Sir Philip Pullman announces finale to The Book Of Dust trilogy

Yahoo29-04-2025
Author Sir Philip Pullman has announced the final volume in his best-selling series The Book Of Dust.
The Rose Field will be released on October 23, 30 years after Sir Philip introduced Lyra Belacqua and her daemon Pantalaimon in the novel Northern Lights, part of the His Dark Materials trilogy.
Welsh actor Michael Sheen narrated the first two volumes of The Book Of Dust and will return to narrate the final book.
Sir Philip, 78, said: 'I think of The Rose Field as partly a thriller and partly a bildungsroman: a story of psychological, moral and emotional growth.
'But it's also a vision. Lyra's world is changing, just as ours is. The power over people's lives once held by old institutions and governments is seeping away and reappearing in another form: that of money, capital, development, commerce, exchange.
'Over a long and dangerous journey searching for her daemon Pan and with him her lost imagination, Lyra comes to discover a new understanding of the world: that this change affects everything, from the way roads are built to the relationship people have with their deepest selves.
'It may be other things too, but I hope that fundamentally and permanently The Rose Field will be read as a story.
'I think of myself as a storyteller rather than a novelist or a writer of literary fiction, belonging among the tellers of folk tales, fairy tales, ballads and myths.'
In the second book in the series, The Secret Commonwealth, Lyra was alone in the ruins of a deserted city and her daemon Pantalaimon had run from her.
In The Rose Field Lyra's quest converges with Malcolm Polstead, an academic and friend of Lyra's, and they must take help from spies and thieves, gryphons and witches while the world is aflame.
Lyra featured in the His Dark Materials trilogy, which included The Subtle Knife, published in 1997, and The Amber Spyglass, published in 2000, as well as Northern Lights.
His Dark Materials was turned into a TV series featuring Luther star Ruth Wilson, who has narrated new audio editions of the books in celebration of 30 years.
Fantasy adventure film The Golden Compass, released in 2007 and starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, was based on Northern Lights.
Francesca Dow, managing director at Penguin Random House Children's (UK), said: 'In the six years since The Secret Commonwealth was published, we know that hundreds of thousands of readers have been desperate to return – for the final time – to Lyra and her world.
'That wait will soon be over and from the first pages of The Rose Field, those readers will find that this world, and Lyra herself, are changing.
'This is storytelling at its most brilliant, set against a vast, extraordinary canvas, an intricate and most magical story about what it is to be human.
'It is also a gripping quest that surprises and delights at every twist and turn, a true page-turner. I could not put it down and I could not bear for it to end.'
She added: 'Readers around the globe will share in my belief: that we owe Philip Pullman – the storyteller of storytellers – our heartfelt thanks for giving us the opportunity to meet Lyra, and journey with her, and see her grow up into a fearless and endlessly fascinating woman.'
The Rose Field: The Book Of Dust Volume Three will be published in hardback, trade paperback, ebook and audiobook on October 23 2025 by David Fickling Books in association with Penguin Random House in the UK, featuring original new illustrations from Chris Wormell.

Through this partnership, we are excited to offer them a premium collection of distinctly British series to complement their viewing experience, including acclaimed series, fan-favorite franchises, standout performances from celebrated talent, and exceptional storytelling across mystery, crime, drama, and comedy,' Robert Schildhouse, President, BritBox, said in a that you only have a few short weeks to enjoy your BritBox titles, here are three new-to-you series that you should add to your next HBO Max streaming session. One of the best British shows you can watch on the U.S., the Idris Elba-led British crime thriller 'Luther' will be available to stream on HBO Max, with season 1 on the platform from August 1 to 30, and season 2 available through the month of September. A Golden Globe-winning Idris Elba plays Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, a brilliant but tortured homicide detective (is there any other kind?) who has a knack for getting inside the minds of serial killers, including the psychopathic murderer Alice Morgan (played by Ruth Wilson), who becomes both his nemesis and unlikely companion. It is unconventional professional methods like that, as well as his own lingering personal demons, that put Luther at odds with his team. Watch 'Luther' on HBO Max now Long before there was Michael Scott (Steve Carell), Dunder Mifflin's 'World's Best Boss' and protagonist of the U.S. version of 'The Office,' there was David Brent (Ricky Gervais, who also created the comedy alongside Stephen Merchant), the hilariously insufferable manager of the Wernham Hogg paper company. