Here we go again! Controversial paper questions whether interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS is 'possibly hostile' alien tech in disguise
The newly discovered interstellar object 3I/ATLAS could be a piece of "possibly hostile" extraterrestrial technology in disguise, according to controversial research from a small group of scientists, including a renowned alien-hunting astronomer.
Their paper, which has not been peer-reviewed, echoes similar claims previously made about 'Oumuamua, the first-ever cosmic interloper that was discovered in 2017.
But experts have told Live Science that the new claims are "nonsense" and "insulting," and insist that the available evidence points toward the object being completely natural.
3I/ATLAS was discovered on July 1 barreling toward the sun at more than 130,000 mph (210,000 km/h), and was confirmed to be an interstellar object less than 24 hours later. Initial observations strongly suggest it is a large comet surrounded by a cloud of ice, gas and dust called a coma, stretching up to 15 miles (24 kilometers) across. A computer model simulating where it originated from hinted that it could be up to 3 billion years older than our solar system, potentially making it the oldest comet ever seen.
But in a new paper, uploaded July 16 to the preprint server arXiv, a trio of researchers have questioned whether the comet is actually some form of covert alien tech sent here by an advanced, potentially aggressive extraterrestrial civilization.
The researchers described the new paper as a "pedagogical exercise," or thought experiment, and offer no clear evidence of alien involvement. Instead, they point at the comet's "anomalous characteristics" and provide alternative theories to explain them.
The study's most notable author is Avi Loeb, an astronomer at Harvard University who is renowned for linking extraterrestrial objects to intelligent aliens. He is the head of the Galileo Project, which is attempting to detect evidence of technosignatures and UFOs. In 2023, he led a controversial expedition that claimed to have collected pieces of possible alien tech left behind by an unconfirmed interstellar meteorite in the Pacific Ocean. (These claims have since been largely debunked by outside researchers).
Loeb was also the primary researcher who claimed that the unusual shape and non-gravitational acceleration of the interstellar object 'Oumuamua were signs that it was an alien probe.
Today, the general consensus is that 'Oumuamua was an asteroid that was leaking gas into space, similar to a comet. However, Loeb and his colleagues have continued to advocate its potential alien origin and have proposed missions to track down the wandering space rock.
Loeb's co-authors for the new study are both associated with the Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is), a U.K. institute dedicated to planning future missions to alien star systems.
In a blog post explaining the new paper, Loeb wrote that if 3I/ATLAS is a "technological artifact" it could be evidence of the dark forest hypothesis, which argues that the reason we have not found evidence of extraterrestrial life is that they are staying silent to remain invisible to potential predators or prey.
"The consequences, should the hypothesis turn out to be correct, could potentially be dire for humanity, and would possibly require defensive measures to be undertaken," he wrote.
Alien 'evidence'
Most of the points laid out in the new paper relate to the unusual trajectory of 3I/ATLAS. The object is moving significantly faster than the only other known interstellar objects — 'Oumuamua and Comet Borisov, which was spotted in 2019 — and has entered the solar system at a different angle from its predecessors, approaching the sun side-on relative to our star's orbit through the Milky Way.
Loeb wrote that the object's trajectory "offers various benefits to an extraterrestrial intelligence" that may be using it to subtly spy on Earth. One such benefit is that 3I/ATLAS will make relatively close approaches to three planets: Jupiter, Mars and Venus. And the minimum distances between the object and these worlds could enable aliens to discretely deploy "gadgets" there, Loeb wrote.
3I/ATLAS will also be hidden on the opposite side of the sun to Earth when it reaches its closest point to our home star in late October. "This could be intentional to avoid detailed observations from Earth-based telescopes when the object is brightest or when gadgets are sent to Earth from that hidden vantage point," Loeb wrote.
The unusually high speed of 3I/ATLAS also makes it very hard to launch a spacecraft to intercept it before it exits the solar system, which could be another potential sign of clandestine alien activity, the researchers argued.
Based on its current speed, Loeb also noted that 3I/ATLAS would have entered the outer boundaries of the solar system around 8,000 years ago, which is "roughly when human-made technologies became advanced enough to start documenting history on Earth." Although, it is unclear what he is trying to imply by saying this.
The researchers also argued that there is insufficient evidence to show conclusively that 3I/ATLAS is a comet, especially as researchers are yet to identify any "volatiles," or specific chemicals associated with comets, within its coma.
Controversial claims
Since 3I/ATLAS was discovered, researchers have been trying to identify it, and so far, the overwhelming consensus is that it is a comet.
