A&T is working in collaboration with British Cycling to deliver the Girls Summer Cycling Campaign.
The club's qualified coaches are running free sessions for six weeks, every Tuesday from 4.30-5.30 pm, until September 2, at the cycle speedway track at the Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Club, at Gin Pit Village.
Bikes and helmets are available for riders to use, free of charge.
The club already boasts a cycle speedway superstar in 21-year-old Emily Burgess, the current European Women's silver medalist, three times British Women's champion and GB and England Women's international.

Tower Bridge and Cutty Sark on Big Half finisher medal designed with refugees

Finishers in next month's The Big Half in central London will be receive a medal and T-shirt featuring Tower Bridge and Cutty Sark which was designed with the help of refugee runners. The Coopah Refugee Run Club partners with charities to help migrants settle into life in the UK through local run clubs, personalised coaching, community support, and life-long access to the Coopah training app. Some of its members have helped to create the medal and long-sleeved T-shirt designs which include interlocking rings to represent the diverse journeys that will unite at the Big Half on Sunday September 7. The 13.1 mile route starts close to Tower Bridge and finishes beside the Cutty Sark in Greenwich. The confetti, sprinkled on the medal, is said to be a celebration of the event and of the movement experienced. Rawand Gurun, 28, who works for the NHS after studying nursing, moved to the UK from Kurdistan during the Covid-19 pandemic. He was volunteering for a homeless charity when he met Coopah co-founder, Dan Strang, who introduced him to the Refugee Run Club. Initially unable to run 5km in one go, Mr Gurun became a regular at the Brueton Park parkrun in Solihull, West Midlands, and completed the 2024 TCS London Marathon. 'I love the running culture in the UK,' he said. 'People you run with become close friends and you're all supporting each other. 'Running is free and available whenever you want. It's not about being the best. It's just about gradually increasing your mileage and improving your lifestyle.' Mr Gurun added: 'Taking part in events is not just about getting a medal – it's the feeling of people cheering you on, so we wanted to show how you feel that support and how joyful it makes you. 'We also wanted to include some London landmarks like the Cutty Sark. It feels big when you run past certain places and it affects you emotionally.' Paul Mwila, 41, who came to the UK from Zambia in 2022, is awaiting a final decision on his residency from the Home Office. 'Coopah's run club has kept me afloat during really difficult times. So many of the experiences I've had are thanks to them,' he said. 'I've met so many people, been to new places, and found a community.' Mr Mwila, who lives at a hotel assigned by the Home Office, ran through the streets of Crystal Palace at 4am when he first came to London so that nobody would see him. In 2023, he met Coopah's Andrew Laidlaw in a hotel lobby and, soon afterwards, Mr Mwila joined his first group run at Crystal Palace parkrun. He ran his first marathon, the 2025 TCS London Marathon in April. 'Running will be part of my life for as long as my legs let me – hopefully a long, long time,' he said. He was delighted to be part of the design team, adding: 'We wanted to show how the landmarks connect to our lives, and that no matter what you're going through, difficult times always come to an end.' More than 280 local community groups based in the four host boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Southwark and Greenwich, will take part in The Big Half which offers discounted entry fees of £25 (compared to the standard £56) to encourage wider access to running. More than 25,000 participants are registered to take part in the Big Half festival of running on September 7, which also includes the Big Mile, a family-friendly one-mile event, and the New Balance Big Relay, in which teams of four complete 3.1 miles each of the half-marathon route. Entries for 2025 are sold out. Among those taking part are 40 women from Sole Striders, a female-only community and run club which was founded in 2024. Sanaa Qureshi, senior community engagement manager at London Marathon Events which organises the Big Half, said: 'Community and inclusivity is at the heart of the Big Half. 'We are proud to work with groups like Coopah's Refugee Run Club and Sole Striders – particularly given their work with migrant and refugee communities and women across London, groups we know are often marginalised when it comes to access to sport and physical activity.'

Aberdeen, Celtic & Thistle disciplined over pyros

Aberdeen, Celtic and Partick Thistle have been disciplined by the Scottish Professional Football League for their fans' pyrotechnic displays at the end of last season. The two Premiership clubs will have to reduce the number of fans by 200 if there is a repeat of the "unacceptable conduct", while Championship outfit Thistle would face the closure of a stand after their display was also followed by a pitch invasion. It follows an investigation by the league into "large-scale, organised and illegal pyrotechnic displays" at the games between Aberdeen and Celtic, Celtic and St Mirren, plus Ayr United v Partick Thistle. 'Rangers in talks with Betis' Mendy' - gossip Who has your Premiership club brought in & let go? - summer 2025 "All three clubs have been found to have breached SPFL rules in failing to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, that their supporters did not engage in "unacceptable conduct" at those matches," the league said in a statement. "The clubs were also found to have failed to identify or take proportionate disciplinary measures against the supporters responsible for the pyrotechnic displays and, in Partick Thistle's case, also against those who carried out the pitch invasion." The invasion led to a two-minute delay in the Premiership play-off quarter-final second leg at Somerset Park on 9 May, while a similar delay was caused by Thistle fans using pyrotechnics and throwing them on to the pitch. The pyrotechnics display by Aberdeen fans during their 14 May match against Celtic led to Sky Sports "having to issue an apology for interruptions to the broadcast following the display, which caused significant smoke clouds to form within the stadium". Celtic supporters carried out pyrotechnic displays in the north-east corner of Celtic Park during and prior to the final league game of the season at home to St Mirren on 17 May. "These incidents caused a health and safety risk to fellow supporters, players and those working at matches; as well as a significant inconvenience to thousands of supporters at the matches and fans watching these games at home," the SPFL added.

James Maddison set to undergo surgery after rupturing ACL

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in pre-season and will undergo surgery, the club has confirmed. Maddison, a 75th-minute substitute, only played for nine minutes in Spurs' pre-season game against Newcastle in Seoul before he was seen in visible discomfort. The 28-year-old was surrounded by teammates and looked upset, with medical staff taking him off the pitch on a stretcher. New manager Thomas Frank said after the game that the injury was 'brutal' and its severity has now been confirmed.. On Thursday, Spurs released a statement saying: 'We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. 'His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team. 'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.' Maddison joined Tottenham from Leicester in 2023 and scored 12 goals last season. He also missed the end of last season with a knee injury, including the Europa League final victory over Manchester United, and Frank confirmed after the Newcastle friendly that he has injured the same knee. The long and gruelling rehabilitation process for an ACL injury means that the England international is likely to miss the majority of the season. His absence leaves Frank with a severely depleted front line. Former captain Son Heung-Min has joined MLS team Los Angeles FC for a league-record fee, while attacking midfielder Dejan Kulusevski is out for the foreseeable future as he continues his recovery from knee surgery in May. Tottenham attempted to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest but were threatened with legal action before the 25-year-old opted to renew his contract.
