Minor League Wrap: South Bend hangs on to beat River Bandits, 8-6

In a move that has been long-rumored, the Cubs promoted right-hander Will Sanders from Double-A Knoxville to Triple-A Iowa. Iowa Cubs The Iowa Cubs were metastasized by the Syracuse Mets, 12-3. Kenta Maeda continues to struggle as he gave up six runs in the first inning and let the first three batters of the second inning reach on two walks and a single before he was mercifully pulled from the game. Maeda's final line was nine runs on seven hits and three walks over 1+ innings. He struck out two. Advertisement Iowa was being no-hit in this game until the bottom of the sixth when center fielder Kevin Alcántara and left fielder Greg Allen had back-to-back singles. Alcántara's single drove in two and Allen's plated one more. Alcántara breaks up the no-hitter and the shutout. Knoxville Smokies The Knoxville Smokies split a doubleheader with the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), winning game one 1-0 and losing the second game 2-0. Grant Kipp pitched six scoreless innings in game one, picking up the win. Kipp gave up six hits. He walked four, hit one batter and struck out three. The Smokies had just one hit and no other baserunners. That was enough because it was a solo home run in the second inning by first baseman BJ Murray Jr. It was Murray's eighth home run this season. Murray went 1 for 2. Advertisement So the Barons left eight men on and the Smokies never had a man on base. Murray's home run. In game two, Tyler Santana started and took the loss after surrendering two runs on three hits over 2.2 innings. Santana walked two and struck out two. The Smokies had just three hits in game two. Catcher Pablo Aliendo went 1 for 3 with a double in the bottom of the seventh. South Bend Cubs The South Bend Cubs brought the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals) to justice, 8-6. Evan Aschenbeck started and got his first High-A win after going six innings and giving up just two runs on seven hits. Aschenbeck controlled the strike zone as he struck out eight River Bandits and walked just one. Advertisement Kenyi Perez came in to protect an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth and he walked four of the five batters he faced before getting pulled. The other one hit into a force play at third. So Brayden Riesdorph got called up to get the save with one out and the bases loaded. Riesdorph then walked the first two batters he faced, forcing in two runs and bringing the walk total to the inning to six before getting a sacrifice fly and a ground out to second base to finally put this game away and collect the save. Right fielder Ivan Brethowr went 2 for 4 with two steals. He scored once and drove in one. DH Edgar Alvarez was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI single in South Bend's five-run sixth inning. Shortstop Cristian Hernandez had a two-run single in that sixth inning. Hernandez went 1 for 4 with a walk. Advertisement Myrtle Beach Pelicans Rained out. Doubleheader on Saturday. Cubs Linked to Marlins Ace Sandy Alcantara as Trade Deadline Nears

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Chicago Cubs need starting pitching help at the trade deadline, and there isn't really any way around it. It's only a matter of time before the Cubs make a move to address the rotation, and MLB insider Jeff Passan believes Sandy Alcántara of the Miami Marlins is the best case scenario for Chicago. MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 17: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches against the Tampa Bay Rays in the first inning of the game at loanDepot park on May 17, 2025 in Miami, Florida.... MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 17: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches against the Tampa Bay Rays in the first inning of the game at loanDepot park on May 17, 2025 in Miami, Florida. More"Among Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon, the Cubs have a perfectly OK starting rotation to take into a playoff series," wrote Passan. "Considering the lineups they could face in the NL playoffs -- the Dodgers, Phillies, Mets and Diamondbacks, among others -- OK might not be enough. And that's not to say Alcántara would suddenly morph into a world-beater once he put on a Cubs uniform. He's just the kind of guy on whom teams in need take a risk." Alcántara has been far from perfect this season as he's given up a significant amount of runs. However, his resume speaks for itself. Contenders are going to take a chance on him, and hope a fresh start away from an awful Marlins team will help revive his season. The Cubs have certainly been in the market for starting pitching going back to the offseason. This makes a trade even more likely for Chicago, and Passan added there is some familiar history between the organizations. "The calculus here could change if Valdez or Gallen becomes available, but in terms of pitchers teams know will be available, Alcántara, even a slightly diminished version, is the best," wrote Passan. "With two more years of club control beyond this season, he slots nicely into the front of a rotation that lost Justin Steele to Tommy John surgery. And don't forget: The Cubs had a deal in place for Jesús Luzardo before medicals scuttled it. The teams are very familiar with one another's systems, and that always helps when trying to facilitate a trade." Chicago will certainly need a pitcher like Alcántara if it wishes to compete for a National League pennant or World Series title. Cubs Predicted to Acquire $56 Million Ace to Help Run Away With NL Central