"There have been numerous telescopic observations of 3I/ATLAS demonstrating that it's displaying classical signatures of cometary activity," Darryl Seligman, an astronomer at Michigan State University who led the first study quantifying 3I/ATLAS, told Live Science in an email.
"All evidence points to this being an ordinary comet that was ejected from another solar system, just as countless billions of comets have been ejected from our own solar system," added Samantha Lawler, an astronomer at the University of Regina in Canada who specializes in solar system dynamics.
Any assumptions about the object's lack of volatiles is also premature at this time. "The object is still pretty far away from the sun, so no, we wouldn't typically expect to find direct evidence of volatiles necessarily," Seligman said. Instead, these compounds will likely become apparent in the coming weeks and months, he added.
Loeb admits that the alien technology scenario is a long shot: "By far, the most likely outcome will be that 3I/ATLAS is a completely natural interstellar object, probably a comet," he wrote in the blog post.
Given the available evidence, many of the researchers who spoke to Live Science are disappointed with the new paper and pointed out that it distracts from the work of other scientists.
"Astronomers all around the world have been thrilled at the arrival of 3I/ATLAS, collaborating to use advanced telescopes to learn about this visitor," Chris Lintott, an astronomer at the University of Oxford who was part of the team that simulated 3I/ATLAS's galactic origins, told Live Science in an email. "Any suggestion that it's artificial is nonsense on stilts, and is an insult to the exciting work going on to understand this object."

Loeb is no stranger to this type of criticism and has defended his position, writing that "the hypothesis is an interesting exercise in its own right, and is fun to explore, irrespective of its likely validity."
However, while it is important to remain open-minded about any "testable prediction," the new paper pushes this sentiment to the limit, Lawler told Live Science in an email. "In my experience, the vast majority of scientists subscribe to the idea that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and the evidence presented is absolutely not extraordinary."

A ‘Flesh-Eating' Germ Is on the Rise This Summer
A bacterial infection that can cause 'flesh-eating' disease is becoming a bigger problem in the U.S.—and climate change is at least partly to blame. Several states along the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard have already reported a higher than usual tally of Vibrio vulnificus cases and deaths this summer. Last week, for instance, the Louisiana Department of Health issued a warning to residents over increased reports of V. vulnificus. Experts argue that milder winters and hotter summers are allowing these bacteria to thrive more easily than before in warmer waters. 'Every water sample we collect along the coast now contains some kind of Vibrio. That wasn't true two decades ago,' Rachel Noble, a microbiologist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's Institute of Marine Sciences, told local outlet WRAL Monday. North Carolina has seen 59 reported cases of V. vulnificus and one death as of July 31, according to health department data cited by WRAL—the second highest midsummer toll seen in 5 years. 'Flesh-Eating' Bacteria Surge in Florida Floodwaters After Back-to-Back Hurricanes V. vulnificus is a relative of the bacteria that cause cholera in people. It's found in warm seawater or brackish water and usually enters the body through open cuts or by consuming raw shellfish. Wound infections can trigger a life-threatening condition called necrotizing fasciitis, which quickly kills off skin and tissue surrounding the wound (though this decay resembles eaten flesh, the bacteria themselves aren't feeding off our skin). Only around 150 to 200 cases of V. vulnificus are reported annually to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but it can kill one of every five people who catch it, sometimes within days. And there's growing evidence its presence in the U.S. is growing and expanding in range over time. A 2023 study found that reported cases in the eastern United States increased eightfold from 1988 to 2018, for example. Extreme weather events like heat waves and hurricanes can also drive spikes of the infection. Florida experienced a record high of 82 cases last year, with many arriving in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Florida has only seen 13 V. vulnificus cases and four deaths so far in 2025, not far from its usual trends. Other areas have seen an uptick, however. 17 cases have occurred in Louisiana so far, for instance, with all victims hospitalized and four dead as a result—well above the typical toll. Over the preceding decade, the state had seen an average of seven cases and one death a year from V. vulnificus. These 'flesh-eating' infections will remain a rare occurrence for the foreseeable future, but factors like climate change and extreme weather events have and will make them more common. So we should be more careful in the waters that carry these bacteria. Health organizations recommend that you avoid salt or brackish water if you're sporting an open cut, for example, or at least that you wear a waterproof bandage before getting into the water. You should also thoroughly wash any cuts exposed to these waters or raw seafood. And you should seek immediate medical care if you develop a worsening skin infection around your cuts after these exposures, since necrotizing fasciitis can rapidly progress and turn lethal if untreated.

