PM Anwar Welcomes Positive Signals From Bangkok, Phnom Penh To Consider Ceasefire
Anwar said he had spoken to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai Thursday evening to express Malaysia's concern over the escalation of tensions.
'In our conversations, in Malaysia's capacity as ASEAN Chair for 2025, I appealed directly to both leaders for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further hostilities and to create space for peaceful dialogue and diplomatic resolution.

'I welcome the positive signals and willingness shown by both Bangkok and Phnom Penh to consider this path forward,' he said in a Facebook post.
The prime minister said Malaysia stands ready to assist and facilitate this process in the spirit of ASEAN unity and shared responsibility.
'I firmly believe that ASEAN's strength lies in its solidarity and that peace must always be our collective and unwavering choice,' he said.
Thai and Cambodian troops reportedly clashed early Thursday in a disputed area along their shared border, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the latest confrontation.
Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours have been rising since May 28, following a deadly border clash near the Preah Vihear area that left one Cambodian soldier dead.
The two Southeast Asian neighbours have been disputing an 817-km undemarcated border for decades, which continues to sour diplomatic ties.

Royal Thai Army to present evidence of Cambodia's deliberate attacks on civilians to the international community
BANGKOK: The Royal Thai Army plans to show international diplomats the damage from Cambodia's artillery attacks on Thai civilians, including homes, schools, and hospitals. Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, on Wednesday (July 30) discussed the Cambodian military's recent decision to allow foreign military attachés to inspect the area of the border clash at Chong An Ma area in Ubon Ratchathani. He said the foreign delegation's visit showcased the damage caused by the use of weapons from both sides, which is expected in such a military operational zone. However, the area remains a key military target. "The Thai side also has plans to organise similar events. However, we won't focus on creating misleading or superficial images," said Winthai. "Our priority is to communicate the true damage to the international community, particularly the destruction of civilian infrastructure—homes, schools, and hospitals—that the Cambodian military deliberately targeted. "This has led to significant civilian casualties, even though these areas are deeply inside Thai territory, some 10-30 kilometres from the actual combat zones." He further condemned the Cambodian actions as a violation of Thailand's sovereignty and contrary to international military law and humanitarian principles, particularly the breaches of multiple international conventions prohibiting attacks on non-combat areas. The Royal Thai Army reiterated that its operations are solely focused on military targets, adhering strictly to international laws. Malaysia, Vietnam call for continued monitoring of Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Vietnam have reaffirmed the importance of continued monitoring of the ceasefire implementation between Cambodia and Thailand, to ensure lasting peace and stability in the Asean region. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter was agreed upon during a telephone conversation with his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Minh Chinh, earlier today. "We welcomed the positive progress in the ceasefire negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, including the visit by a monitoring team led by Malaysia to the affected areas. "Both parties also stressed the need for ongoing monitoring efforts to safeguard peace and stability in the Asean region," he said in a statement. Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following a special meeting on Monday, which brought together Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, with Anwar serving as host and Asean chair. During the call, Anwar said they also exchanged views on global issues, including the United States' tariffs, and explored future cooperation in areas such as innovation, energy security, and the Asean Power Grid initiative. He also welcomed Vietnam's readiness to send a ministerial-level delegation to strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries. Anwar added that both sides would remain in close contact ahead of their next meeting in China, scheduled for early September.