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Chicago Cubs are 33-21 to start the season, leading the National League Central by three games over the St. Louis Cardinals. No team besides the Pittsburgh Pirates is really out of the NL Central race, but the Cubs have the opportunity to really run away with it. The Cubs' rotation has lost Justin Steele for the season, and their starters have a 4.01 ERA this year. The rotation needs help, and BALLCAP Sports' Jim Riley predicted they would trade for Sandy Alcántara of the Miami Marlins. "I think it's the Chicago Cubs," Riley said of which team he thinks will land Alcántara. "The Cubs need to be aggressive and really go for it. This may be the only year they have Kyle Tucker. Now I expect the Cubs to compete for several years down the line, and that's great because you have Sandy for a couple more seasons after this. For this year, being in the position they are at the top of the central, they need to go for more pitching." MIAMI, FLORIDA - AUGUST 03: Pablo Lopez #49 of the Miami Marlins throws water on Sandy Alcantara #22 after he pitched a complete game against the Cincinnati Reds at loanDepot park on August 03, 2022 in Miami, Florida. MoreAlcántara signed a five-year, $56 million contract before the 2022 season. He won the National League Cy Young Award that year, but has struggled to be the same player since. He struggled in 2023 and missed all of last season due to Tommy John surgery. This year, he has an 8.04 ERA and is clearly fighting his command as he works back from missing an entire season. Looking at his current numbers, he is not really worth trading for. However, the Cubs would be banking on the player he has the potential to be. "The guys that are there right now, the young pitchers, you're seeing some good results," Riley said. "Matthew Boyd's been great. (Shōta) Imanaga should be back. I think he's great, but I need to have another top-of-the-rotation arm in this rotation for my October." The Marlins are poised to be sellers. Alcántara is under club control through 2027. That, paired with his resume, could be enough for the Marlins to get a decent return despite his struggles. More MLB: Phillies' Star Leaves Game With Apparent Injury After Dangerous Hit By Pitch

Braves Acquire Rival's Ace In Intradivisional Trade Proposal

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Atlanta Braves began the season abysmally but turned it around at the beginning of May, and are right back in contention to return to October. Entering Friday, the Braves' rotation ranked 22nd in the league in starting pitching ERA, and could use the reinforcements down the stretch. MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 05: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first inning at loanDepot park on May 05, 2025 in Miami, Florida. MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 05: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first inning at loanDepot park on May 05, 2025 in Miami, Florida. Photo byFansided's Nick Halden created a proposal that would bring reinforcements to Atlanta in a trade with the division rival Miami Marlins for ace Sandy Alcántara. The Braves would benefit from the bonus of snatching a pitcher of Alcántara's prestige away from a division rival. Although Alcántara has been struggling in the early months of this season, he is returning from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in 2023, which took all of last season to recover from. Alcántara entered Friday with an 8.42 ERA over seven starts and 23 strikeouts over 31 innings pitched. That's much different from his Cy Young-winning 2022, when he posted a 2.28 ERA over 228 2/3 innings, racking up 207 strikeouts. Alcántara is still the ace of the Miami staff and is looking to turn his season around, and putting a playoff-caliber team like Atlanta around him would certainly do the trick for the 29-year-old. After letting Max Fried walk in the offseason and persistent injuries to Spencer Strider, the Braves are looking to find someone to take the lead on the pitching staff. Under Halden's hypothetical, the Braves would be sending a pair of prospects and a struggling Jarred Kelenic to the Marlins in return for Alcántara. The pair of prospects are no slouches either: former first-round pick and current No. 6 ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline right-hander Owen Murphy, and the Braves' No. 4 prospect infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. That pair alone would be grand enough to net a solid return, and the addition of a former high-ranked prospect in Kelenic eases the Marlins' worries about trading inside the division. Both teams would benefit from this trade, the Braves landing one of the game's best pitchers, although he is struggling, and the Marlins would grab pieces for the future they are building toward. MLB Writer Predicts Red Sox Will Cut Ties With Top Prospect In Huge Trade

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox have a lot of talent this season, but they need to add another starting pitcher to their roster. The top name on the market is likely to be Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara. But how would the Red Sox get a deal like that done? It would likely cost the Red Sox multiple top prospects to bring in the righty, but Alcántara has multiple more years of team control and the potential to return to his Cy Young caliber ability. David Schoenfield of ESPN recently hinted the Red Sox could use top prospect Franklin Arias as a trade chip for Alcántara. Steinbrenner Field on April 15, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. All players are wearing the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson Day. More"Roman Anthony is a nonstarter, but maybe Marcelo Mayer? Trevor Story is still under contract for two more years after all," Schoenfield wrote. "With Mayer, the Marlins could shift Xavier Edwards to second base. If not Mayer, Arias and Cespedes are high-upside young infielders in Single-A ball (Arias is off to a terrific start)." Arias is likely going to be the top prospect traded if the Red Sox end up making a blockbuster deal this season. Boston already has Rafael Devers, Kristian Campbell, Trevor Story, and Alex Bregman in the big leagues. Marcelo Mayer is ready to crack into the big leagues at any moment. This depth leaves Arias as a distant piece in the future of the Red Sox's infield. With so much depth ahead of him, he's expendable, yet valuable to another team in a huge trade like one for Alcántara.
