"Gatekeeping at its finest": Fans divided as 'Gallagher Hill' fenced off ahead of next Oasis Heaton Park show
A section of Heaton Park where ticketless fans were able to catch a glimpse of Oasis' historic return to Manchester has been fenced off by organisers. Dubbed 'Gallagher Hill', videos on social media showed fans having picnics and enjoying a drink as the boys belted out some of their iconic tunes to a crowd of 80,000. While a majority of fans who perched themselves in the spot were well behaved and in good spirits, some did try to break into the concert area. Video captured the moment scores of ticketless fans stormed metal fences as the band took to the stage. It is understood the tall fences and a heavy security presence deterred those trying to chance their way inside. Oasis are set to play tomorrow night (Wednesday, July 16), as well as shows on Saturday and Sunday (July 19 & 20), with the viewpoint going viral after images and video were circulated online and a tag for 'Gallagher Hill' was added to Google Maps. Images show a large stretch of the area has now been fenced off and a new barrier put up, completely blocking the view. A sign also warns about livestock in the fields. The Manchester Evening News has approached Manchester City Council to ask about the barriers and fences now in place at Gallagher Hill. Many have taken to social media to voice their discontent at missing out on what is seen as a once in a lifetime experience. On Facebook, one MEN reader said: "I mean, what was the harm of folk standing outside listening? They weren't causing any harm or owt!" Another added: "People will still jump it, it will be like derby day on Saturday". While one reader put it simply, stating: "Gatekeeping at its finest." Choosing not to be deterred by the barriers, a local who lives in the area said: "I live five mins from the park, I know that park like the back of my hand I was on the hill Saturday and I will be back Saturday in a different location." While another determined fan said: "Nothing a pair of ladders can't fix." While another reader was all for the barrier, pointing to how much fans paid to attend the gigs: "My daughter managed to pay over 100 quid for her ticket through her part time job. Yeah I'm all for a freebie and being cheeky, but it's not fair on those that did manage to get a ticket! "Not only that, more seriously it's putting additional pressure on security and the emergency services if there are crowds all over the shop! I imagine it's actually more for security reasons than anything else otherwise they would have done it sooner."

Stand by for town's first carnival for 33 years
People in the Tyldesley will be hoping the glorious summer weather continues for the town's first carnival for 33 years on Sunday. The event, which takes place at Tyldesley Rugby Union Club from 11 am to 5 pm, will include food and drink offers, a beer tent, live music, face painting, a fun fair, and stalls. A parade will leave the club to march around the town at noon. Local Independent councillor James Fish has hailed the return of the event. 'It should be a fantastic event for the people of Tyldesley,' he said. Adrian White, a member of the Tyldesley Matters Facebook group, said: 'Being born and brought up in Tyldesley, I have, like many others, many fantastic memories of this wonderful event that brought so many people together. 'The sight of floats travelling along Manchester Road, the smiling faces of people involved and family members lining the streets and the sound of the band in the distance, heard long before we could catch a glimpse of the band members are stored in my memory bank. 'The town centre came alive every year on carnival day and this year's return will mean so much to local folk who remember the glorious celebrations from yesteryear.' Local organisations participating in the event include Tyldesley Swimming and Water Polo Club, 180 Dance and Fitness Centre, Makants Greyhound Rescue NW, Northwest Funfairs and Astley and Tyldesley FC.