The World's First Commercial Spaceplane Won't Be Launching Anytime Soon
The highly anticipated launch of the Dream Chaser spaceplane may be delayed yet again as Sierra Space continues to test its experimental vehicle. The inaugural Dream Chaser, named Tenacity, is slated for a launch date in 2025. However, recent comments by a NASA official revealed that there's a lot more work to be done before the spaceplane is ready to fly to the International Space Station and that it's highly unlikely to meet its deadline. 'We still have some of our integrated safety reviews to do, and we're in the process with updating both of our schedules to try to understand where does that really put us,' Dana Weigel, the program manager for the ISS, said during a recent media briefing, according to Aerospace America. 'Sierra's working on that, and so I need to wait and just get information back from them to see where they think some of that work lines out.' Dream Chaser has been years in the making. NASA awarded Sierra Space a Commercial Resupply Services 2 (CRS-2) contract in 2016 to provide at least seven cargo deliveries to the ISS. The Colorado-based company originally intended for Dream Chaser's inaugural flight to take place in 2020, but the spaceplane suffered several delays due to technical issues and certification hurdles. Although its 2025 launch date still appears on NASA's schedule, Weigel's recent comments don't sound too promising. Dream Chaser is designed to launch to low Earth orbit atop a rocket but survive atmospheric reentry and perform runway landings on the surface upon its return, similar to NASA's Space Shuttle. The futuristic-looking vehicle has foldable wings that fully unfurl once it's in flight, generating power through solar arrays. The spaceplane is also equipped with heat shield tiles to protect it from the high temperatures of atmospheric reentry. 'I think everyone really underestimates what it takes to put together a complex spacecraft. I mean, you're watching it right now with Boeing Starliner, you're watching it with Sierra, but if we remind ourselves on average it takes eight to 10 years for a spacecraft to get ready and fly,' Weigel told reporters during the briefing. Apart from SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, NASA hasn't had any luck in moving forward with an alternative means of transportation for its crew and cargo to the ISS. Following lessons learned from Boeing's Starliner fiasco, which left a crew stranded on the space station for nine months, NASA may be taking extra precaution before launching Tenacity to the ISS. One of the remaining tasks to be completed before its debut launch is a certification of Dream Chaser's software. Starliner experienced significant software issues during its first orbital test flight in December 2019, which pointed to problems with the spacecraft's software certification. Another hurdle that stands in Dream Chaser's way to space is its designated launch vehicle. For its debut flight, Tenacity will launch atop United Launch Alliance's Vulcan Centaur rocket. The 200-foot-tall (61-meter) rocket experienced a booster anomaly during its second flight in October 2024, which delayed its certification process for national security missions. Vulcan is still awaiting certification from the U.S. Space Force and has a backed-up schedule to attend to once it's ready to fly those missions. Dream Chaser is the next-generation reincarnation of Space Shuttle that spaceflight enthusiasts have been waiting for, but they may have to wait a little bit longer to see it fly.

Underwater grasses in Maryland's portion of the Chesapeake Bay declined slightly in 2024, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. Underwater grass abundance is a key indicator of water quality, the DNR said. The total area covered by submerged aquatic vegetation fell from 38,188 acres in 2023 to 36,794 acres in 2024. Maryland's 2025 restoration goal is 79,800 acres. An annual survey of submerged aquatic vegetation, (SAV), was conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science between May and October 2024. Despite the overall loss, freshwater SAV populations in Maryland performed well. All or part of five rivers surpassed their restoration goals, the DNR said. "The resilience we're seeing in freshwater SAV beds this year is encouraging and reflects years of targeted restoration, outreach, and monitoring," said Brooke Landry, the DNR's SAV program chief. "But sharp declines in widgeon grass across the mid-Bay are concerning, especially given how quickly this species can respond to changes in water quality." Also known as bay grasses, underwater grasses help create critical habitat for fish, blue crabs, and other aquatic life in the Chesapeake Bay. They absorb excess nutrients, stabilize sediments, and slow shoreline erosion. The DNR noted that bay grasses also help buffer the effects of climate change by removing carbon and reducing acidity in the water. Several Chesapeake Bay tributaries—including the Back River and Upper Chester River—saw strong growth in underwater grasses, according to the report. However, in the saltier mid-Bay region, significant declines were reported, especially in widgeon grass, a key species in that area. The latest SAV survey results come as Maryland continues efforts to improve the bay's health. In December 2024, nearly $400,000 in federal grant funding was awarded to five Maryland-based projects focused on environmental, cultural, and historical conservation within the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
