Vikings training camp notebook, day 4: Metellus extended, McCarthy shines
The Vikings roster has reported to Eden Prairie, and as a result, they have started their journey into the 2025 season. It starts at home in Minnesota, but they hope it ends on the road in Santa Clara, where they have a chance to raise the Lombardi Trophy for the first time.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O'Connell have new extensions, as do their assistants and coordinators. J.J. McCarthy is finally healthy and ready to take over the controls of a franchise that trusted him enough to stick with him when so many other options presented themselves. All in all, the coaching staff remains essentially unchanged, while the roster sees some position groups infused with youth and talent to solidify them.
The fourth day of training camp has wrapped, though, and it was action-packed. We saw a new extension for a fan favorite in Josh Metellus, and fans got to see firsthand how well J.J. McCarthy is developing.
J.J. McCarthy has the fanbase behind him
The fans got to have their eyes on the 2025 version of the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday, and as a result, they got to see their favorite team look impressive up close and personal. In the process, they got to do the Skol Chant with Hall of Famer Cris Carter, they saw the defense look impressive, but most importantly, they saw J.J. McCarthy.
After months away from the spotlight, at least on the field, McCarthy returned with a vengeance. He unleashed velocity, quick decisions, tight window throws, you name it. What stole the show, though, was another deep ball touchdown to Jordan Addison downfield. It seems those two have a strong connection early in camp, with Justin Jefferson's absence that is likely to keep growing.
Brian Flores is in his bag early in camp
The questions around the defense have focused on the secondary and the usage of sophomore pass rusher, Dallas Turner. On Saturday, the Vikings extended their Swiss Army knife defender, Josh Metellus, and Dallas Turner was reported to be used on the field in a variety of ways as well.
The biggest news, as it relates to Turner, is that he was on the field while Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel were also present. Opposing offenses struggled to get consistent blocking done while handling Van Ginkel and Greenard; throwing Dallas Turner into the mix makes things almost impossible. Expect to see more consistent usage of the former Crimson Tide defender as camp progresses.
T.J. Hockenson is looking healthy
Last year, the Vikings' star tight end T.J. Hockenson was coming off a torn ACL at the hands of Lions safety Kerby Joseph. Coming back from a knee injury in the middle of the season is never easy, and we saw Hockenson struggle to find the momentum and success he was accustomed to.
Fast forward to Vikings training camp on Saturday, reports indicate that Hockenson is back to his old self. On Saturday, he was hit down the field by J.J. McCarthy, and it got a big pop out of fans. While no one wants to see Justin Jefferson miss time, it will help him build his connection with those around the offense.

Eagles Super Bowl champion admits to some Tom Brady apprehension
Chris Long played with and against Tom Brady. Recently, he shared a story about the latter. Classic games often share similar ingredients. Huge stakes are helpful, but they aren't necessary. The bigger the stakes, the bigger the moment, though. The Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots once engaged in one of the best Super Bowls ever played. Ask Birds fans, and they may place it among their top two. It helps that the right team came out on top. An exciting and stressful affair offered a night we'll never forget. Super Bowl 52 certainly meets the criteria of a classic. Every masterpiece needs unforgettable scoring plays, a few twists, and great performances by its stars. On February 4, 2018, an underdog Eagles team hoped to topple perhaps the greatest quarterback, coach, and dynasty in NFL history. Chris Long makes his confession about his feelings on the Tom Brady mystique. One day, we'll all be old men and women. We'll tell the grandchildren about the 2017-18 Philadelphia Eagles. If you weren't paying attention then and think this current iteration is stacked with characters, you should do some research on that roster. Philadelphia, the NFC's top-seeded team during the postseason, was often treated as an underdog. They bought dog masks. Fans followed suit, and before you know it, the world's supply had evaporated. They had become impossible to find. One of the leaders of the charge was a former Patriot who had joined the Eagles. Long was recently a guest on the "Green Legion" Radio. Naturally, he was asked about winning a Super Bowl in Philadelphia and his affiliation with both organizations. As always, Long on the microphone provided magic. Before the Eagles took the field to play the Minnesota Vikings for the right to play in Super Bowl LII, he watched as much as he could of the New England Patriots vs. Jacksonville Jaguars clash in the AFC Championship Game. Long admits pulling for the Jags on that Sunday afternoon. He had seen the brilliance of Tom Brady firsthand, and he wanted no part of it two weeks later. He believed facing Jacksonville would provide a smoother ride to the Eagles' first Lombardi Trophy. We all know how that turned out. Ultimately, Long didn't get his wish, but the Birds got the job done. Honestly, that makes for a better story. Had Philadelphia played the Jags and won on football's biggest stage, Birds fans would have appreciated the win, but beating Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the Patriots dynasty means a little more, right? Think about it. To win the franchise's first championship since the NFL/AFL merger, they conquered the QB and coach often viewed as the best pro football had ever seen. To many, their Patriots dynasty is without equal, but on one night in 2018, they met their match. No, scratch that. They found a superior opponent. Long, now with the Birds, would hoist another Lombardi Trophy as green, white, and silver confetti fell. Were those of us who were watching a little apprehensive and afraid? You're doggone right! That's Tom Brady, man! Have you seen all of those clutch moments and all of that elite play? But a classic unfolded, one marked by a heroic performance from Nick Foles.

