Homes at risk: West Acres residents sound the alarm over land invasion
According to them, members of the Mataffin community have been occupying parts of Eligedleni Farm over the past two weeks. Trees have been cut down and makeshift roads cleared, with the apparent intention to build homes.
Residents believe the invasion will negatively impact property values in the area.
A community meeting was held on an open piece of land on Monday, July 8, to discuss the issue. A resident representative, who asked not to be named, said she had been in contact with Terry Mdhluli, whom she identified as one of the landowners.

'Terry is co-operative. He has been in communication with me the whole day. I hope he arrives at this meeting, but if not, I will be seeing him on Thursday to discuss the way forward,' she said.
During the meeting, it emerged that a court order issued in 2021 prohibits anyone, including members of the Mataffin community, from occupying the land.
Residents also claimed that plots were allegedly being sold for as little as R200, although it remains unclear who is behind the sales.
The zoning status of the land also remains in question. An official from the City of Mbombela (CoM), who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said a formal township had been approved, although the area had previously been designated for agricultural use.
Mdhluli eventually arrived at the meeting and confirmed that he and other stakeholders would meet with the police on Wednesday, July 10, to seek a resolution.
'This land belongs to us, the Matsafeni Trust. As you can see, people are trying to enter the space illegally,' he said.
'We already have a permanent court order preventing any invasion, because this is not the first time it has happened.'
Mdhluli said that law enforcement and the sheriff had visited the area on July 3 but were threatened by the land invaders. He assured residents that the police would take action.
'No one is going to live here without following proper procedures. Once the police remove the invaders, we will erect a fence and hire a security company to protect the land,' he said.
However, a Mataffin community member told Lowvelder that the land rightfully belongs to the community and accused criminals of using it to hide and store stolen goods. 'It is within our rights to occupy the land because it has been abandoned,' he said.

Marumo Gallants found guilty – but did Cape Town City get the outcome they wanted?
Gallants in trouble Marumo Gallants have been found guilty of playing an incorrectly registered Monde Mpambaniso during last season's league campaign. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Relegated Cape Town City's bid to remain in the Betway Premiership has taken yet another knock after the punishment handed out to Marumo Gallants for fielding an incorrectly registered player. After the PSL initially refused to prosecute Gallants over their incorrect registration of Monde Mpambaniso, Cape Town City approached the SAFA arbitration tribunal to force the league to look at the matter. Gallants pleaded guilty when appearing in front of the PSL Disciplinary Committee for the improper registration of Mpambaniso. As a result of the guilty verdict, Gallants will have to pay a fine of R200,000, with 50% suspended for 24 months. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. 'Should they reoffend, that suspended portion would be triggered immediately, and they will be further sanctioned for that subsequent misdemeanour.' The punishment will not go down well with relegated Cape Town City bosses, who led the charge against Gallants hoping for a points deduction. A points deduction would have seen Gallants finish bottom of the Betway Premiership, resulting in the Citizens retaining their place in the league. This case represented the Cape Town club's last throw of the dice to remain in the top flight after their attempts to buy another club's status did not succeed. It's a bitter pill to swallow for the Capetonians. While the guilty verdict confirms their concerns were valid, the absence of a points deduction means the club must now come to terms with life in the lower division. PSL DC makes ruling on Gallants, Mphambaniso matter
Gallants pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined fined. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee has fined Marumo Gallants for fielding an ineligible player .last season. The case was brought back to the PSL DC after SAFA Arbitrator Nazeer Cassim SC ruled in favour of Cape Town City and said the PSL DC should initiate an investigation into Mphambaniso's eligibility. READ MORE: Will City case open door for Chiefs to sneak into top eight? Now PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed on Thursday evening that Gallants pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined fined an amount of R200 000 for fielding Mphambaniso during the 2024/25 season. 'I can confirm that a short while ago, the PSL DC just finalised a disciplinary matter in which I had preferred charges of misconduct against Marumo Gallants Football Club as well as its player, Mr. Monde Mphambaniso,' said Majavu. 'This case stemmed from the registration of Mr. Mphambaniso, which was procured by Marumo Gallants without the required clearance certificate in accordance of the rules of the league. Mindful of the circumstances, the context and the background against which this player was registered, Marumo Gallants pleaded guilty, and in the result, were subsequently convicted as such. 'Coming to the issue of sanction, having listened to the evidence in aggravation as well as the evidence in mitigation and the prevailing contextual background pertaining to this matter, which I must hasten to add that was subjected to a variety of disciplinary proceedings, served before various appeal tribunals, including a recent arbitration which resulted in a directive by the arbitrator that they be charged. 'The PSL DC ruled as follows, one that Marumo Gallants be fined an amount of 200,000 Rands, half of which is immediately payable, and the other half suspended for 24 months, on condition that during the period of suspension they are not found guilty of the same offence again. Should they reoffend, that suspended portion would be triggered immediately, and they will be further sanctioned for that subsequent misdemeanour. They were further directed to carry the costs of the DC hearing up until the matter was finalised, which costs would be completed administratively, and then on forwarded to Marum Gallants to pay. 'With regard to the player. The player was found not guilty, and in the result, no sanction was meted out to him. This is the end of this matter for now, unless a party that is aggrieved by this outcome exercises its right to appeal, in which case we will deal with that matter when it arises.'

Witbank church robbery and kidnapping ends in two arrests
A group of armed suspects robbed and kidnapped church members, but police tracked down the stolen vehicles and arrested two suspects. A group of armed suspects stormed a church service in Witbank, Mpumalanga, kidnapped and robbed congregants, but were later tracked down and arrested by the police. At around 8.55pm on Wednesday, a group of more than five armed men stormed into the church premises in Klipfontein. The suspects threatened the congregants with firearms. The suspects ordered about nine church members who were present at the time to lie down. They then searched the victims— including the pastor and other church leaders — and tied them up with cable ties. Multiple items stolen during church robbery and kidnapping The suspects robbed the congregants of their phones, wallets containing bank cards, laptops, and the church's computer screen. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said the suspects also demanded the car keys and PIN codes for the phones. The victims were also forced into three vehicles belonging to them. 'The suspects then drove off to a remote area in the bushes, where two of them remained to guard the victims while the others went away, only to return later and collect their two accomplices,' Mdhluli said. 'Thanks to the diligent work of Witbank Detectives and Vosman Vispol, the law enforcement agencies managed to locate all victims in a bushy area in Kromdraai,' Mdhluli said. One suspect sustained minor injuries and was given medical treatment by the medical personnel. Three vehicles recovered After the incident was reported, the police and tracking company worked together and successfully traced two of the hijacked vehicles. One car was found near Vosman, and the other in Silverton, Gauteng, on Wednesday evening. Mdhluli said that in total, three vehicles were recovered. A Mercedes-Benz was found in the possession of a 21-year-old, and a Volkswagen Polo was abandoned in Vosman. An Isuzu KB Bakkie was traced and recovered in Silverton, where a 27-year-old male suspect was arrested.