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Like its American remake, the British original follows the relatable, mundane but downright hysterical day-to-day lives of office employees, with a cast that includes Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook and Lucy Davis. The first two seasons of the genre-defining mockumentary, as well as the Christmas special, are available to watch on HBO Max as part of the summertime programming pop-up. Watch 'The Office' on HBO Max now Seasons 1 and 2 of 'cozy crime' favorite 'Father Brown' will be available to HBO Max subscribers throughout August and September. Based on the character created by English author G.K. Chesterton (featured in 53 short stories published between 1910 and 1936), the period-piece series centers on the titular Roman Catholic priest slash amateur detective who uses his keen powers of observation and his sacred intuition to solve mysteries and crimes in 1950s-era England. Along with Mark Williams as the crime-busting clergyman Father Brown, the cast features Sorcha Cusack, Nancy Carroll, Alex Price, John Burton, Jackie Deam and more. Days of Our Lives Recap: Johnny's Trial Begins

Days of Our Lives Recap: Johnny's Trial Begins originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Days of Our Lives recap: Brady Pub: Kate walks in to find Roman in a suit, just before he testifies against Johnny… She grabs an apron and takes over for him while he's going to be gone. Roman doesn't want Kate to bus tables but she's good with filling in at the family business. With that, they kiss. Philip walks in and says he missed her at the office. They talk about how weird it is for son to be the boss of his mother. Philip says he read a bit of One Stormy Night and thinks it's a best seller in the making. They discuss the pseudonym and Kate says she can't tell anyone who he, she or they is. Philip says he's the boss so she has to tell him. Kate refuses to name the author of the book and says her son will simply have to deal with it. Philip says he may have recognized some of the passages in the book, which throws Kate for a loop. He simply says Anastasia Sands is Stephanie Johnson. Kate shushes him as she and Alex are trying to keep everything a secret. Kate says there might be some recognizable passages but Stephanie has changed names to protect the guilty. Kate says she understands Stephanie's difficulties as she once wrote a book of her own about her love affair with Bill Horton, Lucas' father. Philip had no clue and asks for more details. She says Jack found it and tried to publish it. The details came out once again during Curtis' murder trial. Philip feels so badly for his mother and rightfully finds himself so very privileged. Kate says it's all good and simply wants her son to focus on moving forward with his life. Stephanie's Pad: Stephanie calls EJ to leave him a message. Jada is about to leave and is unsettled to learn her roommate is working for EJ. She isn't certain about working for EJ but needs clients. She took the job to be a buffer between him and her mother. Jada doesn't want to be judgmental but Stephanie gets it. Jada notices the package that was sent to Stephanie, and she says she has a pretty good idea who sent it and wants to forget they ever existed. Jada thinks she should simply open it but Stephanie is unwilling and throws it in the ill-fitting trash can. Horton Square: EJ is rushing through when he runs into Chad. He is annoyed to be testifying against his nephew. EJ is cool but wants a favor. Chad says he will not cover the trial to favor Johnny. Court Room: Outside, Johnny runs into Belle. She tries to be nice, and Johnny says he knows she's just doing her job. Next, EJ rushes by and Belle clearly feels all alone. Johnny tells EJ about Susan's arrival. They argue a bit about Chanel being the shooter. Everyone takes their seats at their respective tables before the judge walks in and the opening statements proceed. Belle begins saying they are here to find justice and is here to prove Johnny shot EJ and that it was premeditated. She brings up the victim is defending the defendant and how unorthodox it all is. Belle says EJ would do anything to protect his family's name. She vows to prove Johnny's guilt in the act of shooting his father. With that, Belle takes a seat and EJ rises. EJ says he is the best man to defend his son because he loves him and knows he is innocent. EJ admits he can't remember all the details but says Belle has no significant evidence, which helps define reasonable doubt. EJ says there are oh so many folks who wanted him dead and possibly pulled the trigger. He says his son is innocent and begs them to not punish him for the sins of his father. Chad takes the stand and testifies about finding his brother bloody and dying on the floor of the living room. Belle asks about the strained relationship between Johnny and his father. Chad admits he spoke to Johnny about the shooting, and he said he didn't care whether his father lived or died. EJ crosses and asks if Chad remembers anything about the state of the house. He says he notices the french doors to the living room were open to the outside but there was no sign of the shooter. EJ asks directly about Johnny and says he only saw EJ in the house. Jada takes the stand and testifies the gun belonging to Roman was the one which shot EJ. She says Roman turned it in himself. EJ crosses Jada and establishes the gun was never found on Johnny's person. He asks Jada if she