Pub fined after boy's allergic reaction to sausage

Yahoo09-05-2025

A pub chain has been fined almost £27,000 after a young boy had an allergic reaction to a sausage.
St Albans Magistrates Court heard that the mother of the boy, from Welwyn Garden City, had been assured twice that the sausage did not contain wheat.
The Rusty Gun, in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, later confirmed that there was wheat in the food and offered the boy's parents a free meal as an apology.
The owners, Innventure, said those who had "let this young man down" had been dismissed or had resigned.
The boy, called Ralph, was nine years old at the time and went for a birthday meal at the Rusty Gun in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, with his parents, Lauren and James, in August 2023.
The court was told that Lauren asked the pub staff on two occasions whether the sausage chosen by her son contained wheat.
Waiting staff checked with the chefs in the kitchen and told Lauren the recipe did not contain wheat.
Ralph began to feel unwell after eating just a quarter of the sausage.
Back at home, parts of Ralph's body began to swell; he had red hives all over him and had difficulty breathing.
He was given steroids and adrenaline at the local hospital before being transferred to Lister Hospital in Stevenage.
Lauren said: "It's every parent's worst nightmare watching their child struggle to breathe, and I was thinking the worst.
"I will always have a lasting memory of Ralph asking me if he was going to die that night."
She said she called the Rusty Gun and asked whether they were sure the sausage contained no wheat.
"I was then told 'we made a mistake' and - can you believe it? - I was offered a free meal!"
Hertfordshire Trading Standards investigated the incident and charged the pub's owners, Innventure, with two offences under food safety legislation.
Innventure pleaded guilty at St Albans Magistrates Court on 6 May and was ordered to pay a total of £26,802.76 in fines and costs.
Ralph was awarded £1,000 in compensation.
A spokesperson for Innventure said: "Those that let the company and this young man down in August 2023 have been dismissed or have resigned.
"We have undertaken a comprehensive review of the allergens processes and procedures operated by the business. New and improved systems are in place to ensure that this never happens again.
"We offer and have offered our sincerest apologies to the young man in question."
Tanya Ednan-Laperouse OBE, from the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, said: "We would urge anyone working with food to take food allergies seriously so that all people can eat out safely."

‘Unfathomable': Seth Rogen Torches Lawmakers Threatening Cuts to Medicaid

Lauren Miller Rogen was 22 years old, celebrating her graduation from college the first time she noticed something was happening to her mother, Adele. It was relatively minor: 'She repeated herself — she told a story a few times about a friend of hers,' Rogen says. But for Lauren, who had watched Adele care for her own parents as they slowly succumbed to Alzheimer's disease, it was the potential future that unnerved her. Within two years, Adele, a first-grade teacher, would be diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's at age 55. By that time, Lauren was living in Los Angeles, and dating her then-boyfriend, the actor Seth Rogen. When the couple married a few years later, Adele's condition had progressed to the point that it wasn't clear at their wedding if she even realized who Lauren was. 'She knew I was the bride — she kept calling me the bride,' Lauren recalled in Taking Care, a documentary the couple made to raise awareness about the challenges that families face while caring for a person with advancing dementia. The toll of caring for Adele was hardest on Lauren's father. 'There was a time early on, before we brought care in, where we were like, 'Oh, we're gonna lose him first.' This — caring for her — seemed like it's literally killing him,' she says. 'Without being able to afford outside help, I dread imagining what would have happened,' Lauren says. The couple went on to found a nonprofit, Hilarity for Charity, that disburses grants to offset the cost of caring for a person with dementia. 'Until we were part of the care system, we didn't realize how broken it was,' Seth says in a video they recorded on behalf of the organization Caring Across Generations, to raise alarms about the threat families face under a pair of proposals to slash health care programs for the poor and disabled that are being considered at the state and federal level, and encourage people to contact their legislators. He adds, 'Millions of low income families, families of people with disabilities, families that have older adults in them, are facing this struggle every day right now. And that is why it is so unfathomable that federal and state legislatures are making massive cuts to Medicaid as we speak.' 'We are cutting crucial services for people who are aging and disabled,' he explains. 'That means these people will be losing access or have less access to the health care they need, creating more out-of-pocket expenses and medical debt.' In Washington, President Donald Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill,' which was recently approved by the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, would cut roughly $600 billion from Medicaid in order to help pay for a new round of tax cuts for the wealthy. The Trump tax bill is projected to kick over 10 million people off Medicaid, the government health insurance program for low-income and disabled Americans. The legislation would also limit so-called provider taxes, which states use to provide supplemental payments to hospitals, doctors, and other health care providers to help pay the costs of treating Medicaid patients. The bill would additionally impose a financial penalty on states, like California, that offer health coverage to undocumented immigrants. In California, the situation could be compounded by further cuts proposed by Governor Gavin Newsom (D) that would slash Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program. Roughly one quarter of the five million Americans with dementia rely on Medicaid, the country's largest payer of long-term care. Medicaid is a pillar for caregivers — some 12 percent of recipients are people who can't work because of their responsibilities caring for a family member. Their ability to access the program could be jeopardized by the Big Beautiful Bill, which would impose work requirements on all able-bodied adults under 65 in order to qualify for Medicaid. 'Almost everyone in this country knows or loves someone that relies on Medicaid, even if they don't rely on Medicaid themselves. And we have the power together,' Lauren says in the video. 'We need to reject any cuts or changes that would take more care away from families that need and deserve it,' Seth adds. 'At the state level and the federal level.' Inside ‘Love Is Blind' Stars Cameron and Lauren's Home as They Reveal Pregnancy Joy After 4-Year Struggle To Conceive

