Noor Dubai's programmes benefit 33 million since 2008

Gulf Today27-03-2025
Noor Dubai Foundation, a member of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), continued to make significant strides in its mission to combat preventable blindness and visual impairment in 2024.
According to its annual report, Noor Dubai has improved the lives of over 33 million people across Asia and Africa since its launch in 2008, with flagship health programmes focused on combating visual impairment and strengthening prevention.
In 2024, the Foundation delivered healthcare and treatment services to 3,859,131 (3.8 million) individuals in countries across Asia and Africa—reflecting its deep commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in expanding access to quality healthcare and improving lives.
The report also highlights Noor Dubai's intensified efforts to broaden its impact by implementing integrated health campaigns across multiple countries.
These initiatives include comprehensive eye screenings, specialised surgical procedures, and public awareness campaigns aimed at preventing eye diseases.
Over the past year, Noor Dubai also expanded its digital services by launching telemedicine programmes, enabling individuals in remote areas to access advanced medical consultations.
This digital expansion underscores the Foundation's commitment to harnessing technology to enhance humanitarian outreach.
The Foundation's achievements in 2024 were made possible through sustained efforts and strategic international partnerships with leading health and research institutions.
Going beyond medical intervention, the organisation's work is helping develop resilient, future-ready healthcare systems.
Awadh Seghayer Al Ketbi, Chairman of Noor Dubai Foundation's Board of Trustees, stated that the foundation's 2024 annual report underscores Dubai's leadership in advancing global healthcare, reflecting the values of generosity and giving instilled by Sheikh Mohammed.
This sustainable approach enhances quality of life and empowers communities by ensuring access to comprehensive healthcare services.
Al Ketbi said Noor Dubai operates with a clear vision focused on providing innovative solutions to address preventable blindness.
He highlighted that Noor Dubai's annual report reflects the foundation's significant healthcare and humanitarian impact in 2024.
'Noor Dubai has successfully established a global model through its collaboration with international health organisations and entities dedicated to blindness prevention,' Al Ketbi stated.
'These efforts contribute significantly to the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals and reinforce the UAE's position as a leading and influential force in the global healthcare landscape.'
The report highlighted that Noor Dubai's mobile treatment camps provided comprehensive healthcare services in several countries throughout 2024.
The camps conducted 18,279 medical examinations in the Philippines, performed 2,596 sight-saving surgeries in Nigeria, distributed 4,846 medicines in Pakistan, and provided 3,095 prescription glasses in Bangladesh.
Additionally, a large number of patients in Somalia benefited from medical screenings and treatment services. Since the programme's inception in 2010, the mobile treatment camps have delivered 828,351 medical examinations, conducted 37,320 surgeries, and distributed 85,365 prescription glasses across 19 countries. This makes it one of the world's largest field-based humanitarian initiatives dedicated to combating visual impairments.
The annual report also highlighted the impact of Noor Dubai's Barishal Eye Care Programme in Bangladesh, which conducted 12,500 refractive error screenings in 2024, distributed 1,250 prescription glasses, and provided 6,708 consultations for diabetic retinopathy. Additionally, 144 patients received laser treatment for retinal conditions.
The report underscored Noor Dubai's active role in the global initiative to eliminate trachoma by 2030.
The foundation's efforts contributed to eradicating the disease in 29% of affected areas in Amhara, Ethiopia.
However, the report also cautions that trachoma remains a significant public health threat.

