Minor League Wrap: South Bend hangs on to beat River Bandits, 8-6
In a move that has been long-rumored, the Cubs promoted right-hander Will Sanders from Double-A Knoxville to Triple-A Iowa.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were metastasized by the Syracuse Mets, 12-3.
Kenta Maeda continues to struggle as he gave up six runs in the first inning and let the first three batters of the second inning reach on two walks and a single before he was mercifully pulled from the game. Maeda's final line was nine runs on seven hits and three walks over 1+ innings. He struck out two.

Iowa was being no-hit in this game until the bottom of the sixth when center fielder Kevin Alcántara and left fielder Greg Allen had back-to-back singles. Alcántara's single drove in two and Allen's plated one more.

Knoxville Smokies
The Knoxville Smokies split a doubleheader with the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), winning game one 1-0 and losing the second game 2-0.
Grant Kipp pitched six scoreless innings in game one, picking up the win. Kipp gave up six hits. He walked four, hit one batter and struck out three.
The Smokies had just one hit and no other baserunners. That was enough because it was a solo home run in the second inning by first baseman BJ Murray Jr. It was Murray's eighth home run this season. Murray went 1 for 2.

So the Barons left eight men on and the Smokies never had a man on base.

In game two, Tyler Santana started and took the loss after surrendering two runs on three hits over 2.2 innings. Santana walked two and struck out two.
The Smokies had just three hits in game two. Catcher Pablo Aliendo went 1 for 3 with a double in the bottom of the seventh.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs brought the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals) to justice, 8-6.
Evan Aschenbeck started and got his first High-A win after going six innings and giving up just two runs on seven hits. Aschenbeck controlled the strike zone as he struck out eight River Bandits and walked just one.

Kenyi Perez came in to protect an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth and he walked four of the five batters he faced before getting pulled. The other one hit into a force play at third. So Brayden Riesdorph got called up to get the save with one out and the bases loaded. Riesdorph then walked the first two batters he faced, forcing in two runs and bringing the walk total to the inning to six before getting a sacrifice fly and a ground out to second base to finally put this game away and collect the save.
Right fielder Ivan Brethowr went 2 for 4 with two steals. He scored once and drove in one.
DH Edgar Alvarez was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI single in South Bend's five-run sixth inning.
Shortstop Cristian Hernandez had a two-run single in that sixth inning. Hernandez went 1 for 4 with a walk.

ACL Cubs
Lost to the Giants, 8-2. The ACL Cubs are now 2-16.

Craig Kimbrel is returning to the Atlanta Braves bullpen. The Braves are calling up their former All-Star closer from Triple-A Gwinnett, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported on Thursday. Atlanta officially announced the move on Friday, adding that reliever Daysbel Hernández (2.22 ERA in 25 appearances) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation. Advertisement The decision was likely prompted by the Braves blowing a six-run lead in the ninth inning Thursday versus the Arizona Diamondbacks, leading to an 11-10 loss. Atlanta took a 10-5 lead into the ninth. Three of Arizona's first four batters reached base against Scott Blewett, including home runs by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Alek Thomas. Raisel Iglesias relieved Blewett and didn't fare better, allowing five of the next six batters on base with RBI hits by Ketel Marte, Ildemaro Vargas and Eugenio Suárez resulting in four runs and an Arizona lead. Ultimately, five runs were charged to Blewett and Iglesias gave up the lead with the three he allowed. "We're not a bad team. We're a good team that's playing bad," Braves manager Brian Snitker said after the game. "We're all going to be miserable, and we should. We didn't execute and put the game away, and we've got to do that." With the loss, Atlanta dropped to 27-34, placing them fourth in the National League West and 11 games behind the first-place New York Mets. The Braves are also seven games out of the NL's third wild-card playoff berth. Kimbrel, 37, pitched the first five seasons of his career with the Braves, collecting a 1.43 ERA and 186 saves in 294 appearances. He won the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year award and made four All-Star teams during his stint with Atlanta. The right-hander was traded to the San Diego Padres before the 2015 season and he's played for six other teams since then. Last season, he had a 5.33 ERA for the Orioles in 57 appearances despite a strikeout rate of 12.6 per nine innings and was released in late September. Advertisement However, Kimbrel had a 2.80 ERA, 53 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings and 23 saves before the All-Star break. 'Hopefully, he can replicate what he did the first half of last year,' Snitker said when Atlanta signed Kimbrel in the spring. 'It would be awesome if he could come in and do that." During his 15 MLB seasons, Kimbrel has compiled a 2.59 ERA and 440 saves with a strikeout rate of 14.1 per 9 innings. Blewett's outing was his last for the Braves. Ramirez and Lopez each hit home runs, but Marlins fall at Tampa Bay
Right-hander Zack Littell won in his sixth straight decision, Jonathan Aranda had two RBIs, and the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays edged the visiting Miami Marlins 4-3 on Friday afternoon. Coming off the Rays' first complete game since Ryan Yarbrough in 2021, 647 straight contests ago, Littell (6-5) allowed one run on six hits while striking out four with no walks. Aranda was 2-for-4 and Junior Caminero added two doubles. Taylor Walls (double), Curtis Mead (stolen base) and Matt Thaiss (RBI) had two hits apiece from the bottom of the order. Brandon Lowe scored twice and walked. The Rays improved to 13-3 since May 20 and evened their season series with Miami after four games while climbing to a season-best five games over .500. Kenneth Murray calls Matt Eberflus' defense "a great fit" for him
Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown said he's where he needs to be in his rehab. But Overshown, who tore the ACL, MCL and PCL in his right knee in Week 14, will miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season. The Cowboys covered themselves by trading for Titans linebacker Kenneth Murray, a first-round pick of the Chargers in 2020. Murray is working at Overshown's weakside linebacker spot in new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus' scheme. 'I think it's a great fit,' Murray said, via Clarence Hill of All City DLLS. 'I've been enjoying myself, obviously transitioning over from being traded and getting up to speed and stuff like that. Lot of things work to my strengths, coming down hill, playing the coverage, stuff like that. It's been good. It's been great being here during the offseason program, getting around the guys and just trying to come in and establish a culture and get better every day.' The Cowboys have Murray making the defensive calls over middle linebacker Jack Sanborn, who followed Eberflus from Chicago. 'I'm extremely comfortable with it,' Murray said of being the green dot. 'I've done it the majority of my career, getting us in and out of checks, being able to decipher different things, different formation, stuff like that.' Murray vows to help the Cowboys shore up their run defense. They have not ranked in the top-10 in run defense since 2018 under defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli. In the past five seasons, the Cowboys have not ranked higher than 16th in run defense, including 29th last season. 'I think it's just taking a different approach,' Murray said. 'Obviously, it's a new style coming in, and then, you know, got some new players. That's something that I'll take extremely personally. That that's mentality I'm gonna bring to it. It's personal, man. When they just running it down your throat, it's unacceptable.' Murray had 95 tackles and a career-high 3.5 sacks with Tennessee last season when he started 14 games.