Arizona Cardinals free agent OL Will Hernandez fully cleared after ACL surgery
Hernandez tore his ACL in Week 5. He is now healthy and ready to sign somewhere and begin playing. The Arizona Cardinals seem to have a spot on their roster still available for offensive lineman Will Hernandez, who after three years as their starting right is an unsigned free agent. If they have been waiting for him to be healthy, that time has arrived. Hernandez, who suffered a torn ACL last ywear in Week 5, announced via his Instagram account that he has been fullu medically cleared for football. Football got taken away from me 9 months ago, it was the hardest thing that's ever happened to me . This has been my entire life. Many said that was it for me. I've always been that player to talk up a big game and motivate the guys around me but for once it was my turn to practice what I preached! IM HUNGRY being away from the game so long made me fall in love with it again ! But this time I'm not just coming back for my self but for all my people 🇲🇽 ima lead by example and show yall que SI SE PUEDE! Especially for all the LIL MIJOS that have dreams too watching me .Whatever yall going through rn use me as proof that with hard work you can make anything happen ! The Cardinals have had second-year guard Isaiah Adams playing right guard with the starting offense this offseason, but the possibility of Hernandez' return has not been ruled out. After all, the Cardinals did not reassign No. 76, the number he wore for three seasons. And that is somewhat significant because rookie offensive lineman Hayden Conner, their sixth-round pick this year, wore No. 76 all through college at Texas. A year ago, after they released tackle D.J. Humphries, his No. 74 was given to Adams. Now healthy, Hernandez will have suitors. The Cardinals seem happy with Adams, but Hernandez had been their best lineman over the three seasons here. This will be something to watch, either for the Cardinals or for Hernandez landing with another team. Minnesota Vikings training camp notebook, day 6: Defense has a strong showing
The Minnesota Vikings were in pads for the first time on Monday. That means we're one step closer to football, with players in the trenches able to get physical and give us a better glimpse of what they're capable of moving forward. One promising young player had a great practice in pads. A free agent addition made his first appearance in team drills. And we saw another highlight touchdown pass from J.J. McCarthy. Let's go over some of the highlights of Day 6 of Vikings practice. But overall, the Vikings' defense bounced back after the offense had the upper hand on Saturday. That is bound to happen in the third year under Brian Flores with an even more formidable defensive front than last year. J.J. McCarthy continues to impress McCarthy had another highlight touchdown pass on Monday. After feeling some pressure in the pocket, McCarthy fired down the left sideline towards wide receiver Lucky Jackson. It appeared that safety Theo Jackson could intercept the pass, but the ball arrived a split second before he could get a hand on it. The pass once again displayed McCarthy's arm strength and willingness to be aggressive. A worse pass (or faster safety) could have led to an interception. Will Fries makes his debut in team drills One of the Vikings' biggest free agent additions of the offseason made his first appearance in team drills. Right guard Will Fries, who suffered a broken tibia in 2024, was cleared to practice when camp began last Thursday, but he was limited to individual work. On Monday, he was inserted into the starting lineup in 11-on-11 drills. Dallas Turner makes an impact Dallas Turner was limited to 310 defensive snaps in 2024. But he showed why the Vikings traded up to select him in the NFL draft. Several Vikings media members talked about Turner's impact on Monday, with one highlight making the rounds on X/Twitter when he got to backup quarterback Sam Howell before he could complete a pass downfield. Turner continues to draw praise as he looks to impact the defense more consistently in 2025. Metellus returns, Jefferson out Josh Metellus returned to practice after missing Friday and Saturday practices with an ankle injury. It was the safety's first practice back since signing his three-year, $36 million deal on Saturday. Justin Jefferson, who suffered a mild hamstring strain last week, was still out. Overall, it seemed as though the defense got the better end of the deal on Monday. The Vikings' social media team even singled out a pass breakup by cornerback Dwight McGlothern that was intercepted by safety Jay Ward. We'll see if the Vikings' offense can bounce back on Tuesday, but they will likely have many more tough practices if the defense is as strong as the coaching staff and front office envision it to be.
