Which Indian has the longest gap between fifties in cricket history? No it's not Karun Nair

India's Karun Nair raises his bat after scoring a fifty against England in the fifth Test at The Oval. (PTI) It had been a long wait — 3149 days to be precise — but Karun Nair finally has another fifty-plus score to his name in Test cricket. The right-hander, who once lit up the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai with a remarkable 303 not out against England in December 2016, reached an unbeaten 52 at stumps on Day 1 of the fifth Test on Thursday, marking his first significant score in nearly nine years. This gap between two fifty-plus scores in men's Tests is the second-longest for an Indian batter, since the second World War. The only Indian with a longer drought is Parthiv Patel , who endured 4426 days between his fourth and fifth Test fifties — from 54 against Australia in October 2004 to 67 against England in November 2016. India vs England 5th Test Preview: Can Shubman Gill's India level the series at The Oval? Nair's resilient half-century came after a series of promising, but thrown-away starts during previous matches. It was a major highlight of the opening day's play at The Oval, helping India cross the 200-run mark and stitching a half-century partnership with Washington Sundar, which will resume on day two. This tour marks Nair's return to international cricket after eight years. India's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate hailed Nair's fighting half-century against England. "He started off at six in the first test and then batted at three for the other two tests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Real-Time Conversations in 68 Languages? He is a quality player, particularly for that reason that he can absorb the pressure. So going in today at a different position, again, I thought he summed up the conditions really well. Look, when someone comes back into the test side like he does after a lengthy absence, the pressure is always there, and I think he has handled that very well." In the series, Nair has made 183 runs in four Tests and seven innings at an average of 30.50, with a best score of 52*. His scores in the other three Tests were 0 and 20 in Headingley, 31 and 26 at Edgbaston and 40 and 14 at Lord's. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

IND vs ENG: After denied Test debut in 5th Test, India pacer Arshdeep Singh poses with family in London

Arshdeep Singh (PTI Photo) As India kicked off the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, discussions around team selection once again became a major talking point, not just for those who made it into the playing XI, but also for those left on the sidelines for the entire series. One such name is promising left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh , who despite being in the squad, is yet to make his Test debut. Arshdeep, who was recovering from an injury earlier in the tour, was considered a strong contender for the final Test after regaining match fitness. However, with India opting for Mohammed Siraj , Prasidh Krishna, and debutant Akash Deep as their pace trio, the 26-year-old was left out once again. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. The image quickly gained traction on social media, with fans praising his calm demeanour and patience. Arshdeep wasn't the only one to go unused throughout the series. Kuldeep Yadav and Abhimanyu Easwaran also remained on the bench for all five Tests. Kuldeep's omission, in particular, raised eyebrows given his recent form in red-ball cricket. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Interested in Investing? For Easwaran, it was another frustrating chapter in his stop-start career with the national side. The Bengal batter has often been part of touring squads but continues to await his long-anticipated debut. With India chasing a series-levelling win, the tactical choices are under scrutiny. But for players like Arshdeep, the wait continues — with patience, promise, and perhaps a debut not far away. IND vs ENG: Sunil Gavaskar slams poor Yashasvi Jaiswal - 'There's a bit of uncertainty'

Sunil Gavaskar and Yashasvi Jaiswal (Agency Photos) Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar has raised serious concerns over Yashasvi Jaiswal 's technique following his poor dismissal on Day 1 of the fifth Test at The Oval. The young opener, who began the series on a high with a century, continued his slump in form as he was trapped lbw for just 2 by Gus Atkinson, exposing a now-familiar vulnerability to deliveries angling in from around the wicket. Speaking on Sony Sports, Gavaskar pointed to technical flaws that have crept into Jaiswal's game. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'There's a bit of uncertainty and maybe a lack of confidence creeping into Jaiswal's game. After scoring a hundred in the first Test, he hasn't looked very fluent,' Gavaskar said. He added that the issue lies in the batter's footwork and shoulder positioning, something that's increasingly impacting his ability to counter the inswingers. 'That's possibly why he's not getting his front foot far enough forward to smother this return. But he's a good player. I think if someone sits with him and works on a few technical aspects, like getting his front foot forward and not opening up his shoulder too much, it could help.' Poll Do you think Yashasvi Jaiswal can bounce back from his recent poor form? Yes, he has the talent. No, he's struggling too much. Breaking it down further, Gavaskar explained, 'Right now, his back shoulder is going towards first or second slip, which makes it hard for the bat to come down straight. If his shoulder stayed more towards the wicketkeeper and first slip, the bat would come down straighter.' Jaiswal's early exit left India under pressure after being asked to bat first by England. At stumps on a rain-interrupted day, India were 204 for 6 in 64 overs, with Karun Nair unbeaten on 52 and Washington Sundar on 19. India's top order struggled throughout the day. KL Rahul was bowled by Chris Woakes for 14, while Shubman Gill was run out for 21. India will need a strong lower-order fightback to post a competitive total in the final Test.