had motive to want him dead and the judge allows the question. He brings up all the reasons for which a motive for her to kill him may have existed. Jada sets her jaw and admits she did have motive. Before she can explain, EJ shuts her down. Roman takes the stand and Belle asks him about his gun. She asks him how he knew his gun was missing. Roman admits mentioning the gun behind the bar to Johnny. Belle wonders if Roman thought Johnny took the gun and asks if he had a reason to believe he was angry with his father. Roman admits Johnny had many reasons to have beef with his daddy. She follows up asking Roman if he ever heard Johnny wanting to hurt his father. Roman admits he did and tells the story of Johnny saying he wanted to take a knife and stab him. Belle finishes by asking whether or not Roman tried to chase down Johnny after he discovered the gun was gone. Roman admits he went to the DiMera mansion and found the gun in the planter outside before he went in. Roman heard the sirens and decided to grab the gun and flee the scene. He admits he brought the gun back to the pub and returned it to the lockbox. Belle asks about the missing bullet and Roman admits he wiped the gun down. When asked why, Roman admits he thought his grandson may have been responsible for EJ's shooting. With that, Belle turns Roman over to EJ. Horton Square: Chad runs into Stephanie and tells her about testifying at Johnny's trial. Despite the awkwardness, he knows his brother will do whatever it takes to save his son. They chat a bit about her new job and worries Stephanie tying herself to EJ will end badly. Days of Our Lives Recap: Marlena and Julie Bond Over Their Grief Endings Stephanie promises Chad that working around EJ won't make her compromise her values. He asks about Alex and says when you're happy things from the past aren't always that important. Stephanie doesn't seem so sure. Kate is happy to be working at Titan/DiMera just in case Xander gets out of hand again. She looks around and realizes she needs to cover some customers and heads off. Stephanie returns home and tells Jada she's ready to open the package. With that, she opens it and finds a tote bag. She realizes she ordered it for herself and now feels silly (really?). Jada wonders what Stephanie was actually worried about and she admits some of the things she wrote in her novel were about this certain guy (who?). EJ asks Roman if he saw Johnny take the gun. Roman says no. EJ establishes Roman may have wished him dead before and then goes back to discussing what he did with the gun. EJ leans in and says Roman could very well have been the one to shoot him. Keep checking back for the latest Days of Our Lives recaps! Kendrick Lamar Beats His Own Radio Record With Another Week At No. 1

Kendrick Lamar's 'Luther' becomes his longest-running No. 1 on the Rap Airplay chart, outlasting ... More 'Not Like Us' with 18 weeks at the top. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 08: Kendrick Lamar performs onstage during the Visa Cash App RB Formula One Team 2024 Livery Reveal on February 08, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo byfor Cash App) In many ways, 'Not Like Us' will likely be remembered as Kendrick Lamar's career high point. The tune propelled the rapper into the stratosphere, which is saying a lot, considering that by the time the Drake diss track was released, he was already one of the most respected names in hip-hop, as well as one of the most awarded and commercially successful. 'Not Like Us,' which won both Record and Song of the Year at the Grammys, quickly emerged as one of the biggest hits of 2024 and certainly one of Lamar's most memorable. After that cut reset a number of historic records, one of the superstar's follow-up singles has somehow become even bigger, something that seemed unlikely during the heyday of 'Not Like Us.' 'Luther' Is Steady at No. 1 'Luther' continues to rule the Rap Airplay chart, keeping Cardi B's 'Outside' from claiming another No. 1. That tune swaps spots with Lamar's 'Peekaboo' featuring AZChike, which dips to fourth place. 'Luther,' which also credits Lamar's friend SZA, becomes as the rapper's most successful No. 1 ever on the Rap Airplay ranking as it leads once more. 'Luther' Rules for a Milestone 18 Weeks As of this frame, 'Luther' has led the Rap Airplay chart for 18 weeks. Previously, the tune was matched with 'Not Like Us,' which managed 17 frames at the summit, starting in June 2024. Now, his collaboration has become the longest-running champion in his discography on the most important rap radio list published by Billboard. Kendrick Lamar Dominates the Top 10 Amazingly, as 'Luther' runs the show, Lamar occupies multiple spaces near the top of the Rap Airplay chart this frame. He appears inside the top 10 with 'Luther,' 'Peekaboo,' and 'TV Off,' a collaboration with Lefty, Gunplay. 'Squabble Up,' another track from his recent album GNX, drops just outside the region, slipping from No. 6 to No. 11, as last week he owned 40% of the entire top 10. 'Luther' Rules More Than One Tally 'Luther' reigns beyond the Rap Airplay ranking this frame. The track also returns to the top spot on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. Recently, Drake's new single 'What Did I Miss?' opened in first place, but it has already started to slip.