ITV commentary legend slams Rio Ferdinand over 'MUTV' punditry during Man Utd matches
Rio Ferdinand's reaction to Manchester United's comeback against Lyon has come under scrutiny from commentary legend Clyde Tyldesley who was left unimpressed by the ex-defender Broadcasting legend Clyde Tyldesley has taken aim at Rio Ferdinand for his commentary during Manchester United's dramatic Europa League win over Lyon. The former ITV favourite was left unimpressed by the former defender's reaction as the Red Devils booked their spot in the semi-finals of the competition thanks to a late goal in extra-time. United looked set to crash out against Lyon but goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire saw Ruben Amorim's side win in dramatic fashion. It was Maguire's decisive header that sparked jubilant scenes at Old Trafford - and a wild reaction in the commentary booth. Ferdinand could be heard cheering for both Mainoo and Maguire's efforts and TNT Sports released a 'commentator cam' that showed him celebrating with his fellow pundit Robbie Savage - an ex Manchester United academy graduate - and Darren Fletcher. It was Fletcher who could be seen attempting to rein in his colleagues' excitement. Tyldesley took a dig at TNT Sports' coverage by accusing them of straying into the realms of United's own channel, MUTV. He did, however, have praise for Fletcher. Describing the final moments of United's win in his blog, Tyldesley wrote: "Over on TNT Sport, lead commentator Darren Fletcher was playing gooseberry to two former United players that were just loving the comeback. We know this because Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage could not only be heard but also seen on 'CommCam'. "So, just in case we were wondering if Rio's voice had temporarily lost the frequency of the commentator's traditional neutrality, we could watch his fist punching the air over and over in delight. I got the impression that he maybe knew the hidden camera was there. Could be wrong. "Fletch had been savvy enough to take a deep breath in the wake of United's equaliser – my wonderful mentor Reg Gutteridge used to call it "thinking time" – before delivering the catchy line 'Kobbie Mainoo is the coolest kid in Old Trafford and Manchester United are level'. Either side of him, Rio and Robbie were unashamedly losing their collective cool to welcome us to MUTV." Tyldesley went on to lament: "The day of the commentator fan – Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher et al – is here but does it work?" It's not the first time Ferdinand has prompted Tyldesley's ire either. The 70-year-old was critical of the TNT pundit's reaction to James Tarkowski's Everton equaliser against Liverpool. "Having the judgment and knowledge to read a game doesn't necessarily give an ex-player the ability to read it out loud to an audience of millions," Tyldesley said. "They are two separate professions with their own techniques and thought processes. "If you are coming from football into broadcasting, you need to be schooled and coached in the methods and disciplines of communication. Your words should count. 'Oh my God. Oh my God' is not quite enough."

Rio Ferdinand called out for his 'commentator fan' punditry by broadcasting legend in jibe at his work on Man United which is likened to 'MUTV'
Clive Tyldesley has taken aim at Rio Ferdinand for his co-commentary during Manchester United 's remarkable comeback win over Lyon in the Europa League last week. United looked destined to exit the competition at the quarter-final stage when they fell 6-4 behind on aggregate with just 10 minutes of extra time remaining. But they scored three late goals to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat and book their place in the semi-finals, with Ferdinand loving every second of it. Ferdinand was heard cheering as Kobbie Mainoo and then Harry Maguire scored in the final seconds of the match, and TNT Sports later released a 'commentator cam' that showed Ferdinand celebrating with fellow pundit Robbie Savage, with main commentator Darren Fletcher trying to calm the duo down. After watching the footage, Tyldesley has suggested Ferdinand knew the camera was there and was playing up for the audience, while he also accused the ex-United star of turning TNT's coverage into what you would expect from a club fan channel. Describing the final seconds of the chaotic game on his blog, Tyldesley wrote: 'Over on TNT Sport, lead commentator Darren Fletcher was playing gooseberry to two former United players that were just loving the comeback. We know this because Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage could not only be heard but also seen on "CommCam". Harry Maguire was United's hero, and Ferdinand was seen punching the air and cheering 'So, just in case we were wondering if Rio's voice had temporarily lost the frequency of the commentator's traditional neutrality, we could watch his fist punching the air over and over in delight. I got the impression that he maybe knew the hidden camera was there. Could be wrong. Either side of him, Rio and Robbie were unashamedly losing their collective cool to welcome us to MUTV.' Tyldesley went on to state that football has moved into the 'commentator fan' era, which sees the likes of Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher also commentating on their former clubs. But he appears unconvinced that this is actually what fans want. It is not the first time Tyldesley has called out Ferdinand for his commentating style either. Back in February, he was critical of Ferdinand after he covered the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park between Everton and Liverpool. The former United defender could hardly contain himself after James Tarkowski's last-minute equaliser as he repeatedly shouted 'oh my God' on commentary. Tyldesley compared Ferdinand to fictional comedy character Ali G, and also blasted his fellow commentator Ally McCoist. 'Having the judgment and knowledge to read a game doesn't necessarily give an ex-player the ability to read it out loud to an audience of millions,' Tyldesley wrote. 'They are two separate professions with their own techniques and thought processes. 'If you are coming from football into broadcasting, you need to be schooled and coached in the methods and disciplines of communication. Your words should count. '"Oh my God. Oh my God" is not quite enough.'
