Buffalo Bills standout running back James Cook has stepped away from the team in the wake of an unresolved contract standoff, which has put his availability for the 2025 NFL season into question.
As reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, James Cook has avoided voluntary workouts and listed his Buffalo residence for sale, showing an expanding disconnect from the franchise. With the Buffalo Bills' mandatory minicamp on June 10–12, the deal hangs as James Cook reaches the final year of his rookie contract.
James Cook's contract negotiations place Buffalo Bills in uncertain waters
James Cook, a central offensive building block for the Buffalo Bills, has not yet attended any offseason sessions, such as OTAs in May and early June.
While his absence is potentially about to have financial penalties attached if he doesn't attend the forthcoming minicamp, tension is building around whether or not James Cook will appear for training camp without a new contract.
'It bears watching because you've got a guy who's unhappy with this contractual situation,' Schefter said. 'I don't think we'll be seeing him in Buffalo anytime soon. Again, the start of training camp will be the next critical moment. If they don't have a deal done there by then, does James Cook show up for training camp? Does he risk the penalties that come along in the collective bargaining agreement if he doesn't show up?'

James Cook is now unsigned after 2025.
According to reports, he's asking for a long-term extension worth in the range of $15 million per year, which would make him one of the league's highest-paid running backs, commensurate with Baltimore's Derrick Henry. As ESPN broadcaster Adam Schefter highlighted James Cook's unhappiness, he also emphasized that no deal is in the offing, with James Cook 'disconnected' from both the organization and the city.
'I don't believe that these two sides are anywhere close to a deal at this point in time,' Adam Schefter added.
'As we enter a critical season for the Buffalo Bills, James Cook is one of the more important players there. And with a deal not on the horizon, that looms as a little storm cloud over the promising season that's ahead for the Buffalo Bills.'
Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has downplayed it publicly, saying in April on The Pat McAfee Show, 'He will be here this year, and hopefully beyond. We're focused on this season, but yes, for 2025 we'll have all three backs.'
Financial punishments will be imminent if Cook misses this week's minicamp, increasing from $17,462 on Day 1 to $52,381 on Day 3, totaling more than $104,000. Additional missed training camp days in July will draw a $50,000 fine per day.
While no official trade negotiations have been reported, the Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders, and Los Angeles Chargers were listed by Pro Football Network recently as possible landing grounds should the impasse continue to escalate.

Kiyan Anthony let his true feelings about being Carmelo Anthony's son known in a candid conversation with the NBA Hall of Famer

Image via: David Dow/NBAE via Getty Images In a heartfelt episode of The Instagram Podcast on YouTube, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony sat down for a rare and personal conversation with his son, Kiyan Anthony. The Syracuse-bound high school star opened up about life on and off the court, offering an unfiltered perspective on what it truly feels like to carry the last name "Anthony. " The discussion, while light-hearted at times, ventured into their personal territory, offering a glimpse into the pressures, expectations, and ambitions that come with being the son of a basketball icon. Kiyan Anthony reacted to the pressure of being Carmelo Anthony's son Kiyan Anthony's response to his father's pointed question about living under the label of 'Melo's son' was as grounded as it was mature. When Carmelo asked, 'A lot of people say you, you know, we have this kind of tag against us, and you especially as Melo's son. How does that make you feel?' — Kiyan candidly responded, sharing his true feelings about the weight of the name he carries. Carmelo and Kiyan | Close Friends Only with Instagram "I don't really got a problem with it to be honest," Kiyan responded. "I feel like anybody would want to be Melo's son. So at the end of the day, I'm my own person. I got to do my own things um on and off the court. So what the people don't see is just on the court just the hard work, the training and all of that. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo And then off the court I feel like we have similar personalities but at the same time we two different people so can't label me as just Melo's son. " While Kiyan is proud of his father and blessed to be Melo's son, he also has the innate desire for individuality. It is a duality that many children of famous athletes often wrestle with, quite similar to Bronny James' inherent tag of being LeBron James' son. Kiyan is aware of the privilege, but he's also focused on carving out his own path, following his father's legacy but creating his own basketball name for himself. The exchange took a thoughtful turn when Kiyan flipped the script and asked his father, 'When you was my age, what was you trying to prove to everybody?' Carmelo's answer was telling of the generational drive. 'That's a good question,' Melo acknowledged quickly. 'When I was your age, I think I was trying to prove that I belong. I wanted to prove to myself, too, like I can do it… I had to prove myself, right?" he added. 'Make smart choices': Pat McAfee warns Pittsburgh Steelers against overreliance on Aaron Rodgers

