As free bus travel for women rolls out on Aug. 15, A.P. govt. mulls aid for auto drivers

As the Andhra Pradesh government is all set to roll out the Stree Shakti scheme, offering free bus travel for women in the APSRTC services starting August 15, it is also preparing a new assistance scheme for auto drivers that will combine the Central government programmes with additional State-level benefits. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday directed the officials to conduct a comprehensive study, stressing that livelihood security for key transport sector workers must be a priority alongside new welfare initiatives. The announcement was made during a review meeting at the Secretariat, where Mr. Naidu assessed the final preparations for the Stree Shakti scheme. The Chief Minister, who will formally launch the initiative at Pandit Nehru Bus Station in Vijayawada, emphasised that crowd management, polite conduct, and women's safety must remain top priorities. Efficient management With passenger numbers expected to surge after the scheme launch, Mr. Naidu said that traffic flow must be managed efficiently, bus capacity scaled up, and passengers treated with courtesy. He insisted there should be no inconvenience to commuters and that regular feedback be collected to fine-tune the scheme. The Chief Minister also instructed that some services be provided through a service outsourcing agency to ensure flexibility and efficiency. Facilities He ordered that ePOS machines be equipped with GPS and linked to the State's RTGS system, enabling real-time tracking and faster resolution of issues. Bus stations, he said, must be kept clean and toilets cleaned every two hours under supervision. RO water plants should be installed in all stations, and ongoing repair and painting works, costing ₹30 crore, must be completed by December. New fans and seating should be installed where required, and RTC staff must remain on hand round the clock to assist passengers. To prevent breakdowns, officials confirmed that maintenance checks have been strengthened as additional services will be deployed. Women will be able to travel free of cost in Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, City Ordinary, Express, and Metro Express buses. Software upgrades to enable zero-fare ticket issuance will be completed by August 14, with staff already trained for the rollout.

Vizag station to grow from 8 to 14 platforms under Rs 466 crore upgrade

1 2 Visakhapatnam: The Visakhapatnam railway station will have six more platforms, including island platforms, added to the existing eight platforms. This is part of a major redevelopment project aimed at transforming the station into a world-class transportation hub to ease congestion. Visakhapatnam, one of the three biggest railway stations in the state, will cater to the increasing needs, amenities, and demands of passengers. It will also create a commercial and cultural centre with this 466 crore redevelopment work, which will be completed by 2027. The station will have 14 platforms to handle the growing number of trains and passengers. Initially, authorities planned for two platforms, later increasing the number to four, and now it has reached six as Visakhapatnam has become the headquarters for the newly formed South Coast Railway. Apart from this, there will be yard remodelling works to prevent any hiccups in trains entering and leaving the station. As per the plan, there will be two more lines added to the existing two tracks from Gopalapatnam to Visakhapatnam station, which will reduce congestion and improve operational efficiency. After winning a court case, the redevelopment project gained momentum as the detailed project report was sent to the Railway Board and is awaiting approval. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lara Green Is Retiring - Her Final Jewelry Pieces Are 80% Off Artisan Weekly Read More Undo Meanwhile, authorities have begun levelling works on the Gnanapuram side, where the railways have a large chunk of land. The first phase of the project will focus more on the construction of new platforms. Visakhapatnam station, one of the top 20 stations handling the highest number of passengers in the country, usually accommodates around 50,000 to 60,000 passengers on general days and above 75,000 during festival days. The redevelopment will provide new escalators and an air concourse of 72 metres, which will have a large open space elevated above the tracks. This will serve as a waiting area with seating arrangements for passengers and a point of connection between different parts of the station, including platforms. The DRM of the Waltair Railway, Lalit Bohra, said that a new contractor has taken up the works and it will be completed as per the scheduled time. The Waltair division is constructing fencing on both sides of the tracks from Vizag to Duvvada and Palasa to avoid cattle and sheep on the tracks, allowing trains to run at 160 km/h from the existing 130 km/h.
