mystery. 'We dreamed big together, laughed harder than anyone else could understand and built so much from nothing,' Dylan Grace, who co-owned East x East design with Nolan-O'Slatarra, wrote in a moving tribute on Instagram on Wednesday. 8 Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra was found dead on a boat at the Montauk Yacht Club on Long Island. Fly high girl.' Nolan-O'Slatarra, 33, was found unconscious on a boat docked at the high-end yacht club around midnight Tuesday, and was pronounced dead despite efforts by bystanders to resuscitate her, Suffolk County police said in a press release. An autopsy on her body determined it 'did not show evidence of violence,' cops said. However, police have not ruled out foul play — Suffolk homicide detectives were dispatched to the scene shortly after the body was found. 8 Nolan-O'Slatarra immigrated from Ireland to Manhattan after graduating college in Dublin. Instagram/Dylan Grace 8 Map of where Nolan's body was found at the Montauk Yacht Club. According to local outlet 27east, club members learned of the tragedy when the owner of the boat where the body was found ran down the dock naked shouting, 'Do something!' Two crewmen from a nearby craft dashed to the boat — a 54-foot SeaRay named Ripple — and called 911 before attempting to revive Nolan-O'Slatarra, the outlet said. While Nolan-O'Slatarra's death remains a mystery, her impressive rise in her chosen industry in just a few short years is a matter of public record. Here is the latest on the dead body found on a Montauk Yacht Club boat A blue-eyed beauty, she hailed from the small town of Carlow, just over 50 miles outside of Dublin, she said in an interview last year with the Irish Independent. Studious and driven to succeed, she earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and management from University College in Dublin and went on to earn a master's degree in digital marketing at the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, also in Dublin, in 2014. 'I always knew I wanted to be successful, that I was money driven, business driven, and that fashion is a tough industry and it would be a slow road,' she told the Independent. 8 Nolan-O'Slatarra started the fashion company East x East design in 2021. Instagram/Dylan Grace 8 Nolan-O'Slatarra's business partner Dylan Grace remembered her as somebody who 'built so much from nothing.' Dylan Grace/Instagram At just 26, she was vice president of client experiences for an Irish-based retail marketing agency — and bored with her career, she told the outlet. Looking for more she moved to New York, settling down in the Upper East Side and shortening her name to Martha Nolan for her professional projects. According to a former co-worker, Nolan began her Big Apple experience as a bottle service girl in Soho before graduating to 'other things.' 8 Police found no evidence of violence on the boat where Nolan-O'Slatarra was discovered. Facebook/Martha Nolan 'She was an entrepreneur and [was] always working on something. She knew everybody and everybody knew her,' the former colleague said. 'She had really good clients in the event space and had a genuinely inspiring hustle. 'She knows how to network and talk to people and put herself out there,' they said. 'She used to work in hedge fund tech. The bottle service stuff was supplemental income [to her] full-time job.' In 2021, she launched East x East and a fashion accessories company, Duper. 'I feel I won't be able to work for anyone ever again,' she told the Independent. 'I am good at building brands, that is why people come to me. If you have an idea, I can make it happen. I have so much resources I can lean on to launch and scale brands.' 8 Police have not ruled out foul play in Nolan-O'Slatarra's death. VSCO/marthanolan The companies' success was enough to allow Nolan to spend her summers in the Hamptons, where she was able to mix business with pleasure. Last month, she celebrated a pop-up show at the exclusive Montauk spa and resort, Gurney's. 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic news regarding Martha Nolan and extend our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones,' the spa said in a statement. 'While Martha was not an employee of Gurney's, we were proud to host her East x East pop-up and admire her entrepreneurial spirit and creative vision.' In one bump on the road, Nolan and Grace were sued in 2022 by Out East Accessories, a Manhattan luxury eyeglass outlet, and accused of stealing $34,000 from a company bank account, the entire eyewear inventory, the complaint alleged. The suit also claimed the duo blocked the owners out of their bank account, emails and social media by changing the password. It's unclear if the lawsuit was ever resolved. Miss United States Lindsey Langston accuses Rep. Cory Mills of threatening to publish her nude pics, sex videos

WASHINGTON — The reigning Miss United States is accusing Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) of threatening to make public sex videos and nude pictures of her — and 'harm any men' she went out with in the future — after she ended their relationship earlier this year upon finding out he was seeing another woman. Lindsey Langston, who was crowned in October, reported the shocking sextortion attempt by Mills, 45, to the Columbia (Fla.) County Sheriff's Office July 14, according to a document obtained by The Post. 'Since February 20th of 2025, Cory has contacted Lindsey numerous times on numerous different accounts threatening to release nude images and videos of her, to include recorded videos of her and Cory engaging in sexual acts,' the report stated. 4 Miss United States pageant winner Lindsey Langston alleged the shocking sextortion attempt by Mills, 45, to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office in Florida on July 14. Lindsey Langston / X 'The threats were made when Cory believed Lindsey to have other romantic partners in her life after the breakup.' Langston, 25, provided screenshots of text and Instagram messages from Mills that were later entered into evidence and 'forwarded to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for further review,' according to a spokesman for the sheriff's office. Anthony Sabatini, an attorney who represented Langston briefly and challenged Mills in a 2022 GOP primary, published at least three of the purported messages on X Wednesday, saying they were 'a criminal violation of Florida's sexual extortion statute 836.05—a 2nd degree felony.' 