Gyokeres 'Going To Destroy You', Warns Arsenal's Arteta Ahead Of New PL Season
After watching three consecutive Premier League titles slip away to Manchester City, Arsenal have acted decisively this summer, making bold, early moves in the transfer market to ensure squad depth is no longer a weakness in their quest for silverware.
At the heart of this ambition is Viktor Gyökeres, the prolific Swedish striker who scored an extraordinary 54 goals in all competitions for Sporting CP last season, instantly becoming one of the most sought-after players in Europe.
Manager Mikel Arteta made no secret of his satisfaction at securing Arsenal's top target.
'I was extremely happy with the way that we have approached the window and how aggressive we've been," Arteta said. 'So far, we are very happy with what we have achieved. Make sure that at the end of the window, we continue to be super happy."
Gyökeres's arrival signals a potential tactical evolution for Arsenal. Unlike Kai Havertz, who often drops deep to link play, Gyökeres thrives in the final third, using his direct running and predatory instincts to threaten the goal constantly.
'When you leave him with the space, one-on-one, he's going to destroy you," Arteta declared, underlining the Swede's lethal edge.
Arsenal's recruitment has extended beyond the front line. Martín Zubimendi brings mobility, defensive solidity, and control in midfield, while Christian Nørgaard adds Premier League experience and leadership, having captained Brentford.
'You have to mix it up with some veteran players as well. I think we have a really good balance in our squad this year," midfielder Mikel Merino noted.
The club has also stayed true to its academy roots, with Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly breaking through last season, and 15-year-old Max Dowman now impressing in pre-season.
Arsenal reached the Champions League semi-finals last season and pushed City close in the league again. Now, with Gyökeres leading the line, Arteta has the attacking focal point he lacked.
The aim is now clear: end a five-year trophy drought and finally convert promise into Premier League glory.

India in U20 women's Asian Cup after 20 years
New Delhi: India women will play in the AFC U20 Asian Cup after two decades. The national U20 women's team beat hosts Myanmar 1-0 in their final Group D game in Yangon on Sunday to secure the spot for the 2026 continental tournament. India last played in the U20 Asia Cup in Malaysia in 2006. The India U20 women's team beat hosts Myanmar 1-0 in their final Group D game in Yangon on Sunday to secure the spot for the 2026 Asian Cup. (AIFF) Winger Pooja's 27th minute goal proved decisive in the match played at Yangon's Thuwunna Stadium. India finished on top of Group D with seven points to qualify for the tournament. India drew goalless with Indonesia and beat Turkmenistan 7-0 in their first two games in a campaign where they didn't concede. The U20 women's team had their best finish in the 2004 edition, when they reached the quarter-finals. India had the upper hand in the first half while the home team, chasing an equaliser, pushed hard after the break. India went close as early as the third minute when Neha sent a sharp cross, but Sibani Devi could not tap in from close. For Myanmar, Su Su Khin went close after Yin Loon Eain chested it down in the ninth minute. However, it was India who went ahead through Pooja. It was the winger herself who initiated the attack on the counter before crossing from the right. The Myanmar defenders failed to intercept and Neha, on the other wing, gained possession and sent a looping cross back. Pooja, having arrived at the goalmouth, bundled the ball across the line with her body. Although India, guided by Swedish coach Joakim Bernt Alexandersson held on to the lead, they had to weather the pressure Myanmar brought on them after resumption. In the 48th minute, India goalkeeper Monalisha Devi made a fine save to keep Su Su Khin's attempt out. Monalisha, who had kept a clean slate in the first two group game, pulled off a very important save with 10 minutes left, swatting away to safety after substitute Moe Pwint Phyu headed Ei Thet Phyo's cross on to the upright and the ball rolled along the goal line. Moe almost scored in the 90th minute but she struck the woodwork and the ball went out of play. Off the counter, Sibani crossed to Sulanjana Raul, but her header struck the bar. India held on to take the points and seal their berth in the 2026 Asia Cup in Thailand. All India Football Federation announced a prizemoney of $25,000 for the squad.

AIFF Announces $25,000 Reward For U-20 Women's Team After Historic AFC Asian Cup Qualification
The AIFF announced a $25,000 incentive for the Indian U-20 women's team after they qualified for the AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup, topping Group D unbeaten. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Sunday announced a cash incentive of USD 25,000 for the Indian U-20 women's team following their qualification for the AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup for the first time since 2006. The Young Tigresses sealed top spot in Group D with seven points, wrapping up their qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts Myanmar in Yangon. Midfielder Pooja scored the decisive goal in the 27th minute, initiating a counter-attack before finishing the move herself. Dominant and Unbeaten Campaign India's qualification run was marked by defensive solidity and attacking flair. The team began with a goalless draw against Indonesia, followed by a commanding 7-0 win over Turkmenistan, before edging past Myanmar. Remarkably, they remained unbeaten and did not concede a single goal in the qualifiers. The AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup will be held in Thailand in April 2026, bringing together the continent's best youth teams. The AIFF credited the achievement to 'sustained planning and developmental efforts over the past few years" in partnership with the Sports Authority of India. The U-20 squad has been in camp since December 2024, spending 135 days together in preparation. Their build-up included participation in the Pink Ladies Youth Cup in Turkey, where they beat Hong Kong and Jordan, as well as training stints with the senior national team. They also played two friendlies against Uzbekistan U-20s in Tashkent, drawing 1-1 and winning 4-1. The AIFF also highlighted the role of the ASMITA Women's Football Leagues in boosting grassroots participation, citing a '232% increase" in registered women footballers over the past year. The 2025-26 season has already begun with the U-13 ASMITA Football Leagues, featuring 50 tournaments across 26 states, involving around 8,000 players from 400 teams. Glenn Maxwell Takes Suryakumar Yadav-Like Catch In 1st AUS-SA T20I, Video Goes Viral
Last Updated: The incident took place on the second ball of the last over of the match bowled by Australian fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis in Darwin on Sunday. Star Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was not able to do much with the bat in the first T20I against South Africa on Sunday (August 10), but he made his presence felt in the contest by taking a spectacular catch in the last over of the match, which the Aussies won by 17 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the home series. In a video going viral on the internet, Maxwell can be seen completing a catch which reminded fans of Suryakumar Yadav's catch from the T20 World Cup 2024 final against the same opposition. Here's a look: The incident took place on the second ball of the last over of the match bowled by Ben Dwarshuis. Left-handed wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton was on strike. The South African opener tried to play a big shot to add six runs to his team's tally, but Maxwell had other plans. The Punjab Kings star not only prevented the definite six but also completed the catch cleanly to end Rickelton's fighting knock of 71 runs from 55 balls and also cancel South Africa's chances of winning the match. The win over South Africa on Sunday was Australia's ninth win in a row in T20Is. This is the first time in history that Aussies have won nine T20Is in a row. The streak started on November 14, 2024, when, under Josh Inglis' leadership, Australia defeated Pakistan by 29 runs in Brisbane. The Aussies then won two more matches against the Men in Green, and in July 2025, they won five matches in a row against the West Indies. The overall record of most consecutive wins in T20I matches is held by Uganda. The African team, which featured in the 2024 T20 World Cup, has won 17 matches in a row. Spain is in second place with 15 wins, and Japan won 14 matches in a row from May 9, 2024, to May 9, 2025. Among Test-playing nations, India won 12 T20I matches in a row from November 3, 2021, to February 27, 2022. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