'Love Is Blind' stars Cameron and Lauren Hamilton have revealed they are expecting their first baby together after a four-year struggle to conceive—while opening up about the moment they found out their happy news while in the bathroom of their Atlanta home. The expectant parents, who met and married in 2018 on the first season of the Netflix hit, remain one of the only 'Love Is Blind' couples to have made their relationship last after the cameras stopped rolling. However, their relationship has seen its fair share of hardships, they revealed in a new interview with People, in which they spoke out about the fertility struggles they've grappled with over the last four years. Cameron, 34, and Lauren, 37, admitted they 'fell to their knees' when they discovered that they were expecting after Lauren underwent in vitro fertilization, or IVF. Cameron gushed, 'We were counting down the day till we could test because we did IVF. We knew, okay, this is the day that we're going to do the test. Of course, we're going in for a blood test later that day, but we couldn't wait any longer. 'We did the classic test and we both went into the bathroom to look at the Clearblue test and it was face down. We flipped it over. We saw the word pregnant, and that was just a huge moment to actually see the word pregnant on the test. It was a—' His wife, who is in her second trimester, finished his sentence, revealing that seeing the word 'pregnant' was a huge 'relief' after the many ups and downs of the past four years. 'Because, well, we've taken a few pregnancy tests and when you use the ones with the lines, it could be anxiety driven because it's like, 'Is that what I think?' So seeing the word 'pregnant,' it was amazing. We just looked at each other. I fell to my knees and cried,' she revealed. 'It's been a long time coming. We've literally been trying to get pregnant for four years.' Lauren candidly opened up about the 'indescribable' feeling, noting that the positive test was a 'light' at the end of the tunnel after her father passed away. She explained, 'I lost my father [at] Christmas of last year, and so we took this test the end of January, beginning of February, so this was literally light in the darkness. This was like, wow. The spark that my whole family needed. We've been trying for a long time.' 'It was a little bittersweet because my dad's not here physically to be with us, but we know that he's watching over us. So it was just like, 'Wow, I can't believe this.' We just felt so blessed, so grateful and happy, excited. Then it hit like, 'We're going to be parents. Oh my God.'' Lauren gushed about her husband's character and revealed that he has been extremely supportive through their IVF journey, adding that he has been 'patient' and 'awesome.' The mom-to-be admitted that her first trimester was 'rough;' however, she is now adapting to her second trimester, which sees her constantly craving 'cheese.' 'One thing I that I do crave is cheese. I want cheese puffs, I want macaroni and cheese. I want just regular shredded cheese in my mouth. Cheese and fruit have been my thing,' she revealed. The couple also confessed that they have turned to some of their 'Love Is Blind' castmates for advice, specifically Amber and Matt Barnett, who recently welcomed their first baby. 'Amber is full of advice. She's giving me the real, real lowdown advice,' Lauren revealed. Cameron and Lauren will be raising their child in their Atlanta home, which they purchased in 2021 for $780,000. The two-story property is perfect for a growing family as it comes complete with five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, all situated on a 1.09-acre lot. The home's facade is adorned in sage green paneling and brick, while the structure is surrounded in lush greenery. The 5,400-square-foot abode boasts an expansive interior, two cozy fireplaces, 9-foot-high ceilings, a walk-in closet, and a three-car garage. Lauren and Cameron also hold the keys to a one-bedroom, one-bath condo in Georgia. Abell Pest Control Celebrates the 100th Birthday of Ralph Abell, Second Generation Leader in Century Old Family Business

Toronto, Ontario, May 27, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- This month, Abell Pest Control proudly celebrates a remarkable milestone: the 100th birthday of Ralph Abell, a second-generation leader whose life and legacy are deeply woven into the fabric of the company. Founded in 1924 by his father, Earl Abell, in the basement and garage of their Toronto home, the business began as a modest pesticide manufacturing operation. Under Ralph's guidance and vision, it evolved into one of the most trusted names in pest control across Canada and beyond, a true Canadian success story built on family values, innovation, and service. From its earliest days, Abell Pest Control was founded on family, hard work, and a commitment to integrity. Ralph exemplified these principles. Known for his technical expertise and forward-thinking leadership, he championed a model of pest control that was quiet, effective, and people-focused. 'Ralph was a true pioneer in the pest control industry, ahead of his time in both service and how he treated people,' said Brett MacKillop, President of Abell Pest Control. 'He believed in doing things right, focusing on lasting solutions, and showing genuine respect for customers and team members. His values, innovation, integrity, and excellence still guide our business today.' As President of the Canadian Pest Management Association from 1972 to 1974, Ralph helped raise public awareness about the industry and the importance of using pesticides safely. He also worked closely with government officials to improve regulations and promote higher standards across the industry. Ralph joined the business full-time in 1940 as the first technician, having spent his childhood learning from his father, Earl Abell. His hands-on experience and natural understanding of the industry helped shape a unique perspective: that pest control isn't just about eliminating problems, it's about keeping families and communities safe. In 1960, Ralph Abell became President, leading the company into a period of expansion and modernization. 'Pest control is essential to public health and well-being,' said MacKillop. 'From preventing the spread of disease to safeguarding food supplies, our work remains necessary. Over the past century, the industry has advanced from basic chemicals to science-driven, sustainable solutions. What has endured is the unwavering commitment to public health and safety, a legacy instilled by Ralph Abell.' Happy 100th birthday, Ralph!
