
MIHAS 2025 targets RM4.5bil in global halal trade
KUALA LUMPUR: The 21st Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) aims to generate RM4.5 billion in global halal trade for 2025, driven by its artificial intelligence-powered Madani Digital Trade (MDT) platform.
The MDT platform, launched in March, is designed to connect businesses, match trade partners, and support cross-border halal trade, particularly for small and medium enterprises.
MIHAS is hosted by the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) and organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade).
Last year, the halal trade exhibition recorded RM4.3 billion in sales and attracted more than 43,000 visitors from 90 countries.
Miti deputy secretary-general (Industry) Datuk Hanafi Sakri said the halal industry is projected to contribute 10.8 per cent, or RM231 billion, to Malaysia's gross domestic product by 2030.
Globally, he said demand for halal products is valued at over US$3 trillion and is expected to reach US$5 trillion by 2030, fuelled by growing interest in ethical and sustainable consumption.
"Malaysia continues to maintain its top position in the Global Islamic Economy Indicator rankings for 10 consecutive years, followed by Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates.
"Malaysia's strength lies in Islamic finance, halal food, as well as media and recreation," he said at the Mihas soft launch event here today.
Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the theme 'Pinnacle of Halal Excellence' reflects Malaysia's efforts to highlight innovation and global leadership in the halal sector.
He said MIHAS 2025 will also showcase the diversity of Asean cultures to encourage business collaboration and dialogue.
"Despite the complexities of the current global trade landscape, such as the recent tariff impositions, we maintain our strong commitment to achieving a minimum of 5.0 per cent export growth towards the RM1.58 trillion target set for the year," he said.
Following its first international edition in Dubai last year, the next global installment of MIHAS will take place in Shanghai this November, as part of the China International Import Expo (CIIE).
"The Shanghai edition will also showcase a comprehensive range of halal offerings that would further facilitate valuable business connections between international suppliers and Chinese distributors and retailers," Reezal Merican added.
MIHAS 2025 will run from Sept 17 to 20 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, featuring 14 industry clusters, including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, Islamic finance, modest fashion, and Islamic art and crafts.

But it did nothing to address the underlying reasons for Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods, mainly longstanding U.S. complaints about China's state-dominated, export-driven economic model, leaving those issues for future talks. A US trade court on Wednesday ruled that Trump overstepped his authority in imposing the bulk of his tariffs on imports from China and other countries under an emergency powers act. But less than 24 hours later, a federal appeals court reinstated the tariffs, saying it was pausing the trade court ruling to consider the government's appeal. The appeals court ordered the plaintiffs to respond by June 5 and the administration to respond by June 9. He said during the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Northern Annual Luncheon Dialogue 2025 here today that Penang remains open for business, innovation and collaboration because the state has always been about resilience. 'From our trading port roots to our rise as a global electronics and innovation hub, we have learned to pivot when the world shifts and this moment is no different. Our economy is tightly integrated into global supply chains whether it's semiconductors, electronics, precision tools or medical devices. 'So when shocks happen, they are felt in Bayan Lepas and Batu Kawan just as much as in Shanghai (China) or San Jose (California). But I always say, we must look for silver linings, not all is doom and gloom,' he said. Malaysia's PMI Remains Contracted Amid Weak Demand And Tariff Concerns
Malaysia's Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) saw a marginal increase to 48.8 in May, up from 48.6 in April, according to the latest data. However, the index remained below the neutral 50.0 mark for the twelfth consecutive month since June 2024, signaling a continued, albeit mild, deterioration in manufacturing conditions midway through the second quarter of 2025. Despite the prolonged contraction, economists anticipate that Malaysia's Manufacturing GDP growth in 2Q25 is likely to remain relatively stable, mirroring the performance of the previous quarters (1Q25: 4.1%; 4Q24: 4.2%). Weak Demand Persists, Weighing on Key Indicators: The latest PMI reading highlights the persistent challenge of weak demand. Total new orders continued their downward trend for the third straight month, although the pace of decline has eased. Notably, new export orders also contracted for the sixth consecutive month, indicating sluggish external demand. Finished goods inventories continued to decline, suggesting manufacturers are adjusting to lower order volumes. While the rate of inventory reduction has slowed, overall stock levels remain lower. Rising Input Costs Amid Stable Output Prices: Manufacturers faced increased pressure from rising input costs in May. Input prices saw their most significant jump since November 2024, primarily attributed to unfavorable exchange rates and the impact of new tariffs, which have increased the cost of imported raw materials. Interestingly, despite the higher input costs, output charges remained unchanged in May, ending a four-month period of price declines. Business Optimism Dips Amid Global Uncertainties: Business sentiment within the manufacturing sector has taken a hit, falling to its lowest level since June 2021. While firms expressed relative optimism for better demand conditions in the coming year, the prevailing concerns surrounding US trade tensions and ongoing labor shortages have dampened overall confidence. Employment levels remained steady in May, halting a seven-month streak of job cuts. Companies continued to work through outstanding orders, with backlogs declining slightly. Outlook: Domestic Demand to Provide Cushion Amid Tariff Uncertainty: MIDF Research has revised its 2025 GDP growth forecast for Malaysia downwards to 4.3% (from 4.8%), following a weaker-than-expected performance in 1Q25 (4.4%). The downgrade also factors in anticipated headwinds in the second half of the year stemming from global trade uncertainty linked to potential US tariffs. While the possibility of a favorable Malaysia-US trade deal exists, a return to pre-2024 tariff levels is deemed unlikely. Despite these external challenges, MIDF believes that Malaysia could still benefit from trade and investment diversion resulting from the ongoing US-China decoupling, leveraging its strategic location and diversified export portfolio.