4 'The threats were made when Cory believed Lindsey to have other romantic partners in her life after the breakup,' the police report stated. Columbia County SO 'I can send him a few videos of you as well,' Mills allegedly taunted his ex in one exchange. 'Oh, I still have them.' Mills and Langston, a GOP state committeewoman, had been dating since November 2021 and sharing a house in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., since May 2024 after the congressman claimed he finalized his divorce from estranged wife Rana Al Saadi. But in February 2025, Sarah Raviani, an Iranian-American Republican activist, revealed her 'significant other for over a year' had 'grabbed her, shoved her, and pushed her out of the door' at the same location as Mills' Washington, DC, penthouse apartment, according to a police incident report reviewed by NBC Washington. Raviani — who was left with 'bruises on her arm which appeared fresh,' according to the report filed with the Metropolitan Police Department — declined to press charges and later issued a statement calling the incident 'a personal matter' and added that she was 'severely jet-lagged,' 'had been drinking' and the bruising was 'the result of medical conditions like eczema and activities from my recent trip to Dubai.' 'While the personal matter in question was emotionally charged, there was no physical altercation,' Raviani said. The incident report seen by NBC showed Raviani allowed cops to listen to a recorded phone call in which Mills 'instruct[ed] her to lie about the origin of her bruises' and that he had himself 'admitted [to officers] that the situation escalated from verbal to physical.' 4 Mills and Langston, a GOP state committeewoman, had been dating since November 2021 and sharing a house in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., since May 2024 after the congressman claimed he finalized divorce from his estranged wife. Getty Images Langston confronted Mills after seeing news reports about the dispute with Raviani, but the congressman stressed he 'was not in a romantic relationship' with another woman and argued that 'the press fabricated the story,' according to the sheriff's office report filed last month. 'Lindsey then found a social media account for the other woman and saw photos of her with Cory,' the latest police report noted. Raviani still has a picture of her and Mills posing together from mid-March posted on her Instagram account. Mills was dinged by his landlord last month at the luxury Washington, DC, apartment where the alleged February assault occurred for evading $85,000 in rent — but claimed it was the result of a faulty web payment portal. 4 The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which didn't immediately respond to requests for further records of the incident, is now taking over the investigation into Mills' threatening texts to Langston. Lindsey Langston / X The pad, which enjoys a scenic view of the Potomac River and sits just a short walk from the National Mall, has a hefty $20,833 per month price tag, The Post was unable to locate any divorce filings for Mills or Al Saadi, who cofounded a weapons company in the 2010s that is still based in northern Virginia. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement didn't immediately respond to requests for further records of the incident or investigation. Reps for Mills' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Aaron Plessinger to miss final three rounds of Pro Motocross

Aaron Plessinger will skip the final three rounds of the Pro Motocross season as he continues to heal from an unspecified illness. He originally planned to skip only the Washougal National and then use the two-week hiatus to recover his health. 'Ongoing health issues had affected the 29-year-old prior to missing Round 8 at Washougal, however, despite initial plans to return for Ironman Raceway this Saturday, Plessinger has been recommended by his doctors to take additional time off the bike in order to focus on his recovery,' Red Bull KTM said in a press release. Plessinger's strong start to the season, with two podiums and another pair of top-five finishes in the first four rounds. He finished seventh at Southwick in Round 5 before the health issues developed. He was outside the top 10 at RedBud and then started Moto 1at Spring Creek before pulling off track with fatigue, Plessinger was unable to line up for the second moto there. 'Unfortunately, getting to the bottom of my health issues is taking longer than I had hoped,' Plessinger said. 'My Cortisol levels are still really low and not back to where I was hoping they would be by now, so under my doctor's advice, I'm going to sit out the remainder of the MX series. It's frustrating given I was riding the best I have ridden in my career this season, but going from leading motos to DNFs is not healthy for me and I don't think it's what the fans or my team deserve either. 'I'm getting older and it's just time for me to do some deep-diving into my health and get to the bottom of it. I'm not the first guy to go through it, so I have received a lot of positive feedback and support from my peers, and I will figure this out – it's just something that is taking a bit longer than I had hoped. I'm already missing seeing the fans and my team every weekend, so you better believe I will be back real soon.' Indications are that he will return for the SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX) playoffs, but that was not part of the announcement. Plessinger said he was 'shooting for Charlotte, so I'm kind of excited about that — I don't know, whatever,' Round 1 of the playoffs, in an Instagram post. In that Instagram post, Plessinger ended some internet speculation, saying he has not tested positive for Epstein-Barr Syndrome, had not over-trained, or submitted to an extreme and unhealthy diet. His symptoms began to display as he rode through what he believed to be a simple sinus infection. Plessinger did not state that he knew there was a direct correlation between the infection and his current symptoms. Plessinger's 250 divisional teammates Tom Vialle and Julien Beaumer also skipped Washougal, but they will return to action this week.