McAfee warns Pittsburgh Steelers (Image via Getty) Sports analyst and former NFL punter Pat McAfee has voiced concerns over the Pittsburgh Steelers' off-season strategy, suggesting the team may be placing too much trust in a limited offensive setup built around quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver DK Metcalf. Concerns over narrow offensive structure The Steelers have made bold moves this offseason, including the acquisition of DK Metcalf and talks around veteran QB Aaron Rodgers. With Arthur Smith stepping in as offensive coordinator, the team appears to be shifting toward a slow-paced, possession-heavy strategy. While the roster includes stars like TJ Watt, the overall plan has drawn skepticism from analysts. Some believe the system lacks depth and overemphasizes control over adaptability. McAfee is among the first to publicly question whether this formula can hold up in today's aggressive AFC landscape. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee said, "I think they're thinking with one weapon, like DK Metcalf, which they brought in for $132 million, with one quarterback that can maybe operate this offense. And Arthur Smith wants to operate if we can keep TJ Watt, which they're still going to have to figure out." Fans may be hopeful that Rodgers brings experience and leadership, but McAfee pointed out that the Steelers' current blueprint may be too dependent on just a few key figures — a veteran quarterback, a single top-tier receiver, and a run-first system under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. A plan that demands perfection According to McAfee, the team's success now depends on Rodgers playing mistake-free football while managing the game clock and relying heavily on a strong defensive unit. "If Aaron can come in here and move the ball steadily, eat up the clock, make smart choices, not have any turnovers, the Pittsburgh Steelers are dancing in the playoffs yet again and once they get into playoffs, who knows, especially with how good their defense is", he said. Tough test in high-powered AFC McAfee also warned that this tightly structured system might struggle against the fast-paced, high-scoring teams in the AFC, such as the Chiefs, Bengals, and Bills. Without flexibility and depth, the Steelers may find it difficult to keep up. Brad Marchand's wholesome breakfast with NHL Draft prospects Schaefer, Misa, Hagens, and O'Brien steals spotlight before 2025 draft

Marchand serves up mentorship with NHL prospects (Image via: Getty Images) As the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers locked in for a high-stakes Stanley Cup clash, an unexpected moment off the ice quietly stole the spotlight. Brad Marchand—Boston's veteran firestarter—wasn't in the headlines for a goal, but for something far more surprising: breakfast. The 37-year-old shared a casual morning meal with four top NHL Draft prospects. A deeper look at Marchand's surprise sit-down with NHL draft hopefuls It began with a simple, unexpected call. Thirty-seven-year-old Brad Marchand, sporting a casual tee and ballcap, walked into the Florida Panthers' cutting-edge practice facility on a Monday morning. His eyes landed on four quiet NHL draft hopefuls in the dining area. "You guys look good!" he shouted, immediately melting the ice with 2025 NHL Draft top prospects Matthew Schaefer, Michael Misa, James Hagens, and Jake O'Brien. This wasn't some pre-planned media stunt; it was an impromptu breakfast bonding session that swiftly exploded across hockey social media. While the "feel-good" story dominated headlines, a sharper question quickly followed: Was this a truly genuine act of mentorship, or a clever PR play by the NHL? Brad Marchand Used To Be Hated By Some Of His New Panthers Teammates Marchand hasn't exactly been the league's go-to guy for warm fuzzies. For over ten years, the Bruins captain has been known as one of the NHL's most controversial and fiercely competitive figures. The NHL has brought top prospects to the Stanley Cup Final since 1993, and players like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Matthew Tkachuk also met the youngsters that day. But it was Marchand's spontaneous breakfast takeover that completely stole the show—leading some critics to wonder if it was too perfectly timed. For Schaefer, Misa, Hagens, and O'Brien, the experience was absolutely priceless. This wasn't just about meeting famous NHLers; it was an intense, real-world lesson in pro hockey culture, straight from one of its toughest veterans. Genuine or strategically planned, the moment offered a rare peek behind the curtain of life in the big leagues. And maybe that's exactly what the NHL desperately needs. Moments like this, whether carefully crafted or not, genuinely help to humanize its biggest stars and spark dreams in the next wave of talent. Marchand might be polishing his own legacy, but he definitely gets that today's young hopefuls are tomorrow's shining stars.