At least 27 Palestinians killed at aid distribution site in southern Gaza

At least 27 people were killed and 180 injured on Saturday when Israeli forces opened near an aid distribution site in Rafah, southern Gaza, the Wafa news agency reported. The deaths come a day after the Israeli military, which has previously accused militants of firing at civilians near aid centres, said it had worked to minimise 'possible friction' between aid seekers and soldiers. It said 'instructions were issued to forces in the field following lessons learnt'. Earlier on Friday, the UN said 798 people had been killed seeking aid between late May and July 7, including 615 in the vicinity of distribution sites operated by the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Another 33 Palestinians died in Israeli attacks across Gaza, Wafa reported. The victims included a mother and her three children in the west of Gaza city, and a couple and their children who were killed in a strike on their tent in Deir Al Balah, Wafa reported. US contractors guarding GHF aid distribution sites in Gaza are firing live ammunition and stun grenades at Palestinians rushing to get food, AP has reported, based on accounts and videos. Despite witness testimonies and Israeli confessions, the GHF denies that Palestinians have been attacked near its sites. Earlier in July, two American contractors said their colleagues regularly used stun grenades, pepper spray and bullets against aid-seekers. 'There are innocent people being hurt. Badly. Needlessly,' one of them said. Thousands of starving Palestinians typically gather near the sites. The scenes have been chaotic, turning deadly as people rush when gunfire is heard. More than 170 NGOs, including the UN, and several states such as the UK have condemned Israel's 'inhumane' aid distribution system. While aid, including baby milk, fuel and water continues to be largely denied entry into Gaza, the humanitarian situation has deteriorated beyond control. One in three people in Gaza are going without food, and 90,000 children need treatment for malnutrition, the UN has said. The ability of humanitarian agencies to respond is also being limited, Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the UN 's World Food Programme, told reporters in New York on Friday. 'I met many of these families who told me that they go through days when their children don't eat at all, but on the days they do eat, they often have hot soup with a meagre handful of lentils or a few pieces of pasta. 'Mothers told me how they try to keep their children from playing so they don't consume more energy than can be provided by food,' Mr Skau said.

NRC leads UAE-wide anti-drug efforts highlighting prevention, community engagement

26 June 2025 00:48 KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (ABU DHABI)Hailed worldwide for its progressive stance to drug-related issues, the UAE has long been committed to combating substance abuse through wide-reaching, community-focused initiatives alongside an advanced policing and security apparatus. Leading the country's efforts on addiction prevention and treatment is the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) in Abu Dhabi. For the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day), marked annually on June 26, the NRC has rolled out a series of awareness initiatives nationwide, aiming to drive home the idea of prevention as being the most impactful way to combat drug abuse. Yousef Altheeb Alketbi, CEO of NRC, emphasised the day's significance as both a symbolic reminder and a strategic call to action. 'World Drug Day serves as a powerful reminder of the complex challenges surrounding addiction and the shared responsibility to address them through compassion, education, and evidence-based action,' Alketbi told Aletihad ahead of the occasion. 'At the NRC, this day underscores our commitment to both individuals and communities impacted by substance use. While addiction is real, so is recovery and no one should have to face it alone.'Among the flagship initiatives this year is the Drug Prevention Forum at Galleria Mall, as well as a collaboration with ADNOC, which has facilitated the display of anti-drug messages at 100 fuel stations across the country. Moreover, digital billboards at major hubs like Al Qana are reinforcing these messages, reaching thousands of residents and visitors every day.'The UAE's approach is a model of unity and shared responsibility,' said Alketbi. 'Prevention becomes most effective when it is community-driven, relevant, and inclusive; transforming awareness into meaningful action.' Supporting Long-term Healing Beyond awareness, the UAE continues to evolve in its handling of addiction and rehabilitation. There is a notable shift in public perception, with more families actively seeking help and engaging in recovery processes, Alketbi said. 'The emphasis is increasingly on holistic, family-inclusive care that reduces stigma and supports long-term healing,' he noted.'There is growing public awareness, and more individuals and families are actively engaging in recovery processes.'The NRC's rehabilitation model remains firmly rooted in evidence-based international 2024 alone, the organisation conducted over 107 awareness activities, targeting both public and private sectors under the national campaign titled 'From Prevention to Recovery.'The centre has also developed specialised training programmes for educators, enabling early detection of substance use among students. More than 60 teachers have been trained so far in 2025, with a robust follow-up mechanism to ensure continued impact.A growing area of focus for the NRC is addressing co-occurring mental health issues, especially among young people. Through digital outreach, community workshops, and life-skills programmes, the centre is hoping to empower individuals to make healthier choices and resist substance use.'Addiction is not just a health issue; it's a societal challenge that requires coordinated and compassionate solutions,' said Alketbi. 'World Drug Day helps us recommit to that vision, not just for today, but every day.'
