HC Mike Elko believes Texas A&M junior DL will 'fulfill his potential' in 2025
Texas A&M's defensive line depth became an immediate talking point early in the offseason, mainly due to the departures of Nic Scourton, Shemar Stewart, and Shemar Turner, who were all selected in the first two rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft. However, after adding five defensive linemen from the transfer portal, including four edge rushers, interior defensive line depth remains an issue, putting pressure on the starting rotation to perform effectively.
On Wednesday night, head coach Mike Elko spoke during the annual Dallas Coach's Night, previewing the 2025 season for what seems like the tenth time this year. Still, it has not yet become redundant, as the second-year leader had plenty to say regarding several players, including junior defensive tackle DJ Hicks.
This is a critical season for the former five-star prospect, who was the crown jewel of Texas A&M's 2023 recruiting class, but has yet to live up to his high school production, mainly due to the depth in front of him during his first two seasons. Still, during his first season as a starting defensive tackle, Hicks recorded just 17 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two pass deflections.
This offseason, Hicks has reportedly worked hard to build more strength in the weight room and work on his technique as a run defender, which, paired with senior nose tackle Albert Regis, needs to reach a level of consistency, as former Iowa State DL Tyler Onyedum is already a proven run defender who also brings notable pass rusher ability to the depth chart.
Despite his lack of production, Elko is very high on DJ Hicks to take that next step and finally live up to his immense potetnial as "the guy" on the D-line.
"I think DJ Hicks is probably that guy who is going to step into that limelight this year and fulfill his potential."
This vote of confidence is a good sign knowing the amount of talent from the transfer portal, as Elko could have named any one of the new additions that have stood out, but remains steady that Hicks will become one of the defense's more reliable defenders. With just one year of eligibility remaining after this season, 2025 needs to be the year that Hicks shines.

Shedeur Sanders cited for speeding twice in June amid Browns QB battle

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders was cited by police on Tuesday morning for driving 101 mph, 40 mph over the speed limit. It turns out that Tuesday's infraction was not his first. According to Medina, Ohio court records Sanders received another citation in June. The first came on June 5 in Brunswick, Ohio where the former Colorado star quarterback was cited for going 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. Browns officials told that Sanders' "is taking care of the tickets." Sanders is squarely in the middle of a hard fought quarterback competition. He has pefermored well during spring practices, but only being a fifth round pick makes any negative feel like it could cost him a chance at playing meaningful football. At a Thursday afternoon charity softball game, Sanders attempted to apologize for his actions admitting, "I've made some wrong choices." The half-hearted apology does not seem like a concerted effort to improve his off field actions, but in the grand scheme of "things"incidents" a speeding ticket is very low on the totem pole. Whether Sanders learns from his two speeding tickets and fully owns up to his mistakes remains to be seen, but any off-field transgression will be under the spotlight considering his name and already highly publicizied first few months in the NFL. Position: Offensive line Advertisement Years played at USC: 2017-2022 Career highlights: It did not take long for Vorhees to earn a starting role at USC, emerging as the Trojans' right guard by the fifth game of his true freshman year in 2017. Outside of the 2019 season—in which he missed all but two games due to an ankle injury—he held down a starting role for the rest of his time on campus. Taking advantage of his extra COVID year of eligibility in 2022, Vorhees emerged as one of the top offensive linemen in the country. He was named a first-team All-American that season, and won the Morris Trophy as the top lineman in the Pac-12 Conference. Vorhees's blocking played an instrumental role in USC quarterback Caleb Williams winning the 2022 Heisman Trophy. After USC: At the 2023 NFL combine, Vorhees tore his ACL during the on-field drills portion of the event. Despite this, however, he still remarkably put up 38 reps on the bench press, drawing national acclaim for his perseverance. Advertisement The Baltimore Ravens selected Vorhees in the 7th round of the 2023 NFL draft. After missing his entire rookie season due to the aforementioned ACL injury, he returned to the field in 2024 and saw significant playing time at offensive guard.
